Counter Recruitment Workshop
The Orange County Recruitment Awareness Project (OC-RAP) is proud to present the first ever regional activist workshop for the counter-military recruitment cause (C-R). Like groups up and down California, we are working to uncover and eradicate militarism in our public schools where our children go to learn and grow. Our work is especially important in light of the on-going U.S. occupation of Iraq.
Please post to appropriate listservs by copying-and-pasting the text at the end of this email. Forward to any free-agent activists you know who'd be interested in learning more about the C-R cause, what it means for today's peace movement, and how to get involved.
Note that we require advance registration. When you rsvp, please include the following: name, email, phone, organization you're affiliated with, and no. of persons attending. Once we receive your reservation, we will reply with a map, parking information, and any other instructions to make your time with us well-spent!
Last but not least, let us know if your organization would be interested in tabling at our all-day event. Due to limited space, we will invite those organizations that are pro-student and C-R related, e.g. pro-peace, anti-war.
With your help & participation, our regional training in counter-recruitment is going to be successful and have positive far-ranging effects for our children & our Orange County communities. Let's demilitarize our schools and give our students the tools to live long & prosper!
Respectfully yours,
Shannon Anderson

ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO
ATTEND. PLEASE RESERVE YOUR SPACE &
FREE LUNCH BY FRIDAY JULY 13 !!!
The military is using our schools to propagandize
young people and recruit them to invade and occupy
other countries. As the fighting goes on, our schools
and culture become more militarized, low-income
communities suffer, and money for education
disappears.
We've had enough! ¡Ya no!
What the workshop will include: an orientation on existing
activities and information needed to work effectively against
military recruiting and the militarization of schools.
Who should attend: high school students, college students,
teachers, parents, others who want to counter military
recruiting and resist militarism in our schools.
Organizations collaborating to present this workshop:
Project Yano (Youth & Non-Military Opportunities)
,
El Centro Cultural de Mexico, Coalition to End Militarism
in our Schools (CAMS), Women For OC, Orange County Friends,
OC Peace Coalition, Interfaith Peace Ministry of Orange County,

Radical History Reading Circle - Summer FreeSkool!
Hi!
Interested in reading some good books and discussing them? You may have heard about the Ithaca Freeskool by now - it is a non-heierarchial, peer-to-peer (mostly adult oriented) learning environment for skill shares, projects, classes and discussion groups. This summer is our second term, and we have a great set of free classes for the community.
As part of the freeskool, we are beginning a Tuesday evening reading/discussion circle looking mostly at radical
history…the plan is to start with readings from Emma Goldman's
Anarchism and Other Essays, followed by parts of Howard Zinn's
(howardzinn.org) Peoples History of the United States.
With the nature and scope of the readings, we
feel it is especially important to try and make this group as open and
non-heierarchial as possible, but at the same time show that this will
not devolve into a flaky non-productive setting. So the class will be
open to moving in directions that participants consense on taking it.
Among other places on the web, you can find Emma's book at:
http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_Archives/goldman/GoldmanCW.html
Zinn's book can be found at:
http://historyisaweapon.com/zinnapeopleshistory.html
with some other resources available at:
http://www.synaptic.bc.ca/ejournal/HowardZinn.htm
The first meeting will be important in trying to set the scope,
decision process, meeting places and curriculum/itinerary for the
group. While
drop-ins to the group are likely to alway be welcome, we hope if the
process for the group is important to folx, that they will try to make
it
to the first meeting.
