Howard Zinn - Reinventing Peace: Making it a Reality After 9/11

8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Dr. Zinn, Professor Emeritus of Boston University, is most widely known for his revolutionary work, A Peoples History of the United States 1492-Present which explains history from the perspective of the powerless and disenfranchised - a perspective often ignored in textbooks. He is regarded as a respected, insightful and acclaimed social critic and historian. In addition to his extensive commentary, he is an activist for positive change. After growing up in the immigrant slums of Brooklyn, NY he served in WWII and then went on to teach at the Spellman College, a historically black college, and finally at Boston University. He has also been at the forefront of the civil rights and anti-war movements.

In a nation still suffering the wounds of domestic attack, Howard Zinn believes America can preserve its existence through peaceful means. But what hope is there for peace in the future? Does America have a flawed understanding of the world and international relations? What can the leadership today do to curb future domestic attack? Is America on the right track, or are we following a policy of greater violence and lesser hope? With his great knowledge and strong beliefs, Howard Zinn is sure to make an impact for peace.

Cape Wind Farm Public Hearing

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Army Corps of Engineers will host public hearings to seek comments on the recently released Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Cape Wind offshore wind farm.

*Registration for the hearings begins one hour before the listed start time.

If you are unable to attend the hearings you can submit written comments to the Army Corps of Engineers by February 24, 2005. You can also submit more detailed written comments after testifying at a public hearing:

Karen Kirk Adams
Cape Wind Energy Project EIS Project Manager
Corps of Engineers, New England District
696 Virginia Road
Concord, MA 01742-2751
wind.energy (at) usace.army.mil

In 2001, Cape Wind Associates proposed to build a 130-turbine wind farm in federal waters in Nantucket Sound. It would be the first offshore wind farm in the U.S. and could generate enough renewable energy to meet 75% of Cape Cod's daily electricity needs - up to 454 megawatts of power. It would also be the region's first utility-scale renewable energy project.

The wind farm proposal has been undergoing a comprehensive environmental and public interest review. The review process is led by the Army Corps of Engineers, in consultation with 16 other federal and state resource agencies. The Army Corps recently released the 4,000-page Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project, kicking off a 105-day public comment period and announcing public hearings scheduled during the first two weeks of December. Written comments are due February 24, 2005. At the end of the comment period, the Army Corps will review and respond to comments, revisit the Draft EIS, and issue a Final EIS before deciding whether to issue a permit for the project.

"The Miami Model" at Radical Movie Night

7:00 PM - 12:00 AM

Radical Movie Night

Free Screening of 'The Miami Model'

In November, 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA threatens to devastate workers, the environment, and public services like health care, education, and water, and to destroy indigenous rights and cultural diversity across North, Central, and South America.

Collectively, Indymedia activists shot hundreds of hours of video footage documenting the FTAA protests in Miami. This footage has been edited by the FTAA Miami Video Working Group into a documentary that cuts through the mass media blackout to reveal the brutal repression and assault on civil liberties that took place, as well as the life-affirming and inspiring alternatives to capitalist globalization that were also in full effect in Miami.

Dumb Luck: The Art of Gary Baseman

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

DUMB LUCK
The Art of Gary Baseman
Wednesday, December 8
7pm FREE

Mucking up the pages of the New Yorker, the New York Times, Rolling
Stone, Forbes, the Atlantic Monthly, Blab, and more, Gary Baseman has
populated the finest publications with his inimitable brand of
illustration. Now Dumb Luck, presents the first complete collection of
his work, spanning more than ten years. According to Baseman himself,
his art inhabits “that muddy spot where the line between genius and
stupidity has been smudged beyond recognition.”

Dark and dopey, hokey and heartbreaking, his world is populated with
freaky folks, maimed bunnies, weird wiener dogs, and anthropomorphic
ice-cream cones that yearn and burn just like we do. Baseman’s
particular genius lies in capturing those ridiculous and all-too-often
appalling aspects of being human. Hilarious testimony to the mind of
its creator, Dumb Luck (published by Chronicle Books) is both an art
manifesto and a raw celebration of idiocy.

Booksigning and Talk with Author Starhawk and her new book: Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature.

7:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Starhawk, committed global justice activist and organizer, is the author or coauthor of ten books, including The Spiral Dance, The Fifth Sacred Thing, and the award-winning Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising. Her latest is Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature. She is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, is a highly influential voice in the revival of earth-based spirituality and Goddess religion, and has brought many innovative techniques of spirituality and magic to her political work. Her web site is www.starhawk.org.

Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. Her work in progressive movements spans over 35 years, beginning as an organizer in her high school during the days of the Vietnam War. In the years since, she has organized, trained protestors, and been on the front lines of antinuclear actions at Diablo Canyon, Livermore Weapons Lab, Vandenberg Air Force Base, and the Nevada Test Site, among others. She traveled to Nicaragua with Witness for Peace in 1984 and made two trips to El Salvador to give ongoing support for sustainability programs. For a number of years she has traveled to the Occupied Territories of Palestine and to Israel, working for peace with local activists of both sides. A main focus for the last several years has been the global justice movement; Starhawk has taken part in many of the major actions, including those in Seattle, Washington DC, Quebec City, Genoa, New York City, Cancun, Mexico, and Miami. She co-founded RANT, Root Activists' Network of Trainers (www.rant.org), and teaches non-violent direct action trainings for these demonstrations, as well as for groups throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Palestine, and South America.

She is active in the revived American peace movement, and contributes her time to countless environmental and land use issues. Together with Penny Livingston-Stark and Erik Ohlsen, she coteaches EAT, Earth Activist Training, intensive seminars that combine permaculture design, effective activism, and earth-based spirituality (www.earthactivisttraining.org).

Starhawk is perhaps best known as an articulate pioneer in the revival of earth-based spirituality and Goddess religion. Besides her inspiring, much-read books, she is a cofounder of Reclaiming, an activist branch of modern Pagan religion, and continues to work closely with the Reclaiming community (www.reclaiming.org). She consulted on and contributed to the popular trio of films known as the Women's Spirituality series (directed by Donna Read): Goddess Remembered, The Burning Times, and Full Circle. Starhawk and Donna Read recently formed their own film company, Belili Productions. Their first release is Signs Out of Time (2004), a documentary on the life of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, the scholar whose discoveries sparked the Goddess movement (www.belili.org). Starhawk and Donna are at work on their next film, an introduction to permaculture.

Starhawk has also recorded several tapes and CDs; the latest are "Wicca for Beginners" (2002) and "Wiccan Rituals and Blessings" (2003), both produced by Sounds True. A songwriter on occasion, quite a few of her songs and chants turn up in rituals across the globe; they are included in songbooks and hymnals, covered by other artists, and recorded by the Reclaiming musical community.
Starhawk travels internationally teaching magic, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism. She lives part-time San Francisco, in a collective house with her partner and friends, and part-time in a little hut in the woods in western Sonoma County, California, where she practices permaculture in her extensive gardens, and writes. Her website is www.starhawk.org.
---------------------------------

Starhawk is one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is also well-known as a global justice activist and organizer, whose work and writings have inspired many to action. She is the author or coauthor of ten books, including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess, long considered the essential text for the Neo-Pagan movement, and the now-classic ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing. Starhawk's newest book is The Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature.

Her works have been translated into German, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Japanese. Her essays are reprinted across the world, and have been included in numerous anthologies. Starhawk's writing is influential and has been quoted by hundreds of other authors, turning up in magazines, trade and academic press, and even inspirational calendars. Her books are often found in college curriculums. The Spiral Dance has been continuously in-print for over twenty-five years and revised twice; in 1999 HarperSanFrancisco published the Twentieth Anniversary Edition. Beacon, which has published three editions of Dreaming the Dark: Magic, Sex, and Politics, reports that the book remains a backlist bestseller. Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery won the Media Alliance Meritorious Achievement Award for nonfiction in 1988. Starhawk's first novel, The Fifth Sacred Thing, won the Lambda award for best Gay and Lesbian Science Fiction in 1994. Her second novel, Walking to Mercury, was published by Bantam in 1997. She cowrote The Pagan Book of Living and Dying, an anthology compiled by Reclaiming and M. Macha NightMare. Together with Anne Hill and Diane Baker, she cowrote Circle Round: Raising Children in the Goddess Tradition. In 2000 HarperSF published The Twelve Wild Swans: A Journey to the Realm of Magic, Healing, and Action, cowritten with Hilary Valentine. Many of Starhawk's best political essays--credited with helping the global justice movement find and define itself--were collected into her book Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising. At the Book Expo America, Webs of Power won a 2003 Nautilus Award from the trade association NAPRA.

Street Performer Weekly Gig with SAFE

6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SAFE (Society for Artistic Freedom and Expression) will have regular weekly Sing Outs on the Sidewalk in front of New Leaf Market 6pm every Wednesday evening.

SAFE calls for the restoration of the Voluntary Street Performers Guidelines and the end to onerous restrictions on peformers downtown.

One local Downtown Ordinance dictates the 10' forbidden zones limiting performers to less than 20% of downtown sidewalks. Another literally excludes them from narrower sidewalks in other business districts. Another is the "Move Along Law" which mandates criminal penalties for not "moving along" every hour.

Bring your instrument or just your ears. Bring a friend.

Hot soup by Joe Schultz.

Take back our public spaces from some creeping privatization, favored by a segment of the merchants.

We also share information on recent police and "host" harassment of performers.

Location:
In front of downtown New Leaf Market at Pacific and Lincoln Aves. between the Cafe Campesino and Alfresco's kiosks.

Cost: Free, but bring quarters and scraps to throw to performers!

Alliant’s corporate Headquarters, 5050 Lincoln Drive, Edina. Take Hwy 169 north or south toward Hopkins. Take the 5th St/Lincoln Dr. exit. Turn east one block.
