Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore Meeting
Join the Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore as it meets on Monday nights at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) building on York Road. The Pledge, formerly the Iraq Pledge of Resistance, regularly engages in civil disobedience on behalf of our collective civil liberties. Every action is non-violent and is conducted peacefully.
The Pledge has a series of actions planned in the upcoming months that are designed to visibly oppose the Bush administration's "preemptive" warmongering and attacks on the Bill of Rights. If you're concerned about the direction the US is heading to please consider coming out and joining us. (Note: it is always advisable to call in advance to confirm the meeting is being held as scheduled.)

Weapons of Mass Deception
"A comprehensive and devastating critique of the TV news networks' complacency and complicity in the war on Iraq... brilliantly argued and scrupulously documented...a must see" -- Chicago Reader.
Winner of the Best Documentary award at the Denver, Colorado and Austin, Texas film festivals. [Directed by Danny Schechter "The News Dissector"]
The screening is presented by Michael Hammerschlag, who has written commentaries + articles for Seattle Times, Providence Journal, Honolulu Advertiser, Columbia Journalism Review, Media Channel, and Capital Times. He will present a 15 minute introduction before the film and also take questions after.
This will immediately be followed by Jeff Knoch's Prog-O-Riff-ic film + video night.
8pm 70s Psych-Prog Film Night with your charming host Jeff Knoch
An evening of rare, archival footage (compiled from innumerable sources) of the finest English and German prog-rockers of bygone days: when cleverness, thinness, and musical direction governed by something other than adolescent testosterone were cool. Soft Machine, Kevin Ayers, and Caravan spar with teutonic titans: Can, Kraftwerk (in this case, more Neu than Kraftwerk), and Amon Duul II. Plus a handful of others. The sheer irrefutable mind-blowing potential of the material and consummately endearing personality of one Robert Wyatt more than makes up for the very rare, occasional, seldom discernable, yet arguably present, only slight compromised video quality (at moments).

HIJACKING CATASTROPHE: A Documentary
Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire (by Sut Jhally) examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home. The documentary places the Bush administration's false justifications for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neoconservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the cold war, and to expand American power globally by means of military force. At the same time, the documentary argues that the Bush administration has sold this radical and controversial plan for aggressive American military intervention by deliberately manipulating intelligence, political imagery, and the fears of the American people after 9/11.
Narrated by Julian Bond, Hijacking Catastrophe features interviews with more than twenty prominent political observers, including Pentagon whistleblower Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, who witnessed first-hand how the Bush administration set up a sophisticated propaganda operation to link the anxieties generated by 9/11 to a pre-existing foreign policy agenda that included a preemptive war on Iraq.
At its core, the film places the deceptions of the Bush administration within the larger frame of questions seldom posed in the mainstream: What, exactly, is the agenda that drove the administration's pre-war deceptions? How is 9/11 being used to sell this agenda? And what are the stakes for America, Americans, and the world if this agenda succeeds in being fully implemented during a second Bush term?
Professor Sut Jhally is Executive Director of the Media Education Foundation, Northhampton, MA.
