ALA President's Program
Creating an Advocacy Epidemic
Sunday, January 16, 2005, 3 - 5pm
In today’s difficult economic conditions, it is more important than ever before to stand up and speak out for libraries to ensure that we retain our funding and support. Join ALA President Carol A. Brey-Casiano as she welcomes Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, and a panel of distinguished speakers in an exciting program that demonstrates how to mobilize individual grassroots advocacy efforts in your community into a nation-wide advocacy ‘epidemic.’ By turning passive support into educated action, we can enhance the image of and increase support for libraries, librarians and library workers, bring increased attention to critical national issues such as literacy and equity of access, and expand the global reach of librarians. Whether you are an experienced library advocate or are taking your first steps along this important path, you can’t afford to miss this program. We Can Do It!/Si, Se Puede!
Sponsored by Little, Brown and Company

Author Forum
The Friday afternoon Author Forum has three speakers on the panel this year.
Come and hear these exciting New England authors
Friday, January 14, 4pm - 5:15pm, Convention Center
Chris Bohjalian, author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Midwives, is once again engaging readers in his latest novel, Before You Know Kindness. Bohjalian is the author of nine novels, various magazine credits, and currently has three works in development for movies (The Buffalo Soldier, The Law of Similars, and Water Witches), establishing him as not only as “America’s answer to Joanna Trollope” (Kirkus), but an American treasure.
Sponsored by Random House

Nathaniel Philbrick takes his fans on yet another riveting voyage with his latest book Sea of Glory: America’s Voyage of Discovery-The U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Sea of Glory integrates his esteem and acute knowledge of history with his proclivity for compelling drama, while he discuss the journey from the South Pacific to the Antarctic, Pacific Northwest to New York City. Philbrick is currently working on a novel about the voyage of the Mayflower.
Sponsored by Penguin Putnam

Tom Perrotta is the author of several works of fiction, including Joe College and Election, which was made into the acclaimed 1999 movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick. Perrotta’s latest novel, Little Children finds him illuminating some new yet familiar territory-the American suburb.  Hailed as his best work, Kirkus calls Perrotta “an accomplished comic novelist extends his range brilliantly”.
Sponsored by Holtzbrinck Publishers including St. Martin's Press; Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Henry Holt; Picador; Tor Books and Audio Renaissance

Food Not Bombs

12:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Food Not Bombs shares free vegetarian food with hungry people and protests war and poverty throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Food Not Bombs is organizing for an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.

We also support actions against the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people and the destruction of the earth.

Food Not Bombs is an all volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolence.

Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process.

Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in city parks to anyone without restriction.

The groups also serve free vegetarian meals at protests and other events.

Food Not Bombs works in coalition with groups like Earth First!, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Anarchist Black Cross, the IWW, Homes Not Jails, Anti Racist Action, In Defense of Animals, the Free Radio Movement and other organizations on the cutting edge of positive social change and resistance to the new global austerity program.

We hope you will join us in taking direct action towards creating a world free from domination, coercion and violence.

FUR PROTEST - NEW LOCATION

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Neiman Marcus is a Texas-based chain that sells fur.

Please RSVP at: rayshick (at) earthlink.net

Signs and literature provided.

Weather permitting event; check email or call 978-257-7062 Saturday morning for cancellation details.

DRESS WARMLY, HANDWARMERS ARE GREAT AND CAN BE SLIPPED INTO BOOTS AS WELL!

WHY: Farmed fur animals are kept in tiny, filthy cages and often go insane. Fur bearing animals receive zero protections under the Humane Slaughter Act. They are killed by anal or vaginal electrocution, stomping, having their necks broken, or poison injected directly into their hearts to not spoil their fur. Animals electrocuted through their genitals often convulse for two or more minutes before succumbing to massive heart attack.

Trapped animals suffer awful, slow deaths in body gripping traps. They often chew off their legs or other body parts in a failed attempt to escape. If still alive when traps are checked they are usually stomped or clubbed to death.

Location:
Neiman Marcus, Back Bay, right outside Au Bon Pain

Directions: By Commuter Rail - From the North/Northwest - Take the Commuter Rail
into North Station. Transfer to either the Orange or Green Line.
From the South/Southwest - Take the Commuter Rail into Back Bay
Station. Follow the signs for Dartmouth Street. Exit the station,
cross over Dartmouth Street and Copley Place is directly in front of
you.

By MBTA - If you are taking the Orange Line. Get off at the Back
Bay/South End stop. Follow the signs for Dartmouth Street. Exit the
station, cross over Dartmouth Street and Copley Place is directly in
front you. If you are taking the Green Line (B, C, D or E). Get off
at the Copley stop. Exit the station and you will be at the
intersection of Boylston Street and Dartmouth Street. Proceed up
Dartmouth (keeping the Boston Public Library on your right). At
second intersection (corner of Stuart Street and Dartmouth Street)
you will see Copley Place immediately to your right.

From the Airport - Follow signs for Boston/Sumner Tunnel. Stay in
the left lane through the tunnel. Take Route 93 North, stay in the
right lane and take the Storrow Drive Exit. Follow Storrow Drive for
approximately .5 miles. Take the Copley Square Exit (this is a left
hand exit). Turn right onto Beacon Street. At your 4th intersection
turn left onto Exeter Street. Follow Exeter Street to the end (the
intersection of Huntington Avenue). The entrance for the Copley
Place Parking Garage is slightly to the right in front of you,
across Huntington Avenue.

From the North: (New Hampshire, Maine, North Shore) - Take Route
93/Route 1 South. From Route 93 South take the Storrow Drive Exit.
Follow Storrow Drive for approximately .5 miles. Take the Copley
Square Exit (this is a left hand exit). Turn right onto Beacon
Street. At your 4th intersection turn left onto Exeter Street.
Follow Exeter Street to the end (the intersection of Huntington
Avenue). The entrance for the Copley Place Parking Garage is
slightly to the right in front of you, across Huntington Avenue.

From the South: (Rhode Island, Cape Cod, South Shore) - Take Route
93 North. Take the Massachusetts Avenue/Roxbury Exit. Turn right
onto Massachusetts Avenue. Follow approximately 1.5 miles to the
intersection of Huntington Avenue (Symphony Hall is on the corner).
Turn left onto Huntington Avenue. The entrance to Copley Place
Parking Garage is on your right at the set of lights immediately
after the glass pedestrian walkway.

From the West: (New York, Connecticut) - Go East on the
Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90). Take the Prudential Center/Copley
Square Exit #22. When the exit divides, stay to your right (Copley
Square) and you will exit onto Huntington Avenue (the Westin Hotel
will be on your left). Drive around the Westin Hotel, keeping the
hotel immediately on your left at all times. At the set of lights
just beyond the hotel, you want to be in the far left lane, turn
left to enter the Copley Place Parking Garage.

PARKING:
Street parking will be tough so we highly recommend the Copley
Parking Garage. Be sure to get your ticket validated at any one of
the stores in the mall.

Other Parking Garages:
Additional parking is available at the Prudential Center Parking
Garage, which is connected to the hotel by a pedestrian walkway, and
nearby at the Westin Hotel Parking Garage and the Dartmouth Street
Garage. Copley is the cheapest, we think, especially with the store
validation.

Support Vigil at Franklin County Jail for Richard Sitcha Saturday

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Richard Sitcha is a para-legal from Cameroon and formerly a Hartford resident, who was unjustly arrested and imprisoned by the Department of Homeland Security. He was arrested in September 2003 under a "Pilot Program," part of the Department of Immigration and Naturalization which arrested immigrants before their deportation appeals, but never charged them with any crime. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday Traprock Peace Center supports the initiative of neighbors to hold a vigil outside the Franklin County Jail. Quotes, excerpts of writings and songs appropriate for the occasion are welcomed, or simply stand in solidarity. For more information call 773-7427

Location:
Franklin County Jail, Elm and Allen Streets, Greenfield, MA.
