The Near-Term Future of Wireless Voice Services

4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Philip J. Fleming (Motorola Wireless Systems Group):
"The Near-Term Future of Wireless Voice Services"

HOSTED BY:
Andy Lippman, MIT Media Lab

SUMMARY:
Your cell phone will soon be capable of being a fully functioning end node in the Interneton par with your laptopand will support multiple wireless and wired interfaces such as 802.11, Bluetooth, USB and, of course, "cellular." This naturally leads one to wonder if applications that are currently associated with laptops could be moved to the cell phone. The question is particularly interesting for voice applications such as Voice-over-IP (e.g., Skype) because they enable peer-to-peer voice services and the hope of freeing us from the shackles of the telecom operators and their monthly bills. It may even lead to the standardization of the application programming interface on the cell phone.
This talk provides a glimpse into the future of cellular-style voice services focusing on Voice-over-IP (VoIP) over the new shared packet data channels that will be built out by cellular operators over the next few years. Fleming discusses why this is important and how progress toward using the cell phone as a device for running VoIP over 802.11 could lead to the convergence of the "new cellular" and 802.11. He ends with a discussion around the questions: What will be the future role of peer-to-peer wireless voice services? What are the outstanding issues around its adoption in the mass market? How can researchers contribute to this important nascent cultural shift?

BIO:
Philip J. Fleming is a fellow of the technical staff in the Network Advanced Technology organization, a part of the Wireless Systems Group at Motorola, Inc. He is also the Motorola resident scientist at the MIT Media Lab for the 2004-5 academic year. After receiving a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan, he spent a year as assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University before joining Bell Laboratories. In 1991, he joined Motorola and built a group that became a center for simulation and analysis of emerging cellular networking technologies. His most recent work is in the convergence of wireless network standards enabled by Voice-over-IP, 802.11, 802.16, and new cellular data networking standards such as 1X-DO and HSDPA. His research interests are focused on system issues in wireless communication networks and the stochastic modeling and simulation of computer/communication systems.

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin

7:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Bayard Rustin was one of history's bravest crusaders for racial justice. Rustin's commitment to pacifism and advocacy of nonviolence made him a pioneer in the 1940s. In 1963 Rustin organized the historic March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever witnessed. But Rustin was also seen as a political liability. He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s; as a result, he was frequently shunned by the very civil rights movement he helped create. The compelling film "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin" chronicles Rustin's complex life story, a tale of race, prejudice, and idealism at the heart of 20th century America.

Location:
Coolidge Corner Theatre

Cost: $7

Directions: By train: take the Green Line (C branch to Cleveland Circle) trolley from downtown to Coolidge Corner via Beacon Street. The Coolidge Corner stop is at Harvard Street, 5-10 minutes from Kenmore Square.

By bus: take bus #66, Dudley/Harvard Square.

All buses and trolleys stop at the Harvard Street/ Beacon Street intersection.
Both lines are also on the night owl route - operating until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday nights.

From Mass Pike, 90: Take exit 18 Allston/Brighton. As you exit tolls, stay to left for Allston exit and merge with Cambridge St. Follow until you reach Harvard Ave on your left, after the overpass at the intersection with the frightening "Captain Fishbones" sign. Take the left onto Harvard Ave and follow through Allston and across Commonwealth Ave, continuing for about 1.5 miles. Just before reaching the major intersection of Harvard and Beacon St, you will notice our giant theatre marquee on your right.

From Interstate 93: Take the Storrow Drive exit and follow to Storrow Drive (this navigation changes periodically because of Big Dig construction, so watch for the signs). Take Storrow Drive to the Kenmore Square exit. As the exit splits, stay in the right hand lane. Take the first right onto Beacon St. Follow Beacon St through Kenmore Square (past the legendary Citgo sign), staying in the center lane. After you cross the overpass, keep going straight ahead, following the trolley tracks along Beacon St until you reach the intersection of Beacon and Harvard St, landmarked by a large Tudor style building with a clocktower (and a Walgreens) on the corner. You'll see us one half block up Harvard, but continue on Beacon to Center St and turn right to access our parking lot behind the building.

From Route 9: Route 9 inbound to the Brookline Village/Harvard St intersection. The Brookline fire station is on your right. Go through the intersection and take a right immediately after the fire station, and loop around the back. You can now turn right and cross back over Route 9 onto Harvard St. Follow Harvard St through Brookline Village, about one mile to Beacon St. Cross Beacon St and you will immediately see our marquee on your left. Parking is along Beacon, or go around the block and enter the lot behind our building on Center St.

Street Performer Weekly Gig with SAFE

6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SAFE (Society for Artistic Freedom and Expression) will have regular weekly Sing Outs on the Sidewalk in front of New Leaf Market 6pm every Wednesday evening.

SAFE calls for the restoration of the Voluntary Street Performers Guidelines and the end to onerous restrictions on peformers downtown.

One local Downtown Ordinance dictates the 10' forbidden zones limiting performers to less than 20% of downtown sidewalks. Another literally excludes them from narrower sidewalks in other business districts. Another is the "Move Along Law" which mandates criminal penalties for not "moving along" every hour.

Bring your instrument or just your ears. Bring a friend.

Hot soup by Joe Schultz.

Take back our public spaces from some creeping privatization, favored by a segment of the merchants.

We also share information on recent police and "host" harassment of performers.

Location:
In front of downtown New Leaf Market at Pacific and Lincoln Aves. between the Cafe Campesino and Alfresco's kiosks.

Cost: Free, but bring quarters and scraps to throw to performers!

Public Forum on Living in a Reactor Community

6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

For those interested in the social, environmental and health issues surrounding nuclear energy (and in the eventual shut-down of the VT Yankee nuclear reactor), come join neighbors to share concerns about the nearby VT Yankee nuclear reactor proposed "uprate." Situated just nine miles from the center of Gill, the Entergy Corporation intends to increase the risks to our health and safety in order to increase its profits by running the VT Yankee nuclear reactor at 120% of its design capacity before its license runs out in 2012 and its spent fuel pool fills up in 2008. There will be opportunities to ask questions, get answers, and join the efforts of many concerned citizens who are participating in the regulatory process for the safety of our children, our families and our homes.

See the video "Fatal Fall-Out," an award-winning documentary which features nuclear physicists and medical professionals describing the actual health risks of "low-level radiation" released into the air by commercial nuclear reactors such as VT Yankee. The risks of ingested or inhaled alpha or beta particles (such as those emitted by radioactive Strontium, Iodine, and Cesium, routinely released into the air or water by operating nuclear reactors) have been long downplayed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the nuclear industry. Instead, risk assessment by the NRC has used a model of whole body irradiation based on flawed studies of the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

According to Raymond Shadis (an expert on nuclear power generation who is staff advisor to the New England Coalition, in his testimony before the VT State Nuclear Advisory Panel), the 20% uprate of the VT Yankee Reactor will:

increase the likelihood of a nuclear accident
increase the consequences of a major accident by 30-40%
increase routine radiation releases to public space by 20-30%
increase high-level waste production over the life of the reactor by 20%

NRC Exit Interview Cancelled

The NRC planned, then cancelled, a public "exit meeting" November 9th with Entergy at which they were to present the findings of the scaled-down engineering assessment at VT Yankee and their review of the lost fuel rods fiasco. Due to pressure from the press and public officials in VT, the NRC will hold an exit meeting during which the public will be allowed to comment, at a time and place to be announced.

In the meantime, we have an opportunity to get informed and plan responsible action as we await the NRC meeting. Please help spread the word, and join us if you can.

Location:
Gill Town Hall, Main Road in Gill

Cost: none
