CAFTA- The Trojan Calf
**Please forward**
Dear friends,
Never thought international trade laws would make you laugh? Check this out:
www.quixote.org/calf
It's a biting, two-minute movie called "CAFTA -- The Trojan Calf." Its
message -- that the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has been
presented to Central America as a gift, but like the Trojan Horse, it's
really a vehicle for American corporations to secretly invade new markets.
It's an important story that will keep you smiling, and hopefully inspire
you to action. (Make sure you watch for the kicker at the end!)
After watching the movie you can join with thousands of others in
rejecting CAFTA by signing a full-page ad to appear in the NY Times the
first of June. Congress may vote on the agreement as early as July.
We hope you like the movie, and we encourage you to pass it along to your
family and friends.

Currently, the Bush and Uribe administration are working to garner support in congress for the renewal of Plan Colombia, the controversial initiative that has made Colombia the 3rd largest recipient of U.S. military aid in the world. On May 6th at UC Santa Cruz the event entitled “Colombia: Negotiating violence and building peace in everyday life” will present an alternative picture of everyday responses to the ongoing and intractable Colombian conflict functioning outside of Plan Colombia. This is a bilingual, multimedia event promoting political awareness and calling students to action through policy advocacy at this critical political juncture. Students, faculty and staff at UC Santa Cruz, and community members are invited to an informative event that will explore themes including (1) art and culture, (2) struggles for territorial control and ethnic territories, (3) transnational organizing and policy advocacy, and (4) race, class, gender and sustainable development, as intersecting vehicles of resistance.
The event will also include a screening of Bocas de Ceniza [Mouths of Ash], 2003, by Juan Manuel Echavarría;
As well as the following five speakers:
Sara Ramirez, Research Consultant, Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), GMU, Fairfax, VA

Sandra Alvarez, Colombian Activist, San Francisco

UCSC Budget Forum: How Cuts Harm Staff, Students, Faculty and Community
May 6th, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00, refreshments will be served)
UCSC Budget Forum: Sharing our Stories: How UCSC Budget Cuts Harm Staff, Students, Faculty and Community
UCSC Campus, College 8, room 240
UCSC is cutting academic and outreach programs and implementing substantial layoffs, which will dramatically undermine the University's mission. Meanwhile, top administrators receive salary increases that exceed the total salaries of multiple full-time UCSC employees.
Please note: These choices by UC administrators will have a huge impact throughout Santa Cruz County. For example, UCSC is planning to streamline buying of supplies of all kinds on campus and is setting up accounts with large national corporations, which will undoubtedly affect the local businesses UCSC has traditionally done business with. These cuts will also lead to hikes in unemployment rates in the county, as the UCSC employees who are facing lay-offs are mostly residents of this county.

The Fourth World War
a big noise film
From the front-lines of conflicts in Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Palestine, Korea, 'the North' from Seattle to Genova, and the 'War on Terror' in New York, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
It is the story of men and women around the world who resist being annihilated in this war.
While our airwaves are crowded with talk of a new world war, narrated by generals and filmed from the noses of bombs, the human story of this global conflict remains untold. "The Fourth World War" brings together the images and voices of the war on the ground. It is a story of a war without end and of those who resist.
The product of over two years of filming on the inside of movements on five continents, "The Fourth World War" is a film that would have been unimaginable at any other moment in history. Directed by the makers of "This Is What Democracy Looks Like" and "Zapatista", produced through a global network of independent media and activist groups, it is a truly global film from our global movement.

"National Day of Prayer" counter rally
A counter rally for those who think that the goverment should stay out of religion. The fundamentalist religious fanatics have been getting increasingly agressive with their intimidation and threats of violence. Let's have a big showing to demonstrate that being a good Citizen is not synonymous with being a good, god-fearing, bible-thumping, born-again Christian.
Note: the NDAP national website has not updated their information to include the big event at the State Capitol yet. The main event is the "prayer" itself at Noon and there is usually one or two hours of programming beforehand.
