Baltimore Public Access Forum @ Red Emma's
This Friday (12/3) representatives from Baltimore Grassroots Media will appear at Red Emma's to discuss the importance of Public Access and the current struggle to preserve it for Baltimore. This forum comes at a crucial time. The Baltimore City Council is believed to be only days away from approving a new contract that will eliminate Baltimore Public Access by removing it's funding, allocating the local cable spectrum entirely to Comcast in the process.
Labor, peace and social justice activists (of all stripes) who are interested in learning what strategies are being utilized in order to preserve this vital outlet for community-based media are encouraged to attend this timely forum and participate in the discussion.
Public Access Forum (12/3) Agenda:

WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception. Inside the media war on Iraq.
Dec 3-7: This film will be there for 5 days. Show times still uncertain. We need to get an audience fast, so it will be extended!! It's a VERY good and important film.
This is an analysis of media coverage on Iraq by an insider. Did the US media wave the flag so the FCC would waive media ownership rules? How did and still does the Administration and Army shape the coverage? Did the Army deliberately open fire on the Palestine Hotel (full of independent journalists)? These and other issues are covered.
Please publicize. Would your organization like to adopt a showing & have a brief speaker afterwards?
Danny Schechter("your news dissector") has won Emmys working for ABC & NBC & 60 minutes -- also directed "Counting on Democracy" about Florida.
The film is winning awards & getting rave reviews (Boston Phoenix: "More cohesive and devastating than Fahrenheit 911"; Vanity Fair: "Something of a comic masterpiece" (!), Le Monde gave it a 4-page spread; it was the featured film o the "Films to See Before You Vote" festival.

Demonstration Against Force Feeding Ducks and Geese
Foie gras is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of very young ducks and geese. To make foie gras, workers shove long inflexible pipes down 8-10 week old ducks' and geese' throats and pump up to 7 pounds of food per day into their stomachs to enlarge their livers (called gavage feeding). This is the equivalent of eating 16 pounds of spaghetti for a human. On average, they are force-fed 20 to 30 percent of their body weight each day. This painful force-feeding is the general method used for all foie gras production. The force-fed birds become too sick to even walk because of the serious liver disease hepatic lipidosis. Vets say they must experience unspeakable pain.
Animals also suffer ruptured stomachs, throats, liver disease, foot infections, kidney necrosis, spleen and liver damage, bruised and broken bills, and tumor-like lumps in their necks. They are usually crammed into tiny, vomit-covered cages for this horror. At one Hudson Valley farm, so many ducks died when their stomachs burst, workers were given a bonus if they killed fewer than 50 birds a month. One duck had a maggot-infested neck wound so severe that water spilled out of it when he tried to drink. Birds have literally exploded from the force-feeding.
Only males are used for foie gras because they produce larger livers. Female hatchlings are drowned, beaten, or crushed to death.
Foie gras farms have been banned in the UK, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Israel (previously the 4th largest producer), Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. Many restaurants have banned it, including the San Francisco Hilton, Chicago's Pump Room and San Antonio's La Louisiane. United Airlines, Delta, Holland KLM, and Scandinavia's SAS have removed foie gras from their menus. The Boston Symphony dropped foie gras from their annual Wine & Food Event. Trader Joe's east and west coast stores have stopped selling it. State bills banning it have been introduced in both California and New York--the only US states that produce foie gras.
MARC sent a polite letter and pledge card for Clio's owners to sign agreeing to stop serving foie gras and a member also met with them in person but they never responded.
Please stand up for these incredibly abused animals.
Location:
Clio's in Back Bay, Boston. Clio's (part of the Eliot Hotel building) is located at 370 Commonwealth Avenue (Commonwealth and Mass Ave). The restaurant entrance is actually on Mass Ave.

TRAPESE Roadshow comes to Glasgow
The TRAPESE roadshow is coming to Glasgow! 7.30pm, Friday 3rd December, Woodside Halls, Glenfarg Street, G20. (For how to get there, see the end of this message).
Roll up for the flight of the TRAPESE, flying through the high ether of climate change, oil-war, the G8 and civil disobedience, crashing spectacularly to the ground with brief interactive workshops, a pubquiz, short films and music.
The roadshow is an evolving part of the "Educate the G8" collective.
We want to inform and mobilise people to take positive action around the issues behind the G8.
Renewable energies, popular education, alternative medias and grassroots participation are our thing. Oil fuelled profit crazy big Corp government, not.
