Students Not Soldiers!

4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

As support for the war in Iraq continues to drop, so do enlistment numbers, therefore making military recruiters desperate to meet their enlistment goals. This has caused them to use unfair tactics such as lying or exaggerating to students about college benefits and the current situation in Iraq, as well as disproportionately targeting minorities in "economically distressed" areas in what has been labeled a poverty draft. Such actions are unacceptable and must be stopped. Now, students, parents, teachers and concerned citizens are uniting to bring light to this issue. We don't need to go to war to get an education!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Solar Tour Shows How to Save Money, Energy

Carbondale, IL - The American Solar Energy Society's (ASES) 10th Annual
National Solar Tour happens Saturday, October 1st. Homeowners around
Southern Illinois will invite visitors in to see first-hand how renewable
energy can be used successfully to reduce energy usage and save money.

Soaring energy and fuel costs are affecting millions of Americans. For a
fast growing segment of the population, energy efficiency measures and
technology such as passive solar design, wind power, solar hot water, and
solar-electric generating systems are helping to save money.

During the Solar Tour, people can visit homes and businesses which use such
technologies, and they can also discuss ways to integrate solar energy into
their buildings. Doing so can lower electric utility costs by as much as 60
percent and increase comfort for the building users at the same time.

"The Solar Tour gives people the chance to meet directly with others who
have incorporated energy efficiency and solar design features in their
buildings to save energy," says Bob Vogl, president of the Illinois
Renewable Energy Association. "Visitors can learn about the benefits of
solar and other forms of renewable energy and see the actual saving on
utility bills in buildings in the community. But most importantly, they can
learn from their neighbors what works in their town."

The self guided Southern Illinois Solar Tour covers a number of communities
and incorporates several different structures: houses, barns, businesses,
and even an RV trailer system. Towns which have something to offer for the
10th Annual Solar Tour include Pomona, Cobden, DuQuoin, Johnston City,
Carterville, and Carbondale. Interested participants may find descriptions
and maps of the open house locations by visiting advancedenergysolution.com
or by calling A.J. Beck at Advanced Energy Solutions, 618-893-1717

Sounds of Dissent

11:00 AM - 12:00 AM

WZBC Boston College Radio 90.3fm

Produced by John Grebe and the WZBC News Staff

Show Description:
Too seldom we hear sounds of dissent in mainstream media. While no one honestly claims to have "all things considered," even our public broadcasting institutions have come to reflect their most privileged listener's interests. As they mine the wealthiest listener demographics to sell to their corporate underwriters, they distort the news. Let's clarify the crucial stories, views, and information excluded elsewhere. How can we build participatory non-commercial educational radio? Locally and globally, people are making sounds of dissent, independent of profit and advertising driven corporate bias. Please call or write in with your program ideas.

Past Featured Guests:

Noam Chomsky on the 12/16-18/98 U.S. bombing of Iraq.

Jackie Cabasso, Michael Klare, Paul Shoup, Julianne Smith, and Michael Simmons on continued U.S./NATO bombing, on U.S. ignorance of  democratic opposition in Serbia, and on U.S. use of bombings and  harmful sanctions (or their threat) for unilateral enforcement.

Documentary warns anthropogenic impacts causing the collapse of Hawaii's marine ecosystem

6:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Documentary Warns Shoreline Sprawl, Pollution and Indiscriminate Fishing Practices are Causing the Collapse of Hawaii’s Marine Ecosystem

California Premiere at the 8th Annual EarthVision International Environmental Film and Video Festival

Santa Cruz: zeroimpact productions (www.zeroimpactproductions.com) of Maui, Hawai’i announces the California premiere of their documentary, Oasis of the Pacific: Time is Running Out. The film has won the Endangered Species and Habitat category in the 8th Annual EarthVision International Environmental Film and Video Festival and will screen Saturday, October 1st in the Rio Theater, 1205 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. The evening events start at 6:45 with Oasis of the Pacific screening at 8 pm. The filmmakers, Adam Bromley and Marie Le Boeuf will be in Santa Cruz for the duration of the film festival and will be available to answer questions about their documentary. To view a map of the theater and for more details, please visit the films companion website at www.oasisofthepacific.com Tickets are now available from the Book Shop Santa Cruz and EcoGoods. A $5 donation is requested and you can call EcoGoods for more information about tickets at 831.429.5756.

Oasis of the Pacific is a 58-minute documentary that takes viewers on a revealing journey through the stunning yet endangered undersea world of the Hawaiian Islands. Striking imagery of the underwater realm is juxtaposed with the harsh and ugly realities of three major anthropogenic impacts currently overwhelming marine life in Hawai’i: shoreline sprawl, pollution and overfishing. Concerned marine biologists, experts from environmental organizations and Hawai’i residents passionately speak out against concrete sprawl and muddy runoff, pollution from irresponsible agricultural and land use practices and the mountains of plastic and derelict fishing gear found throughout the archipelago.

Also disclosed is how illicit violations committed within the fishing industry are leading to the extinction of some of the most threatened animals in the world. Paul Achitoff, the managing attorney for the Honolulu Office of Earthjustice elaborates “the fisheries in the United States are managed in a classic fox in the henhouse manner by regional fisheries management councils that are staffed almost exclusively by commercial fishing interests.“

“Your film is EXCELLENT, just EXCELLENT. Truly spectacular and superb on content, depth and breadth. So timely and beautifully focused on Hawaii, yet in a global context” is how Denise Antolini, Director of the Environmental Law Program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa described the film.

“Director and writer Adam Bromley’s film makes it difficult to argue against the claim that we are taking more than we are giving back and to continue to do so would be the end of us,” states Kawehi Haug, Senior Editor from the Honolulu Weekly in her review of the film.

“You have done us all, and the ocean a great service by directly addressing the major challenges we all face in protecting our marine heritage” proclaims Richard Murphy, Ph.D., Director of Science and Education for the Ocean Futures Society.

Producer Marie Le Boeuf says “all of us are capable of making a difference and it is the cumulative efforts of individuals that can turn the tide for the better. We believe that it is not solely the responsibility of any one government or corporation; it is simply up to us. We, as individuals, have the power... and the choice. She reiterates that “anyone interested in protecting Hawaii’s marine life should check out the companion website, which is a huge resource of information.”

The filmmakers will be on hand to take orders for the specially discounted pre-release DVD, which can also be ordered online from their website. The DVD’s will be packaged in a 100% recycled plastic case, with recycled paper printed with non-toxic ink inserts and will be “wafer sealed” rather than shrink wrapped for the most environmentally-friendly packaging available. The DVD includes the hour-long film plus 45 minutes of bonus footage including an interactive Hawaiian marine life guide and extended interviews with the experts. Go here to see video of some of the bonus material- www.oasisofthepacific.com/oppages/popupdvdclipshome.html

BayWalk Anti-war Protest

7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

We expect to have another vibrant protest at BayWalk this Saturday. While we don't anticipate any problems, bring your camera or video camera, if you're able.

One of the most notable visuals of the rally in Washington this past week was the number and diversity of signs that were made by their carriers, rather than thousands of pre-printed signs handed out. We don't have any pre-printed signs either, but we do have a wide choice of those we have made over the past 2 1/2 years. Or you can make one of your own.

Following the demonstration we will be having a potluck picnic; a grill will be available if you'd like to bring something to cook.

(Note: ACLU lawyers are working with city officials on the recent Baywalk/police harassment issues. We will post information as it becomes available.)

Location:
BayWalk is located on 2nd Ave N, between 2nd and 3rd Sts, in St Petersburg. There is plenty of parking available on the streets in the area and there is a parking garage.

Cost: Free
