"Night of a Thousand Dinners" Cocktail Party

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Young Professionals for International Cooperation - Greater Boston
Invites you to our annual

"Night of a Thousand Dinners" Cocktail Party
A fundraiser to clear landmines worldwide!

Suggested Donation: $10 per person

Appetizers will be served
Cash Bar will be available

Raffle Prizes from John Harvard's, Starbucks, Teatro Restaurant and Adopt-A-Minefield!

Night of a Thousand Dinners (N1KD) is an opportunity for people all over the world to come together on a single night, enjoy some good food and drinks and help solve the global landmine crisis. Landmines are indiscriminate weapons of war. Beyond maiming and killing tens of thousands of individuals each year, one third of them children, landmines prevent reconstruction in postwar societies. They hinder the development of farms, roads, schools, and other necessary infrastructure, preventing communities from becoming economically self-sufficient. This year's N1KD will focus Iraq, as well as Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia and Mozambique. Join us for a presentation on landmines and a short film starring Heather Mill McCartney, interviewing landmine victims.

Proceeds from this event will be used to support Adopt-A-Minefield's mine clearance and survivor assistance programs. Adopt-A-Minefield is a program of the United Nations Association of the USA.

Location:
Freedom Trail Room
Union Oyster House
41 Union Street
Downtown Boston

Cost: $10

Directions: By MBTA Subway

There are two options:

Take the Blue or the Green Line to Government Center. Walk down the stairs along the side of City Hall and cross Congress Street. We are across the street, you will see the large sign on our building, and note we are across from the New England Holocaust Memorial (six tall glass spires).

Or, take the Orange or Green Line to Haymarket, walk left on Congress Street, left on Hanover Street, and right onto Union Street.

From the North (Routes 1, 95, 93)

Follow 93 South and take Exit 24, Callahan Tunnel.
At bottom of exit ramp turn right onto North Street.
On your right will be the Bostonian Hotel … go past the Bostonian Hotel, and take a right at the corner where you will see a McDonald’s.
This right is Union Street. We are on the right, halfway down, at 41 Union Street.

From the South (Routes 3, 95 , 93)

Follow 93 North through the South Station Tunnel, to Exit 23 — Government Center.
The exit ramp takes you out of the tunnel and you will see signs for Faneuil Hall.
At the first light you come to take the left towards Faneuil Hall, and you will now be on North Street.
Take your first right (see McDonald’s on the corner) which is Union Street.
The Union Oyster House is about 100 yards on the right.

From the West (Massachusetts Turnpike/Route 90)

Take Route 90 (Mass. Pike) East to Exit 24B Route 93 North.

Union Oyster House Validates Parking for the Parcel #7 Garage. Note that it is not clearly labeled as such (sorry). If the Union Oyster House is on your right, the brick building STRAIGHT AHEAD OF YOU is the garage. Drive towards it, make a quick left (Hanover St.) right (Congress St.) and right again (Sudbury St.) … in other words, around the brick building to the other side is the entrance. The fee after validation is $1.00 for the first 2 hours, and $3.00 for up to three hours. If you are parked there for even a minute after the three hours, the fee goes way up to the maximum, so double check your time stamp!

Support at asylum Court hearing

9:30 AM - 11:00 AM

In December 2002 with much fanfare, several Algerian men were arrested on terrorism charges in Edinburgh, allegedly for plotting an attack on the Hogmanay celebrations. All the men were innocent, the evidence amounted to a scribbled on tourist map, and now they face deportation.

An asylum application by one of the men, Fouad Lasnami, will be heard on Wednesday 3rd November. Experience has shown that public and press attendance at the hearings can make a difference.

If you wish to show your support, please assemble outside the court at 9:30am.

People wishing to travel from Edinburgh should call 07719822164 for travel info and those in Glasgow can call 07870286632

Location:
Immigration Court, Eagle Building, 215 Bothwell Street, Glasgow.

Street Performer Weekly Gig with SAFE

6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

SAFE (Society for Artistic Freedom and Expression) will have regular weekly Sing Outs on the Sidewalk in front of New Leaf Market 6pm every Wednesday evening.

SAFE calls for the restoration of the Voluntary Street Performers Guidelines and the end to onerous restrictions on peformers downtown.

One local Downtown Ordinance dictates the 10' forbidden zones limiting performers to less than 20% of downtown sidewalks. Another literally excludes them from narrower sidewalks in other business districts. Another is the "Move Along Law" which mandates criminal penalties for not "moving along" every hour.

Bring your instrument or just your ears. Bring a friend.

Hot soup by Joe Schultz.

Take back our public spaces from some creeping privatization, favored by a segment of the merchants.

We also share information on recent police and "host" harassment of performers.

Location:
In front of downtown New Leaf Market at Pacific and Lincoln Aves. between the Cafe Campesino and Alfresco's kiosks.

Cost: Free, but bring quarters and scraps to throw to performers!

Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace - Post-Election Potluck

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

We postponed our October potluck by one week so we can gather after the election to talk about the results, recover from our campaigning, voter registration, and get-out-the vote efforts, and discuss what we may want to do next. We're planning to be tired, so this potluck may actually involve take-out. But desserts, wine, and other treats and beverages are always welcome at MP social events!

Join us! Please e-mail us at info-AT-mppeace.org or call Krista at 651-641-7592 for the location of our special post-election potluck. And join us for our regular meetings starting next Wednesday at 7:00 in the Community Room in the basement of St. Mark's Catholic Church.

Location:
To be announced. Please e-mail us at info@mppeace.org or call Krista at 651-641-7592 for details.

Cost: Bring money to chip in for take-out Thai food, or a dessert or beverage to share.
