Meet Organic Farmers from Spoutwood, and watch a video

5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Potluck dinner at 5:30. Bring something healthful.

At 8:00 or so, I'll show video of an interesting talk given by Percy Schmeiser at the 2003 Bioneers conference. (Extra credit if you already know who Percy Schmeiser is!) He'll tell of his experiences as a farmer dealing with Monsanto and their (lousy) policies on genetically engineered crops. I feel as passionate about sharing this video as I do about, well, say, CSA snow peas! (A reference better understood, I admit, by people who have enjoyed the snow peas from Spoutwood.)

Guests include members of the Spoutwood Farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project, along with the organic farmer. You don't have to be a Spoutwood farm CSA member to attend.

This is incorrectly listed, as well, on Thursday (I don't know how to delete that posting) But it is REALLY happening on Saturday, the 22nd.

3443 Guilford Terrace, Baltimore, MD 21218

Food Not Bombs

12:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Food Not Bombs shares free vegetarian food with hungry people and protests war and poverty throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Food Not Bombs is organizing for an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.

We also support actions against the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people and the destruction of the earth.

Food Not Bombs is an all volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolence.

Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process.

Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in city parks to anyone without restriction.

The groups also serve free vegetarian meals at protests and other events.

Food Not Bombs works in coalition with groups like Earth First!, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Anarchist Black Cross, the IWW, Homes Not Jails, Anti Racist Action, In Defense of Animals, the Free Radio Movement and other organizations on the cutting edge of positive social change and resistance to the new global austerity program.

We hope you will join us in taking direct action towards creating a world free from domination, coercion and violence.

BENEFIT FOR THE MALAIKA PROJECT

An international collaboration to improve the living conditions for people in Western Tanzania

Rick DellaRatta - Piano and Vocals
Stacy Dillard - sax
Peter Matthews - bass
Curtis Watts - drums

Rick Della Ratta, internationally renowned jazz pianist, headlines the Jazz For Peace concert tour benefiting the Malaika Project. Malaika Project: a multidisciplinary community based project in Nyamuswa, Tanzania. Nyamuswa is a small town just west of the famous Serengeti National Park. We work in partnership with local people, helping to improve living conditions from the ground up with local contributions and an international collaboration. The community decides for themselves what their priorities are, demonstrates a commitment with local resources, and Malaika Project brings in volunteers and funding towards the common goals of reducing mortality, improving literacy, and helping the local economy to grow.

The Malaika Project works with the entire community regardless of ethnicity, religion, or politics through both private and public collaboration. The hope of the Malaika Project is to improve local capacity through these partnerships to make lasting improvements in the quality of life of community members.

"Interview" (film)

9:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Screening:
January 22 (Saturday) 9pm

January 26 (Wednesday) 7pm

Interview
Directed by Theo van Gogh
Netherlands, 2003, color, 90 min.
With Pierre Bokma, Katja Schuurman
Dutch with English subtitles

A news reporter is given the task of covering a film star on the same evening that a major political event is unfolding. Frustrated with his mandatory assignment in entertainment journalism, the reporter is surprised to find an intellectual adversary in his subject. Confining most of the film’s action to exchanges between the two lead actors in the starlet’s apartment, the late Theo van Gogh uses minimal means to construct a telling dual portrait.

Tribute to Guerilla filmmaker

11:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Guerilla filmmaker Sarah Jacobson passed away last year at the too-young age of 32. She was an important voice in independent, underground film, and a real champion of DIY filmmaking. While Sarah may no longer be with us, her films live on, and we celebrate her work with three special days of programs.

Sat Jan 22 midnite - Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains
If it weren't for Sarah's love of this spunky-punky lost classic, a whole generation may have missed out on the best angry girl rock film ever made. The year is 198__ and angry teenager Corinne "Third Degree" Burns (a really young Diane Lane) decides to form a Shaggs-esque with her cousin (and also very young Laura Dern) and sister and hit the tour bus with an angry British punk band - played by actual members of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, and fronted by Ray Winstone (QUADROPHENIA, SEXY BEAST). In true angry grrrl fashion, they beat the old white men at their own game and become an overnight sensation with song titles like "Waste of Time" and catch phrase "We don't put out!" An amazing cult classic not available on video!

Location:
Coolidge Corner Theatre

Cost: $6 each

Directions: The Coolidge Corner Theatre is located 1/2 block from the corner of Harvard and Beacon Streets in the Coolidge Corner shopping district of Brookline. We're just minutes from downtown Boston and Harvard Square.

By train: take the Green Line (C branch to Cleveland Circle) trolley from downtown to Coolidge Corner via Beacon Street. The Coolidge Corner stop is at Harvard Street, 5-10 minutes from Kenmore Square.

By bus: take bus #66, Dudley/Harvard Square.

All buses and trolleys stop at the Harvard Street/ Beacon Street intersection.
Both lines are also on the night owl route - operating until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday nights.

From Mass Pike, 90: Take exit 18 Allston/Brighton. As you exit tolls, stay to left for Allston exit and merge with Cambridge St. Follow until you reach Harvard Ave on your left, after the overpass at the intersection with the frightening "Captain Fishbones" sign. Take the left onto Harvard Ave and follow through Allston and across Commonwealth Ave, continuing for about 1.5 miles. Just before reaching the major intersection of Harvard and Beacon St, you will notice our giant theatre marquee on your right.

From Interstate 93: Take the Storrow Drive exit and follow to Storrow Drive (this navigation changes periodically because of Big Dig construction, so watch for the signs). Take Storrow Drive to the Kenmore Square exit. As the exit splits, stay in the right hand lane. Take the first right onto Beacon St. Follow Beacon St through Kenmore Square (past the legendary Citgo sign), staying in the center lane. After you cross the overpass, keep going straight ahead, following the trolley tracks along Beacon St until you reach the intersection of Beacon and Harvard St, landmarked by a large Tudor style building with a clocktower (and a Walgreens) on the corner. You'll see us one half block up Harvard, but continue on Beacon to Center St and turn right to access our parking lot behind the building.

From Route 9: Route 9 inbound to the Brookline Village/Harvard St intersection. The Brookline fire station is on your right. Go through the intersection and take a right immediately after the fire station, and loop around the back. You can now turn right and cross back over Route 9 onto Harvard St. Follow Harvard St through Brookline Village, about one mile to Beacon St. Cross Beacon St and you will immediately see our marquee on your left. Parking is along Beacon, or go around the block and enter the lot behind our building on Center St.

Contracultura i lluita armada als EUA 1960-1985

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Weekends of Anti War Action

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

New Year Greetings Comrades and Friends, we got news from War Resistance of their meeting on Tuesday past, 11th Jan, but we were unable to make it. Anyway we emailed them regarding our suggestion that we follow the success of the December Weekend Of Anti War Action with similar events in January and February- on the 22nd/ 23rd Jan and 26th/ 27th Feb both at 1-3pm by Dewars statue in Buchanan St. Glasgow. As to the following month, March, the Scottish Labour Party meets in conference in Dundee on 4th/ 5th Friday/ Saturday. Dundee Coalition For Justice Not War is said to have already called a demo and there is a suggestion that this be the Scottish Anti War event.

I saw my first Labour Party election poster today, rosy pink background and old stylee font urging us not to let the Tories raise unemployment again! If ever an election called for serious, sustained and consistent subvertising this one does! Lets get organised! The Labour Party, is the War Party of British imperialism and we need to challenge them everywhere as the build up to Election. No Vote for Labour Imperialists! No vote for the War Party!

Dignity For All Students Town Meeting

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

January 22nd at 2 pm is a Town Hall Meeting about the upcoming Dignity for All Students bill. This bill is neccessary to protect students from all forms of harrassment and violence, from other students and school officials alike, especially in the case of gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. Right now, in FL there are no laws protecting students from harrassment on school property. We need to get as many students, parents, school officials, teachers/professors, interested citizens, and local chapters involved with this meeting as possible to stand up for this bill, as it affects all students and education officials.

There will be speakers including school officials, students, and local chapter groups, related professionals as well as a Panel Discussion. We would love to have as many citizens/students/teachers involved in this as possible. I have a press release and a copy of the bill (to distribute)if anyone knows an interested local party. Please contact me back by email. Also, we are trying to find people willing to speak about personal stories regarding student/teacher harrassment or related speakers. If there is anyone interested in speaking about these issues, or knows someone who might, please contact me by email or phone ASAP. Please come out and show support for the Dignity for All Students bill, because students deserve safe schools.

Stand Up to TN Legislators (Jan 22) Defend Reproductive Freedom!

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Come to the Rally for Women’s Rights and tell legislators that they have more important things to do than to scheme to control women’s wombs and restrict marriage rights.

As is their habit on the anniversary of Roe, the Tennessee Right-to-Life organization will be rallying at the Capitol and praying for the passage of the anti-choice amendment. Your presence will help ensure that the voice of the radical right is not the only voice our legislators hear.
January 22 marks the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that held that “The states are not free, under the guise of protecting maternal health or potential life, to intimidate women into continuing pregnancies.”

For Immediate Release:

Rally for Women’s Rights: Stand Up to TN Legislators
Sponsor: Tennessee Guerilla Women
Location: Downtown Nashville, Charlotte Avenue (sidewalk facing the Capitol)
Time: 2:00pm Saturday, January 22, 2005

The TN General Assembly has returned and all indications are that they have not returned in order to promote the health and well-being of Tennesseans, but rather they have returned with plans to wreak havoc on the rights of women, the gay and lesbian community, and God only knows who else.

On the basis of religious beliefs which hold that a cluster of cells is a person entitled to more rights than a woman, legislators intend to inject the following amendment into the state constitution and thereby remove the state’s constitutional provision which protects a woman’s right to control her own body.

''Nothing in this constitution secures or protects the right to an abortion or the funding thereof. The legislature shall have the sole authority to make and shall make such provisions for abortion as it determines are reasonably necessary for victims of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother (sic).''

In the eyes of many TN legislators, a woman becomes a mother at the ‘moment of conception,’ and all women are destined to become mothers. Lawmakers in the 19th century had remarkably similar views. If the amendment succeeds and the Bush Administration achieves its goal of overturning Roe v. Wade, the women who can afford to do so will flee to states such as New York for legal and safe abortions, many women will be forced to continue their pregnancies, and untold numbers of Tennessee women will resort to illegal and dangerous back-alley abortions.

Tennessee Legislators – What Are They Good For?

While the TN legislature spends untold tax-payer funded hours scheming to rob women of the right to make their own decisions about when or if they will become mothers, our state ranks as one of the three unhealthiest states in the nation; only Mississippi and Louisiana fare worse.

While TN legislators plot to ensure that every woman is a mother and every marriage is a heterosexual union, babies have a far better chance of surviving their first year of life in Havana and Beijing than in Tennessee.

While TN legislators focus on the sanctity of the zygote or potential life, Tennessee’s shamefully high infant mortality rate continues to rise. If legislators would only turn their attention away from the project of controlling women’s wombs long enough to focus on the problems of the living, they might be able to do something about the horrific fact that Tennessee ranks 48 in the nation in infant mortality. A baby has a better chance of surviving its first year of life in 47 other states. As if this wasn’t bad enough, TN ranks at the bottom of a nation which has a higher infant mortality rate than Cuba, China and 38 other nations.

If TN legislators had spent as many hours working to ensure that all Tennesseans have the right to adequate health care as they have spent on their obsession with controlling women and gays & lesbians, the infant mortality rate might well be on the decline and untold numbers of babies might still be among the living. Gee, haven’t they heard about the sanctity of human life?

If TN legislators succeed in their goal of chipping away at women’s freedom -- by passing a constitutional amendment aimed at giving a cluster of cells more rights than Tennessee women -- yet more women and their families will be on the path to poverty, despair, and back-alley abortions.

Your presence will help ensure that the voice of the radical right is not the only voice our legislators hear.( www.tennesseerighttolife.org/news_center/rally_for_life.htm )

Come and urge Democratic legislators to Stand Up and Represent the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party for a change!

New Britain Food Not Bombs benefit show

7:00 PM - 12:00 AM

The New Britain chapter of Food Not Bombs is throwing a benefit show on Saturday January 22, 2005 from 7pm until midnight at South Congregational Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain, Connecticut. The entrance fee is either $5 or a donation of five vegetarian food items. We will be having spoken word and music from Green Flem and the Nasty Maggots, Perfect Silence, The Human Beings, Pete Serge, and more. This is an all-ages show.
New Britain Food Not Bombs serves hot, vegetarian meals to hungry residents every Sunday by City Hall. We believe that giving away free food in public places forces passers-by to examine their own complicity and involvement in allowing the unaccountable global economic system that oppresses each of us. Although we have had generous donations in the past, we are having trouble meeting the needs of the hungry in these winter months. We are having this event to collect food and raise money, which will be used for cooking supplies and produce.
For more information write to newbritainfnb-AT-riseup.net or go to newbritainfnb.blogspot.com
