2005 Boston Cyberarts Festival!

The creative connection between two of Boston’s most vital forces – the arts community and the high-tech industry – is once again in the spotlight, with more than 70 exhibitions and events in and around the Boston area from April 22 through May 8. It’s the first and largest collaboration of artists working in new technologies in all media in North America, encompassing visual art, dance, music, electronic literature, web art, and public art. For a complete listing of all events, go to our Events listing.

CyberArtCentral, the Festival’s headquarters, is located at Art Interactive, 130 Bishop Allen Drive, Cambridge (near Central Square). Festival-goers can obtain printed and CD-ROM catalogs, chat with Festival staffers, and purchase the CyberPass discount card or Festival merchandise – and view the special exhibition “Body Language” by Scott Snibbe. Special Festival hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6pm.

Lester Thurow on Globalization

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Fortune Favors the Bold:
What We Must Do To Build a New and Lasting Global Prosperity

Lester C. Thurow, renowned economist and professor of management and economics at MIT

The new global economy is linking the fortunes of every nation on every continent — for good or for ill.

Its hallmark is a rising instability and a growing inequality between the first and third worlds, in spite of rising average incomes.

The United States and other first world economies are finding it hard to recover after the boom of the 1990s and the bust of the early 21st century.

Financial crises in the third world come frequently and are increasingly severe.

Globalization is invoked to explain riots, civil disobedience, and as a factor in the rise of terrorism.

The renowned economist, Lester Thurow, argues that now is the time to shape globalization into what we want it to be — before it's too late.

38 Cameron Avenue, Suite 100
Cambridge, MA 02140
617-492-4091
info (at ) 38cameron.com

Cost: free and the public is invited

Directions: From Route 16 (Alewife Brook Parkway): Coming from West/South, take a Right on Mass. Ave. into Cambridge. (Coming from North/East take a left.) Stay in the left hand lane. Continue for about a 0.4 mile to the set of lights intersecting Massachusetts Ave and Cameron Ave. Take a left. "38 Cameron" is 100 yards up on the right. It is a partly grey/partly brick building. There will be a sandwich board sign on the sidewalk.

Coming from Harvard Sq.:
Go straight on Massachusetts Ave westbound for about 1 mile to Porter Square. Go through Porter Square (you will see the T stop on the right) and continue for just under a mile until you come to the intersection with Cameron Ave. The Cambridge bus depot is on the right just before Cameron Ave, so this is a good landmark. Take a right onto Cameron Ave. "38 Cameron" is 100 yards up on the right, a partly grey/partly brick building.  There will be a sandwich board sign on the sidewalk.

From the T: Red Line (Alewife direction)
Take the Red Line (Alewife direction) and get off at the Davis Square stop. At the turnstyle of the middle floor platform of the station go right, and up the stairs or escalator. From the breezeway at the top of the stairs go out the left door, away from the center of Davis Square. (The sign at the top of the exit says "Meacham Street"). Walk straight ahead and onto The Minute Man bike path. Follow the bike path towards Massachusetts Ave until you reach Cameron Ave (about a 5 minute walk / quarter mile). Turn right at Cameron Ave. 38 Cameron is 100 yards up on the right. It is a partly grey/partly brick building.  There will be a sandwich board sign on the sidewalk.

Parking
On weekends and evenings, parking is ample. A small lot is located at the entrance of 38 Cameron (to the left in the photo above). Additional parking is available at the back entrance of 38 Cameron. To get to the back lot, take the first right just immediately past 38 Cameron onto Tannery Brook Row, and then an immediate right again to the back entrance of 38 Cameron.
Street parking on Cameron Ave requires a Cambridge resident parking permit. There is metered parking on Mass Ave, only 100 yards away.

**Important Note**
Finding 38 Cameron can be confusing because Cameron Ave. is divided midway between Somerville and Cambridge. This means there are "2" addresses for 38 Cameron, one in Somerville, the other in Cambridge. Be sure to come to the correct address in Cambridge! (just 100 yards away from Mass Ave).

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

We will be screening "Walking by Asking", followed by a presentation and discusson on Seeds of Peace, the group that provided the logistical support for the DNC2RNC march, feeding over 10,000 people.

"Walking by Asking" documents the 258-mile DNC2RNC: Democracy Uprising March from the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Boston to the Republican National Convention (RNC) in New York City. The march lasted 28 days and crossed four states, protesting the two-party political system while celebrating grassroots community organizing. Performers Take Back the Streets!

6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SAFE--Society for Artistic Freedom and Expression--is a open group of street performers encouraging the public and the performers to reclaim public spaces.

SAFE (also known as Streetperformers Against Foolish Enforcement) plays a weekly jam and speakout at

There is usually food and political tabling going on, as well as an ongoing "Vigil Against Two Wars"--the War on the Poor and the War/Occupation in Iraq.

As of Wednesday, March 23, 2005, SAFE will have played 60 consecutive weeks, braving police harassment, bad weather, and the City Council's Downtown Ordinances (which technically prohibit SAFE's performance area).

We formed in the wake of the "Only in Santa Cruz" concert in September 2003 to encourage solidarity among street performers particularly after City Council passed the Downtown Ordinances, expanding police repression and limiting performance space.

Come down and join us--in song and speech!

Those of you who receive this in time may wish to tune in to Radio Free
Nashville on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 pm. RFN is at 98.9 FM and
can probably be heard if you are within 10 or 15 miles (as the crow

course.) If you cannot receive it on your radio, go to

We are also trying to stimulate people to phone in during our time on the
air. I can't locate the phone number now, but we will announce it
several times during our hour.

If youn might like to appear with one of us during a future program on a
Wednesday between 3 and 4 (possibly some other time would be a
possibility, too) and give your ideas about separation of church and

Untitled General Meeting

7:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Untitled, an open membership artist' cooperative association that hosts non-juried bi-monthly multi-media one night artist exhibitions across Nashville, meets every other Wednesday at Plowhaus Artist Coop on 17th Ave So between Russell and Fatherland in East Nashville. for more info visit www.untitlednashville.org

Wanna be in a show?

Showing with Untitled is easy. All it takes is these very simple
steps:

1. PAY One week before the show, mail a check for $15, payable to
Untitled to the following address (or just bring it to a meeting):

Untitled
P.O. Box 40232
Nashville, TN 37204

2. REGISTER No later than midnight on the Sunday before the show, visit
www.untitlednashville.org and use the online form to send in the title,
dimensions and price of your piece. Each artist or collaboration team
may
submit one piece. It can be any size, any medium, and any price.

3. DROP OFF The Wednesday before the show, bring your piece to the
designated drop-off point between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Sign in to make
sure
we know we have your work.

4. GET PAID If your art sells, pick up your money. Untitled charges no
commission, and if the buyer pays by check or cash, you can pick it up
the
night of the show. If the buyer uses a credit card, there will be a 3%
credit card fee (which goes to the credit card company, not Untitled),
and
you can pick up a check at the next Untitled meeting. You'll need to
arrange for your buyer to pick up your work at the end of the night, or
you can arrange to deliver it, if you prefer.

5. PICK-UP On the night of the show, if your piece does not sell, you
must take it down and take it home with you at 10:00 PM. Untitled is
not
responsible for work left at the venue.

That's it! No jury, no pressure, no commission. Just bring your stuff
and we'll hang it up.

If you'd like to get a little more involved, you can also take these
optional steps:

Come to a Wednesday meeting - they are casual and short, and usually
held
in a place that serves beer, if you are so inclined. Meetings are a
good
place to get to know other artists, share ideas, and find out about
other
art opportunities in town.

Volunteer to help with the show - we need lots of volunteers to make
each
show run smoothly. Folks are needed to help distribute posters and
handbills, handle publicity, prepare the venue, hang the show, and to
help
with set-up, coordination and clean-up on the day of the show. You can
also volunteer to help with other ongoing Untitled projects like the
web
site, newsletter, workshops, fundraisers, etc.

Submit a jpeg of your art work to publicity-AT-untitlednashville.org for
possible inclusion in press releases. Local papers frequently publish
images to help spread the word about Untitled shows, and this is a
great
opportunity to get your work seen.

Organize an Untitled event of your own - Untitled has resources to help
put on smaller art shows and events. If you have a great idea, gather
a
few folks to help you put it together, and send email to
publicity-AT-untitlednashville.org to learn more about using the group's
press contacts, logo, and name to help publicize the event.

Untitled is all of us, and it takes a lot of people working together
to
make it successful. No shame if you can't help out, but please do if
you
can.

Interfaith Peace Vigil

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Fellow Ithacans...

You are invited to join an Interfaith Peace Vigil in DeWitt Park on Wednesday, May 4, 7pm - 8:30pm. The organizing group has been moved to gather within a circle of prayer and unity in response to the violence and suffering of war, especially of our Arab and Muslim sisters and brothers in this country and around the world. We are equally concerned and pray for the welfare of US soldiers in Iraq and for the sacrifices made by their families.

In an attempt to make this gathering a genuine interfaith experience, the organizing group has sought input, advice, and feedback from many faith perspectives. Readings, prayers, and ritual will be shared from a variety of religious communities that express how they envision peace. We intend this event to represent a circle of support and respect in which we listen to each other, try to find our common ground with each other, and celebrate, in public witness, our passion for peace in the world.

There will be a designated space in the park for vigilers to place pictures, photos, and objects that represent the consequences of war and also the vision we bring to the creation of a world where peace flourishes. Participants may want to bring a chair.

Please join us.

DeWitt Park, Ithaca, NY
