Kentucky Fried Cruelty (protest)

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

We need your help to speak on behalf of chickens being tortured by KFC!

Please join Noah Lewis and PETA to protest KFC. Come out and show people that the secret in KFC's secret recipe is the torture of millions of chickens.

KFC is responsible for slitting conscious birds’ throats open, and scalding them while they’re still alive. They cut the beaks off of mother hens without pain killers and drug their chickens with antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise kill them. Please join our worldwide campaign against KFC by attending this protest.

Location:
KFC at 2072 Mass Ave (Rt. 2A) in Cambridge, MA

Food Not Bombs

12:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Food Not Bombs shares free vegetarian food with hungry people and protests war and poverty throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Food Not Bombs is organizing for an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.

We also support actions against the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people and the destruction of the earth.

Food Not Bombs is an all volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolence.

Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process.

Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in city parks to anyone without restriction.

The groups also serve free vegetarian meals at protests and other events.

Food Not Bombs works in coalition with groups like Earth First!, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Anarchist Black Cross, the IWW, Homes Not Jails, Anti Racist Action, In Defense of Animals, the Free Radio Movement and other organizations on the cutting edge of positive social change and resistance to the new global austerity program.

We hope you will join us in taking direct action towards creating a world free from domination, coercion and violence.

Bull Riding Protest

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Worcester Bull Riding Demonstration

Protest the "Worcester Classic" Professional Bull Riders Competition

January 8 at 6:50pm (show starts at 7:50)

This is a weather permitting event: in case of snow, rain, or very cold temperatures, check your email on Saturday morning for cancellation or call the cell phone number for info.

If you need a ride or can share a ride, please let us know asap.

WHY: These poor, naturally passive animals are tortured with electric shocks, bucking straps, skin irritants, sticks and more to become what the Centrum calls: "the most ferocious bucking bulls". They also say there is "a combined purse of more than $6 million returns for the 8th annual Worcester Classic" which really tells it all, doesn't it?

The flank or "bucking" strap is tightly cinched around their abdomens, where it pinches the groin and genitals, causing pain, which makes the animals buck. In addition, tacks are sometimes slipped under the bucking straps. Common injuries to the bulls include broken bones, huge bruises, and massive internal bleeding. A bull being ridden at the Calgary Stampede kicked so high that his leg became wedged in the chute gate. His leg was completely fractured above his fetlock, exposing the bone, and he had to be euthanized. Severely injured bulls are sent to slaughter and easily replaced.

In an account published in the Buffalo News, upstate resident Valerie Will reported, "I stood nearby as rodeo folk walked among the calm bulls. As show time neared, they tried to get one of the bulls into the area near the chute.

The bull resisted, scrunching into the corner.

His eyes teared, his nose ran and the bull urinated and defecated. He rotated his head as if searching for a way out. His eyes rolled."

And here's more of the hype put out by the Centrum: "When 3 million pounds of dirt, 90,000 pounds of steel and 160,000 pounds of bull are moved into the DCU Center, the true transformation guarantees to feature the major league of professional bull riding. The PBR World Challenge will showcase the top bull riders and world champions from the U.S., and include elite competitors from Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Australia." It is amazing to us that this occurs in MA and that there are so many MA cowboys and girls. Please help us say this event does not belong in MA.

"From Swastika to Jim Crow" & "Free Voice of Labor" Docs

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

A Tribute to Pacific Street Films

Childhood friends Steven Fischler and Joel Sucher founded Pacific Street Films in 1969 while studying under Martin Scorsese at NYU. While filming undercover agents who were suspected of showing up at protest rallies, Fischler and Sucher themselves were harassed, photographed, and arrested. This experience became the basis for their first documentary Red Squad, completed in 1971. Since then, they have directed and produced a series of non-fiction films known for illuminating and exploring modern American social history.

This program is co-presented with the Boston Jewish Film Festival.
Boston Jewish Film Festival members receive discounted admission when presenting their membership cards.

Directors in Person Saturday
Screening on January 8 (Saturday) 7 pm
January 9 (Sunday) 9 pm

From Swastika to Jim Crow

Directed by Lori Cheatle
US, 2000, b/w and color, 60 min.

In the 1930s, Jewish intellectuals who escaped Nazi Germany and emigrated to the U.S. faced an uncertain future. Confronted with anti-Semitism at American universities, as well as a public distrust of foreigners, many sought refuge in an unlikely place: traditionally black colleges in the segregated South. Securing teaching positions, these scholars came to form lasting relationships with their students, and made significant contributions to the communities in which they lived and worked. Based on Gabrielle Simon Edgcomb’s book of the same title, the film tells the little-known story of two very different cultures sharing a common burden of oppression. The scholars found new meaning and purpose in their adopted homeland, while their students, benefiting from the knowledge brought to them by these refugees, were able to go on to develop their own academic careers. The film also highlights the role of African Americans, like Ralph Bunche, in securing positions for these refugee scholars at places like Howard University, Tougaloo College, and Hampton Institute.

Free Voice of Labor: The Jewish Anarchists

Directed by Steven Fischler and Joel Sucher
US, 1980, b/w and color, 55 min.

Between 1900 and WWI, participants in the Jewish anarchist movement worked to build trade unions and organize schools, as well as to sponsor lectures, discussions, dances, and a wide range of cultural events. Using interviews with participants in the movement, archival photos and newsreel footage, excerpts from old motion pictures, and Yiddish songs and poems, this film paints a dramatic portrait of immigrant life in the U.S. as seen through the eyes of the sweatshop workers who made up the Jewish anarchist movement.

"Red Squad" & "Anarchism In America" Docs

9:30 PM - 11:30 PM

Directors in Person Friday
Screening on January 7 (Friday) 7 pm
January 8 (Saturday) 9:30 pm

Red Squad

Directed by Steven Fischler, Joel Sucher, Howard Blatt and Francis Freedland
US, 1972, b/w, 45 min.

This investigative (but frequently humorous) film documents the surveillance activities of the New York City Police Department's Bureau of Special Services, known as the Red Squad. The film pitted Fischler and Sucher against the forces of both the police and the FBI's surveillance units, which were ever-present at the many anti-war demonstrations in the early 1970s. While documenting events at a protest rally, the two filmmakers became the subject of police surveillance and eventually amassed a hefty FBI file.

Anarchism in America

Directed by Steven Fischler and Joel Sucher
US, 1982, color, 75 min.

A colorful and provocative survey of anarchism in America, the film attempts to dispel popular misconceptions and trace the historical development of the movement. The film explores the movement both as a native American philosophy stemming from 19th century American traditions of individualism, and as a foreign ideology brought to America by immigrants. The film features rare archival footage and interviews with significant personalities in anarchist history including Murray Boochkin and Karl Hess, and also live performance footage of the Dead Kennedys.

No ens sorpren quedar exclosos d´uns drets i llibertats que l´estat
