MonkeyWrench Movie Mondays presents Hackers!

8:00 PM - 11:30 PM

Can you believe it? 10 years since Crash Overide (aka Zero Cool), Acid Burn, Phantom Phreak and the Cereal Killer and the gang rollerbladed their way into our hearts and to victory over Mr. The (Don't call me Eugene)Plague. More pop culture references than you can shake a stick at. (Both the hero and the skateboard riding villain quote Travis Bickel!!?!) Being a nerd has never been so sexy. I mean really.Horny teenagers in goofy clothes avert an eco disaster and triumph over the government. The romantic montage is Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie commiting cyber pranks on the hapless government Agent Gill. They put fake ads in the personals! They mark him as deceased on his permanent record! Oh, those zany kids. Can you hear the cash registers ringing as Hollywood tries to commidify another youth sub-culture that exists largely in thier own fevered brain? As loudly as the hip "Rave" sound track. There are cameos by both Penn of Penn and Teller and Marc Anthony!!! This movie is both so bad and so good on so many levels the only thing you can do is come out and see it.

Holy Water-Gate: Abuse Cover-Up in the Catholic Church

7:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Director Mary Healey Conlon and producer Louise Rosen in person
HOLY WATER-GATE examines nineteen years of an emerging crisis in the Catholic Church. Director Mary Healey Conlon examines the historic events of the clergy sex abuse scandals, and introduces key players involved in the sexual abuse scandal, including victims, whistle-blower priests and a senior ranking US Cardinal who is called upon by the Vatican to control a waxing maelstrom. The film brings the viewer deep within the institutional mind of the Catholic Church: a powerful institution that now promises to rectify the horrors of the abuse it enabled upon thousands of children.

Location:
Coolidge Corner Theatre

Directions: The Coolidge Corner Theatre is located 1/2 block from the corner of Harvard and Beacon Streets in the Coolidge Corner shopping district of Brookline. We're just minutes from downtown Boston and Harvard Square.

By train: take the Green Line (C branch to Cleveland Circle) trolley from downtown to Coolidge Corner via Beacon Street. The Coolidge Corner stop is at Harvard Street, 5-10 minutes from Kenmore Square.

By bus: take bus #66, Dudley/Harvard Square.

All buses and trolleys stop at the Harvard Street/ Beacon Street intersection.
Both lines are also on the night owl route - operating until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday nights.

From Mass Pike, 90: Take exit 18 Allston/Brighton. As you exit tolls, stay to left for Allston exit and merge with Cambridge St. Follow until you reach Harvard Ave on your left, after the overpass at the intersection with the frightening "Captain Fishbones" sign. Take the left onto Harvard Ave and follow through Allston and across Commonwealth Ave, continuing for about 1.5 miles. Just before reaching the major intersection of Harvard and Beacon St, you will notice our giant theatre marquee on your right.

From Interstate 93: Take the Storrow Drive exit and follow to Storrow Drive (this navigation changes periodically because of Big Dig construction, so watch for the signs). Take Storrow Drive to the Kenmore Square exit. As the exit splits, stay in the right hand lane. Take the first right onto Beacon St. Follow Beacon St through Kenmore Square (past the legendary Citgo sign), staying in the center lane. After you cross the overpass, keep going straight ahead, following the trolley tracks along Beacon St until you reach the intersection of Beacon and Harvard St, landmarked by a large Tudor style building with a clocktower (and a Walgreens) on the corner. You'll see us one half block up Harvard, but continue on Beacon to Center St and turn right to access our parking lot behind the building.

From Route 9: Route 9 inbound to the Brookline Village/Harvard St intersection. The Brookline fire station is on your right. Go through the intersection and take a right immediately after the fire station, and loop around the back. You can now turn right and cross back over Route 9 onto Harvard St. Follow Harvard St through Brookline Village, about one mile to Beacon St. Cross Beacon St and you will immediately see our marquee on your left. Parking is along Beacon, or go around the block and enter the lot behind our building on Center St.

Santa Cruz Indymedia

Santa Cruz Indymedia meeting

5:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SANTA CRUZ INDYMEDIA NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Keeping up this site as a source of news and events for the activist community is hard work, and we are always looking for new faces and fresh voices! There are tons of ways to get involved with the local, people-controlled media that we call Indymedia. (People-controlled media... what a radical idea!)

We need original reporting! First and foremost, Indymedia is the place where you can tell your stories and report on what the corporate media won't tell you. Go to an action? Write about what you saw here. See an eye-opening presentation? Write about what you learned here. It only takes a second to hit the publish button, and you can get your story out!

Santa Cruz Indymedia currently meets the second and fourth Monday of each month, 5:00 PM, at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos (1817 Soquel Ave).

Next Santa Cruz Indymedia Meeting:

Tsunami Global Vigil for the Global Village

All day

Worldwide Vigils to take place -
Global Vigil for the Global Village

For Immediate Release
Friday, 07 January, 2004

Issued simultaneously in San Francisco, Toronto, Tel Aviv, Hamburg, Brisbane, Grand Canary Island, Copenhagen, Zagreb, Vienna, Geneva –

Global Vigils will take place on Sunday, 9 January, Monday, 10 January and Wednesday, 26 January 2005 in cities across the planet.

The earthquake and tsunami hit Asia on Sunday December 26th, 2004. We did not mourn immediately because we knew so little. Soon, a fuller understanding of what happened crossed our consciousness. We realised that the earthquake and tsunami HAD hit Asia – but it had also hit the whole world.

Some municipalities around the world and, to a lesser extent, some countries, have observed vigils. While we applaud these efforts, we feel more is needed. We have seen a trauma delivered to the earth and to humans like no other in recent memory.

Towards that end, we need to pause, reflect, grieve, ponder, and heal. And we need to do this on a global scale. We need to connect and reconnect. With our neighbours next door, neighbours across the border and neighbours across the continents.

Why? Because the world must catch its breadth. And because each individual needs to say, "I must catch my breadth." This Global Vigil isn't about death tolls or mainstream's fascination with which country is giving the most money etc."

This is
about taking some time to stop and think, reflect and connect - break from
the media madness and have your own thoughts and your own real feelings.

In Toronto, vigil locations are as follows:
Sunday, 9 JANUARY: Multiple Toronto locations, meet at 4:30 pm at any of the four gatherings. Withrow Park, north end of the Park; Trinity Bellwoods Park, by the Wolf and Tree Installation art Grange Park, by the wading pool; Dundas Square, (Yonge and Dundas) Streets, Downtown.

Monday, 10 JANUARY: Dundas Square 4:30 - 6:30 pm; York University, Vari Hall Foyer 5 pm

Wednesday, 26 JANUARY: Details to follow
