"The story of the Green Patrol attack"

Meeting with Nuri al Okbi, Tel Aviv. October 19

The Bedouin rights activist Nuri al Okbi, who over the past three years maintains a sit-in strike in a tent on the lands from which his tribe was expelled in 1951, will reach Tel Aviv on November 19, in order to hold the second of his monthly meetings with Jewish Israelis and with the media. The meeting, with the participation also of Akil Tawil Abu Jarwal, Nuri's partner in the struggle, will take place on October 19 at 5.00 pm at Beit Hasofer, 6 Kaplan St., Tel Aviv.

“I would like to tell and describe to all who come to the meeting about what I experience there in the desert, far away from the public gaze" says al Okbi.

"Here is one example: on October 4, one day after the big rally of Jews and Bedouins, after the others dispersed there arrived at my tent in Al-Arakib some 20 people in six vehicles. The Green Patrol people, headed by Gad Biton who already led many earlier attacks on me, and there were also the black-uniformed troops of Matpa ("Coordination, Control and Enforcement Administration") with their guns and clubs. With no identification marks of any kind they surrounded me from all directions, cut down the ropes of my tent, it fell down and they took it with all my belongings. They had no court order, nor did they give any receipt for the property they confiscated. They had left me in the middle of the desert, without water!

Last Wednesday the Green Patrol people came again and assaulted me. I called the police. The police came – but arrested me, not them. For hours and hours I was kept detained in Be'er Sheba. I was told that the condition for my release was that I would sign an obligation not to disturb any more the work of the Jewish National Fund bulldozers, not stand in the bulldozers' way.

I told the police I would not agree to this condition – it is the JNF which is working illegally on land belonging to me and to my tribe, trying to create accomplished facts on land, ahead of the ruling of the court deliberating on the ownership. In the end the police set me free without my signing anything, and I went back to the land – immediately.

Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

College-bound high school students interested in pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies in the areas of music, dance, theater, visual arts, graphic design, and other related disciplines are encouraged to attend the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s (NACAC) Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair.

The Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Las Vegas Academy from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

At NACAC’s Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs, students, parents and art institutions take center stage. These fairs allow college-bound students interested in the arts to meet one-on-one with admission representatives from colleges, universities, conservatories, studios, festivals, and other educational institutions with specialized programs in the visual and performing arts.

Attendees learn about educational opportunities, admission and financial aid, portfolio days, audition and entrance requirements, student life, and much more.

While plenty of information is available for college-bound students with traditional interests, not as many resources exist for those who are more artistically-inclined. NACAC’s Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs fill a vital need for the growing number of students pursuing college degrees in music, theater, art, dance, visual arts, graphic design and writing. These fairs offer a unique opportunity to get the inside scoop on what it takes to obtain a degree in the arts.

Annually, more than 20,000 students attend NACAC’s Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs.
This fall, NACAC will sponsor Performing and Visual Arts Fairs in 17 locations throughout the country, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas and Seattle.

For more information, including a full schedule, of schools represented at each fair and fields of study for each school in attendance visit: www.nationalcollegefairs.org.

About NACAC: NACAC is an Arlington, VA-based education association of more than 11,000 primary and secondary school counselors, independent counselors, college admission and financial aid officers, enrollment managers, and organizations that work with students as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The association is committed to maintaining high standards that foster ethical and social responsibility among those involved in the transition process, as outlined in the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice.

Joe Niemczura // The Hospital at the End of the World

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

There are 2,600 hospitals in Asia, Africa and South America which could be classified as "Mission Hospitals" - far off the beaten path, providing basic medical service to the poorest people of the world. The Hospital at the End of the World tells the story of a nurse from the USA and his first experience as a teaching nurse in Nepal.

Joe Niemczura brings to life the day-to-day realities of life in a rural teaching hospital, literally at the "end of the road." The harsh realities of a lack of modern medical equipment when mixed with the humanness of endurances demonstrates that above all, it is the individual who matters; both patient and caregiver. All else pales in comparison. The strength of this story is in relationships with students, physicians, other nurses, patients, families and most importantly with Nepal itself. There is a sense of community connectedness which the author brings alive as the reader becomes one with the story. The heartbreak and grief of death to the celebrations of life will elicit those same emotions. The thread through it all is the author's own journey as he discovers himself and renews his spirituality. The reader is immediately pulled into the drama and nakedness, and the beauty and mystery of this incredible part of the world.
