Parents Opposed To fines associated with your child having a few tardys @ public school

All day

Need to have a group meeting STAT regarding the challenge and opposition of the Fayetteville School Districts charge with administering Attendance Laws.
I am strongly opposed to the threatening letters I have recieved from my Kidnergardners school Princapal stating that if he were late again I would be turned over to the prosecuting attourney! If my kid is sick or is running a few min. late in the morning because he peed the bed and has to take a shower thats our freakin buisness!!! I shouldnt have to justify this to anyone. If you feel this is an outrage that the government will try to prosecute & fine you for being a like maybe 10 min late please contact me. I am willing to petition, lobby, protest and do whatever it takes to try to eradicate this and have this "compulsory school attendance law" changed or done away with completely! But I cant do it as effectively alone. The government has nor the right reason or virtue to threaten parents and try to control us through our children. If I could afford it, my baby would be in private or homeschooling but thats not possible financially. Be proactive with me!! contact me to help me form a group. tinkerbell-AT-disinfo.net

Location:
Just contact me for now if interested in forming a group
to get our game plan together. I would like to meet probably thursday evenings.

Cost: Freedome

Directions: I will probably have the meetings @ wilson park in fayetteville on thursday evenings for now. I need people to help me research and coordinate a gameplan.

Emergency Protest - Say No! Resist the War!

5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Emergency Protest - Say No! Resist the War!
Stop the U.S. Massacre in Fallujah!
Money for Jobs, Education, and Health Care - Not War
Bring the Troops Home Now!

Right now, the Pentagon has launched a full-scale massacre in Fallujah, to be followed by a campaign to subdue Iraq, crush the risistance, and install its Abu Ghraib-style occupation.

We have an obligation to respond with great urgency and a renewed commitment to stopping the war. Many looked to the election for answers, but it is clear that only the people can stop the war. We must begin planning now for a new phase of resistance.

The All Peoples Congress calls on everyone - community, trade union, student and peace activists to come out and say no. Now is the time for unity - to resist the war!

BREAD AND PUPPET

All day

Bread & Puppet is Here!!!
The most wonderful participatory artistic experience in the entire universe beckons you.

BREAD AND PUPPET THEATER'S
FIRST WORLD INSURRECTION IN CAMBRIDGE

A POST-ELECTION RUCKUS PLAYED OUT FROM NOVEMBER 4-21

(Cambridge, MA) The Bread and Puppet Theater presents the First World Insurrection, a post-election ruckus played out in Cambridge, November 4-21. Performances and Symposium held at the Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre / Durrell Hall, 820 Massachusetts Avenue, Central Square, and Art Exhibit installed at the Marran Gallery, Lesley University, Main Quad on Mellen St. (off Mass. Ave.), between Harvard and Porter Squares. Both venues are wheelchair accessible. For advance tickets, on sale from October 18th on, and information on all events call the Cambridge Family
YMCA (www.cambymca.org) at 617-661-9622, extension 706.

Artistic Director Peter Schumann and his band of eight Vermont puppeteers will join forces with 20 local puppeteers and the Cambridge-based Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band. Their residency in Cambridge includes three puppet shows (a double-bill geared towards adults and one "family-friendly" show), a "Now What" political art symposium, and an exhibit showcasing Schumann's visual artwork. Each of these opportunities will include the traditional serving of Schumann's famous sourdough rye bread (baked in a temporary outdoor oven in the YMCA parking lot), drizzled with garlic-laden aioli, and the sale of the theater's "cheap art." In November, the city of Cambridge will indeed be the stage upon which much artistic discontent is set - with a few laughs thrown in!

Double Bill of Evening Shows:
WORLD ON FIRE and HOW TO TURN DISTRESS INTO SUCCESS: a Parable of War and Its Making November 4-14, Thurs.-Sun., 8pm (first week); Wed.-Sun., 8pm (second week) $10 general admission for both shows [groups of 10 or more $8]; held at the Cambridge Family YMCA

Family-Friendly Matinees:
UPSIDE DOWN WORLD CIRCUS
November 6-14, Sat.-Sun., 3pm
$10 / $5 students and seniors / children 2 and under free; held at the Cambridge Family YMCA

Political Art Symposium:
NOW WHAT?
2D ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM ON SUBVERSIVE PAPIER-MACHE & OTHER TOOLS FOR CREATIVE DISSENT
Monday, November 8, 7pm
including panelists Peter Schumann (Director, Bread and Puppet Theater), Gip Hoppe (Co-Artistic Director, WHAT), Reverend Billy (performance artist) and Reno (performance artist) moderated by Dr. John Bell (Puppet Historian, Emerson College professor and author of Puppets, Masks and Performing Objects) suggested donation $5; held at the Cambridge Family YMCA

Peter Schumann's Visual Art Installation:
THE U.S. SENATE READS AN EMAIL BY THE LATE RACHEL CORRIE TO HER PARENTS
November 9-21, gallery hours, 9am-8 pm daily; opening reception and artist's talk, Tuesday, November 9, 4-7pm free and open to all; held at the Marran Gallery, Lesley University

Featuring the Bread and Puppet Theater's signature masked characters and giant papier-mache puppets, the individual shows and art exhibit are described below.

WORLD ON FIRE
A group of National Emergency Clowns demonstrates official reactions to the ultimate emergency. The music is by the Asymmetric Prisoner-of-War Orchestra, consisting of local volunteer performers, and their conductor, the Fire Chief.
HOW TO TURN DISTRESS INTO SUCCESS: A Parable of War and Its Making
With the help of the National More-More-More Society, the Student of Success is taught a lesson: how the transformation of distress into success transforms success. The Population is a child in the arms of Truth. But Truth gets employed by the Executive to ready the Population for war. War is learned in a butcher's shop. The dance of the Collateral Damage Dancers concludes the lesson. The puppets are from cardboard; the music is live and includes an ancient Georgian chant.
UPSIDE DOWN WORLD CIRCUS
The circus features upside-down figures, a group of First World representatives trained by a lion, Thomas Jefferson and his patriotic cheerleaders, Gerrard Winstanley and his band of Diggers, the Rotten Idea Theater Company's distillation of political issues and much more, all accompanied by the B&P Circus Band. Political fun for the whole family!
THE U.S. SENATE READS AN EMAIL BY THE LATE RACHEL CORRIE TO HER PARENTS
Peter Schumann dedicates this installation to Rachel Corrie who died at the age of 23 in Palestine in 2003 as she tried to stop a bulldozer from destroying a Palestinian home. Her email is dated February 27, 2003.

(Background of the theater) The Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 on New York City's Lower Eastside by 70-year old Silesian-born sculptor and choreographer, Peter Schumann. In 1969 a nine-month tour of Europe won recognition and critical acclaim for Bread and Puppet. In 1970, the Theater moved to Vermont as theater-in-residence at Goddard College, letting itself be influenced by living in the countryside. Four years later the Theater moved to a farm in Glover in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where a 100-year-old hay barn was transformed into a museum for veteran puppets. Bread and Puppet Theater does massive spectacles in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. Their pageants have a broad theme-oriented appeal to large non-elite audiences. They address social, political and environmental issues or simply the common urgencies of our lives. Some of the awards received by Peter Schumann and Bread and Puppet are the Obie Award, the Erasmus Award from Amsterdam, the Vermont Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, UNIMA-USA's Citation of Excellence and the Puppeteers of America President's Award. Bread and Puppet is one of the oldest non-profit, self-supporting theater companies in the United States. Public Hearing at Fanueil Hall about B.U.'s Bioterrorism Lab

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Coalition received the DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (DEIS) for the lab. The DEIS is required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) prepared the DEIS because it is funding the lab through one of its institutes, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). As you might have guessed, NIH has decided in the DEIS that it should go ahead and fund the BU lab.

NIH will hold a public hearing on November 10 on the DEIS.  Before then, we will send out a summary of the DEIS and suggestions for the November 10 public hearing.

If you want a copy of the DEIS, call Susan St. Pierre at Ft. Point Associates (BU's consultant) at 617-357-7044 and ask for a copy of the DEIS for the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (the federal government's fancy name for the lab).  If Ms. Pierre is not in, ask the office manager at Ft. Point Associates for a copy of the DEIS.

(This process is different from the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) process.  As you may remember written comments to the MEPA office are due November 8. We will send out suggested comments early next week so you have time to mail in your own comments by November 5.)

Harlan County, U.S.A.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

This film documents the coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine
of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky in June, 1973.
Eastovers refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the
United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike, which lasted more
than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company
thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive women-folk.
Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us
some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history
of the UMWA.

The Media and The Election

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

In 2000 the media were criticized for prematurely calling
the presidential election. Admitting that they could have
better fulfilled their responsibilities, major newspapers and
television news organizations vowed to improve their performance
in 2004. How have they done? What is the appropriate role for the
news media in a 21st century democracy? What rights and privileges
should the fourth estate have? To whom are they beholden?
And what do they owe shareholders, citizens, and the profession
of journalism?
Mark Jurkowitz currently writes as the first full-time media
reporter for the Boston Globe, where he had previously served as
ombudsman. He is also a regular Friday Beat the Press panelist
for Channel 2's Greater Boston news magazine with Emily Rooney.
A graduate of Boston University's College of Communication, he has
been an astute observer the intersection between the press and
politics for almost 30 years. He has been an instructor of media
ethics at Northeastern and Tufts Universities. Jurkowitz has also
worked as a talk radio host and for two years, he was a public
affairs commentator for Monitor Radio.

Vets for Peace Meeting in Pensacola

PLEASE pass this on to anyone you think may be interested. Thank you!

VETERANS FOR PEACE

What: Veterans for Peace Meeting in Pensacola
When: Wednesday November 10th at 7pm
Where: 1420 E. Bobe St. (corner 15th and Bobe in East Hill. (Bobe is at south edge of baseball field on 12th Av., 2 blocks north of J's Bakery)

________________________________________________________

VETERANS FOR PEACE IN PENSACOLA

I know we're all smarting from the elections, but as the old adage goes "Don't Mourn. Organize!" Now that the elections are over and we're stuck with another four years of these warmongers, we need to take our frustration over the election and do something positive with it. Something that could really affect the community and help change the world.

To cut to the chase, a few of us are interested in starting a Vets for Peace chapter here in Pensacola. But we need help.

Contrary to popular myth, veterans have a very long history of speaking out against wars. In fact, many argue that the veteran has a specific duty to speak out against war. As the war in Iraq drags on and on, and more and more people are dying on all sides, now is not the time for us to be paralyzed by the bad news of the elections. We have to organize and we have to act.

I myself am an 9 year veteran of the US Navy/USMC and have been active in the anti-war movement here since days of getting out of the military. After 9/11, and especially since the neo-cons started started beating the drums of war, I have become very aware of the power that our veteran status has in the arguments concerning war and militarism in general. While many of the people active in the local anti-war community are former members of the armed forces, we haven't gotten together along those lines. Maybe we were hoping that the war would be shorter than it has been. It's sad enough that it happened in the first place and all of our protests weren't strong enough to stop it. It's even sadder that it has gone on as long as it has. Over 1,100 Americans will never see their families again. And who knows how many Iraqis have died? 10,000? 35,000? 100,000? One is too many, American or Iraqi. The war isn't going away. It's only getting worse.

This madness has to end.

That's why a few of us are working to start a Veterans for Peace chapter in Pensacola. I know that there are a lot of vets in this area, and I know a lot of us were teed off at the wars and militarism of the last few years. Pensacola might be a conservative town in a lot of ways, but there are a lot more of "us" here than we give ourselves credit for.

As vets, we have a voice that people will listen to. A voice that people HAVE to listen to. Many of us have seen the horrors of war first-hand. Many of us have seen what a war can do to those who are directly affected by them. And many of us have spoken out against war, whether it's Iraq or Vietnam. We can have an impact. But we need to get together and we need to do it soon. The world can't wait much longer.

Veterans for Peace is open to all vets and supporters who agree with the "Statement of Purpose" that I've placed below.

What is Veterans for Peace? Basically, Veterans for Peace is an educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war.

There are dozens of chapters across the country and several here in Florida. There is no reason Pensacola shouldn't have one.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others

(a) Toward increasing public awareness of the costs of war.
(b) To restrain our government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations
(c) To end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons
(d) To seek justice for veterans and victims of war
(e) To abolish war as an instrument of national policy.

To achieve these goals, members of Veterans For Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.

We urge all people who share this vision to join us.

If you're interested, please join us at Hallie Joyce's house for a video and conversation where we can talk about getting together as vets and community activists to help end this war and all the other ones. We'll have some food there, too. Feel free to bring a dish. This is serious stuff we're dealing with, but there's no reason we can't eat too.

I hope that you can make it Wednesday and I hope that you'll want to get involved.

Sincerely,
Scott Satterwhite

Street Performer Weekly Gig with SAFE

6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SAFE (Society for Artistic Freedom and Expression) will have regular weekly Sing Outs on the Sidewalk in front of New Leaf Market 6pm every Wednesday evening.

SAFE calls for the restoration of the Voluntary Street Performers Guidelines and the end to onerous restrictions on peformers downtown.

One local Downtown Ordinance dictates the 10' forbidden zones limiting performers to less than 20% of downtown sidewalks. Another literally excludes them from narrower sidewalks in other business districts. Another is the "Move Along Law" which mandates criminal penalties for not "moving along" every hour.

Bring your instrument or just your ears. Bring a friend.

Hot soup by Joe Schultz.

Take back our public spaces from some creeping privatization, favored by a segment of the merchants.

We also share information on recent police and "host" harassment of performers.

Location:
In front of downtown New Leaf Market at Pacific and Lincoln Aves. between the Cafe Campesino and Alfresco's kiosks.

Cost: Free, but bring quarters and scraps to throw to performers!

Vanderbilt Living Wage Rally!

11:30 AM - 1:30 PM

LET'S SHOW THE VANDERBILT ADMINISTRATION THE IMPORTANCE OF ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR WORKERS!

In the next week and a half, Vanderbilt and Laborers
International Union of North America (LIUNA) will be
renegotiating the union contract for the lowest paid
workers at Vanderbilt...Food Service Workers,
Custodians, Groundskeepers, etc. These employees have
not had a base wage raise in at least 8 years and most
are currently making $6.50/hour. Many of these workers
live on food stamps and have to work multiple jobs
because of our incredibly low wages.

Living Income for Vanderbilt Employees (LIVE) has been
working toward economic justice for Vanderbilt workers
since the spring of 2002 and this will be the first
contract negotiation in the group's existence.

The rallies on both Wednesday, November 10 and
Saturday, November 13 will be held in support of a living wage at Vanderbilt, and will show the Vanderbilt Community’s
support for its workers in this week’s negotiations.

Students, faculty, and staff will all
speak about a living wage and the union’s current
proposal.

AlliantACTION Vigil

7:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Ninth year of a weekly vigil outside international war merchant Alliant Techsystem's corporate headquarters. Although we are opposed to specific weapon systems produced by ATK, our main concern is the violent solutions this Minnesota based company represents to complex world problems. We ask who profits and who dies?

Location:
Alliant’s corporate Headquarters, 5050 Lincoln Drive, Edina. Take Hwy 169 north or south toward Hopkins. Take the 5th St/Lincoln Dr. exit. Turn east one block.

Networking continues at breakfast for those interested following the vigil.
