"A Tribe of His Own"

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Documentary, "A Tribe of His Own: The Journalism of P. Sainath"
Indian journalist P. Sainath will be speaking in Austin, at Bass
Lecture Hall, at 7 pm on February 17. Learn about his work in this
engaging documentary.
In India, nearly 400 million people live in poverty. Believing that
responsible journalism can help to change things for the better, P.
Sainath wrote a series of 70 newspaper articles for The Times of India
chronicling the living conditions in the ten poorest districts of the
country. For two years Sainath lived in the communities he wrote about;
he traveled across India, often on foot, in hill areas, drought-prone
areas, and tribal areas to put the issue of poverty back on the
national agenda. According to Sainath the shift from hard-hitting,
truth-seeking journalism to innocuous, promotional stenography goes
hand in hand with the increase of globalization. This, he believes, has
also contributed to the 1990s becoming "the time of the most gross
social inequality since the Second World War."
"Mesmerizing...In less than 60 minutes, this little film about an
Indian reporter delivers powerful insights into the enduring story of
human suffering and its shining corollary, imperishable hope. Equally
interesting is the way it turns a cold analytical eye on mainstream
journalists like me and challenges us to do more with the privilege of
free expression bestowed upon us by democracy." - Stephen Hume,
Vancouver Sun

Location:
Garrison 1, UT campus, immediately southeast of the UT Tower,
map at http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/gar.html
Visit http://ThirdCoastActivist.org for details about this documentary
and Sainath's talk on February 17.

The Implications of Four More Years

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The Implications of Four More Years Discussion Series

Alan Wolfe's work in recent years has focused on cultural and religious issues in American politics. Wolfe's One Nation, After All (1999) argued that the "culture war" was largely the work of intellectuals; most Americans were not deeply divided over moral issues. His forthcoming book, The Transformation of American Religion uses ethnographic data to argue that American religion has been shaped by American culture more than the other way around.

OVNI 2005 Resistencias
Archivos del Observatorio

Inauguración 25 de Enero:
Programa especial, de las 20h.30 a las 23h.00.

In Limbo, 43', Simon Arazi, Bélgica, 2001. (FRAGMENTO)

What Barry Says, 3', Knife- Party, GB, 2004.

Babylon Archives, 40', Abu Ali, Retroyou, España, 2004.(FRAGMENTO)

Meen Erhabe (Who is the Terrorist?), 10', Jackie Salloum, Palestina /EE.UU, 2003.

American Campaign to Suppress Islam, 28', Hibz ut-Tahrir, Khilafah,G.B.,2004. (FRAGMENTO)

Cocktail Hour, 10', Infernal Noise Brigade, EE.UU, 2003.
El segundo ¡Tchkung! Vs.

Bagdad rap

FOURTH WORLD WAR

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Fourth World war, a Big Noise Film will be shown
on Tuesday January 25th at 18:00 at the Bourdon
Building (the lecture theatre is on the first floor)
in Glasgow School of Art. The screening is open to all
and is free. We will however be collecting donations
for the Camecorder Guerillas and to send to Big Noise
so please bring a little cash.

We invite you to stay a bit after the film to discuss
the issues that the Fourth Wold War brings up,
especially in the light of the upcoming G8 summit
taking place in Gleaneagles in July. It would be good
to use this opportunity to raise some awareness for
those that might not know what the G8 is or why we
should be particularly concerned about it. A focuss
will also be put on the power of video activism and
information manipulation within the mainstream media.
The idea is not to bash people over the head with
information but to help them understand the global
situation and encourage them to get involved.

This is also an oportunity to bring flyers and make a
short introduction to your group so that people know
what's going on if they want to get involved.
(if you would like to talk about your group and or
drop off some flyers, please send me a note so that I
can prepare a little introduction)

Two flyers can be downloaded
off the Big Noise website (you just need to add the
date/time and location)
www.bignoisefilms.com/4ww/promo/index.htm
You can also check out the trailer there.

If a lot of people come to this documentary then
there will be more within the Art School. Also please
arrive on time because doors will be shut during
projection.
