Police Tactics & Resistance: The Miami Model

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Police Tactics & Resistance: The Miami Model
Speaker: Mike McGuire
Friday, April 9 at 7 pm

In November 2003, Miami was host to the most recent Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) ministerial, an agreement that sought to extend the provisions of NAFTA to all of Latin America. Organized labor, progressive NGO's and environmental, community and social justice groups from all over the country traveled to Miami to protest the proposed agreement. Miami police and officials created an environment that was very hostile to our freedoms of expression, assembly, speech and petition. Indeed, Miami became a police state where our rights were trampled upon. Miami Mayor Manny Diaz referred to FTAA security as a model for homeland security across the country. This multimedia workshop will address the Miami security model as well as the activist model employed there.

Mike McGuire is a long time Latin America solidarity, labor and global justice activist. He participated in the mobilization in Seattle against the WTO and most of the major global justice mobilizations since. Additionally, he helped with the mobilizations in Cancun against the WTO and, of course, Miami against the FTAA.

II Trobada d'Estudiants dels Països Catalans

All day

Emergency protest on Iraq

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Emergency Protest
End the Occupation of Iraq -
Bring the Troops Home Now!

Friday, April 9
4:30PM
Federal Courts Building
4th Street & 3rd Ave.
Minneapolis

IRAQ AT THE BOILING POINT

Friday protest in Minneapolis will be part of a
nationally coordinated anti-war response to current events in Iraq.

An emergency protest has been called for Friday, April 9 by Twin Cities area anti-war organizations to speak out against the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The event is part of a nationally coordinated response being carried out this weekend in cities across the United States in response to the events in Iraq.

The Minneapolis protest will be held on Friday, April 9 at 4:30 pm at the Minneapolis Federal Courthouse, 4th Street and 3rd Ave. in downtown Minneapolis. The protest will include banners and picketing as well as brief statements from representatives of some of the sponsoring organizations.

A statement issued by organizers says in part, "The revolt sweeping Iraq in opposition to the U.S.-led occupation has resulted in the White House and Pentagon ordering an escalation of U.S. military action in Iraq. Hundreds of Iraqis have been killed. A large number of U.S. troops have also died. There is no let up in sight. The message is clear: the Iraqi people want the U.S. occupation to end."

The statement continues, "the U.S. war in Iraq was never about terrorism, weapons of mass destruction or democracy. The war was fought for control of the resources of the region. The Iraqi people want to regain control. They have the right to self-determination without foreign interference."

The Minneapolis protest is being organized under the call of "End the Occupation of Iraq - Bring the Troops Home Now."

Among the organizations that have joined in sponsoring the protest are Anti-War Committee, Iraq Peace Action Coalition, Pax Christi (Twin Cities), St. Joan of Arc WAMM/Peacemakers, Twin Cities Peace Campaign/Focus on Iraq, Veterans for Peace (Chapter 27), Women Against Military Madness and Womens Political Alliance.

From Friday April 9 through Monday April 12, demonstrations will be held in cities and towns through across the U.S. In addition to Minneapolis, protests are planned in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities. The call for the weekend events was initiated by the International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition.

For more information on the Minneapolis event call Anti-War Committee 612 379-3899, Twin Cities Peace Campaign/Focus on Iraq 612 522-1861 or Women Against Military Madness 612 827-5364.
