ALA President's Program
Creating an Advocacy Epidemic
Sunday, January 16, 2005, 3 - 5pm
In today’s difficult economic conditions, it is more important than ever before to stand up and speak out for libraries to ensure that we retain our funding and support. Join ALA President Carol A. Brey-Casiano as she welcomes Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, and a panel of distinguished speakers in an exciting program that demonstrates how to mobilize individual grassroots advocacy efforts in your community into a nation-wide advocacy ‘epidemic.’ By turning passive support into educated action, we can enhance the image of and increase support for libraries, librarians and library workers, bring increased attention to critical national issues such as literacy and equity of access, and expand the global reach of librarians. Whether you are an experienced library advocate or are taking your first steps along this important path, you can’t afford to miss this program. We Can Do It!/Si, Se Puede!

Protest Walmart Groundbreaking - East Nashville

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM

For Immediate Release:

East Nashville Greens to host Protest of Walmart
10am Friday January 14th
Gallatin Road and Douglas
(grounds of the new East Nashville Walmart)

Walmart, the world's largest corporation, is scheduled to have a ground breaking for a new store this Friday at 10:00am to begin the process of colonizing East Nashville. Members of the East Nashville Green Party are going to gather on the corner of Douglas Ave and Gallatin Road to tell Walmart to "Go Home" and "We Don't Want Walmart in Our Neighborhood." Members of the East Nashville Green Party and sympathizers will wear black armbands to mourn the loss of jobs and lower wages that Walmart will bring to the neighborhood.

Jon VanderHarst, of the East Nashville Greens says that Walmart is definitely going to hurt East Nashville both economically and in terms of community. "Basically what you have here is the largest corporation in the world coming into a poor community and offering cheaper prices by paying workers less than the competition and not offering them any benefits. It is ironic that while the governor is eliminating Tenncare for poor people, Walmart is busy building a store in our neighborhood. They will not offer their employees health insurance, and they are not going to be able to make enough money to buy their own health insurance, and now they can't get Tenncare so they are basically screwed."

Local organizers predict that Walmart will most likely put the HG Hill Grocery store or else the local Kroger grocery store out of business. Kroger is a Union store that pays it's employees a living wage. The opening of this new Walmart is projected to lead to a net job loss for the community, as well as providing lower wages and no benefits for most of its employees.

The East Nashville Green Party is also concerned about the Urban Zoning Overlay for historic East Nashville which has been trashed in order to bring Walmart into town. "We had an urban zoning overlay that was designed to encourage more pedestrian traffic and less automobile traffic as well as to preserve the beauty of our historic neighborhoods, and Nashville's city council basically trashed this overlay in order to build the new Walmart. This has been a real loss for East Nashville," notes Vanderharst, who was active in efforts to keep Walmart out of East Nashville.

Demonstrators plan to gather shortly before the official groundbreaking at 10:00am. People are encouraged to bring signs and wear black armbands mourning the loss of jobs and economic devastation that Walmart brings in its wake.
