Peace Camp XV at Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows Church will host the 15th annual Peace Camp from July 23 to July 26 from 6:00pm to 8:30 pm at the Parish Center located on Clayton Ave. and Charles St. in Vestal.

Hosting children from grades K through 6th, this four-evening event explores peace, non-violence, diversity, community building and ways to help care for ourselves, our community and our world. Teen volunteers from grade 7 thru college plan teach these concepts through activities involving art, music, games, skits and peace puppets. Over the years, the children have helped others through involvement in various community service projects and at this year’s Camp, food will be collected and donated to local food pantries and children will donate personall care items for injured soldiers. The campers will also write and design peace messages, letters and banners.

The Camp concludes with a family Peace Meal where families join together to experience the children’s camp activities and to share a meal together. The Camp admission fee of $6.00 covers the cost of the Camp tee-shirt. Families are asked to bring a dish to pass for the Peace Meal on Thursday.

Ecumenical Discussion: Remedial Christianity

Rev. Sue Davis announces a new summer series - following the ecumenical discussions of the past three years that have been lively and meaningful to many of us. The basis is a book she highly recommends: "Remedial Christianity — What Every Believer Should Know about the Faith, but Probably Doesn't" by Rev. Dr. Paul Laughlin. Laughlin is an ordained minister, professor and chair of the department of religion and philosophy at Otterbein College.

Schedule of sessions: 10 Wednesday evenings, June 13 through August 22 (except July 4), from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Place: First UMC Endicott. Selective quotes from the Bible have been used to justify slavery, war, oppression of women, condemnation of homosexuals, exclusive nationalism. Whether you consider yourself a believer or not, you may be interested in a very different framework for Biblical understanding.

This series will introduce some of the methods of historical-critical scholarship in biblical and religious studies, "placing the scriptural heart of the faith in its true historical context."

It will explore Christian Theism, the basic theological model of traditional Christianity (as well as of Judaism and Islam), and its alternatives. We will study Jesus of Nazareth and the Origins of Christianity; the Christ of Faith within the History of Christianity; Sin and Human Nature in the Christian Tradition; Grace and Salvation within the Christian Tradition; The Church, and the Churches from Pentecost to the Parousia (Second Coming of Christ); and Alternative Christian Views, the World's Religions, and the Future of the Faith.

הריסת בתים

מזה 40 שנה ישראל מיישמת מדיניות הריסת בתים כאמצעי לחץ על תושבים פלסטינים, בעיקר
במזרח ירושלים, כסוג של 'טרנספר שקט'. מאז 1967 מדינת ישראל הרסה, לפי מידע מתועד, כ-
18,000 בתים בשטחים הכבושים.

משנת 2000 ועד היום נהרסו 5,376 בתים בשטחים הכבושים, מתוכם 481 בירושלים בלבד. אלפי
בתים נוספים נמצאים תחת איום הריסה. כל בית הרוס זו משפחה הרוסה אחת, לפחות!

בניית בתים

מדי שנה אנו מארגנים מחנה בנייה, ומקימים יחד בית חדש למשפחה שביתה נהרס. בזמן של
שבועיים נבנה בית חדש מהיסודות ועד לגג, ונמסור את המפתח למשפחה. זוהי פעולה של התנגדות
אזרחית לא-אלימה, הבאה להביע קול מחאה לכיבוש הישראלי ולנישול הקהילה הפלסטינית מאדמתה
ומורשתה. מעבר למסר של סולידריות, דו שיח וחברות, זו דרך לעזור למשפחה שעברה טראומה קשה
ונותרה חסרת גג.

איך בונים בית ב-14 יום?

כפי שעשינו במחנות הקודמים - עם הרבה זיעה, רצון טוב, ליווי של צוות מקצועי והשתתפות של
מתנדבים בינלאומים, פלסטינים וישראלים (את/ה!)

פעילות במחנה

למשתתפי המחנה תהייה הזדמנות ללמוד על ה'עובדות בשטח' של הסכסוך הישראלי-פלסטיני,
במפגשי ערב עם דמויות פוליטיות, פעילים, אקדמאיים ואמנים, כמו גם ארגונים העובדים על
מנת להשתית שלום צודק בין ישראל והרשות, סרטים על הסכסוך וסיורים מודרכים למקומות שונים
של השטחים הכבושים, בירושלים ובישראל.

ישראלים מוזמנים להצטרף לימי עבודה כיחידים או כקבוצות, לפי תאום מראש

מתי מחנה הבניה נמשך מ- 14/7 עד שבת 28/7 (טקס חנוכת הבית החדש ייערך ביום
ראשון- 29/7).
