The Current State of Labor: Where Do We Go From Here?
Panel discussion about current issues facing the labor movement. Featuring: Ernie Grecco, Executive Director Baltimore AFL-CIO Council; Bill Bary, Director, Labor Studies Program, Dundalk Community College; Erica Schoenberger, Professor, Johns Hopkins University. Speakers will talk briefly then respond to questions in a discussion format, refreshments will be served.
Location:
Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus (main campus): Clipper Room, Shriver Hall (building number 25 on map http://webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/information_about_hopkins/visitor_information/how_to_get_here/homewood_campus/pdf/campus_map_0905.pdf)
Cost: FREE
Directions:
From I-95 (southbound) or from I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway): Take the beltway toward Towson to exit 25. Take Charles Street south for about 7 miles (when Charles Street splits a block after Loyola College and Cold Spring Lane, take the right fork). After you cross Univerity Parkway, the Homewood campus will be on your right. Continue southbound. Take a right at the second light, which is Art Museum Drive. Just after the Baltimore Museum of Art, bear right at the traffic island onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow this road to the three way intersection and bear left. Turn right onto the service drive and an immediate left into the visitor lot.
From I-95 (northbound): Take exit 53 onto I-395 north toward downtown Baltimore, then take the exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and follow the directions from Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard below.
From Maryland 295 (the Baltimore-Washington Parkway): Entering Baltimore, the parkway becomes Russell Street. Stay on Russell Street until (with the new M&T Bank Stadium to your right and Oriole Park at Camden Yards looming before you) you reach the right-hand exit marked Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (look carefully for this; the signs are small). This exit will put you very briefly on a service road parallel to Russell Street. Stay to the left and take the ramp marked Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Follow the directions (below) from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
From Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: Take King Boulevard north until it ends at Howard Street (remain in one of the middle lanes of King Boulevard to avoid a premature forced right or left turn). Turn left at Howard Street and proceed about 2 miles. One block past 29th Street, turn left at the traffic island (just before the Baltimore Museum of Art) onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow this road to the three way intersection and bear left. Turn right onto the service drive and an immediate left into the visitor lot.
From the Jones Falls Expressway (I-83) southbound: Take the 28th Street exit and go left on 28th Street. Turn left on North Howard Street. One block past 29th Street, turn left at the traffic island (just before the Baltimore Museum of Art) onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow this road to the three way intersection and bear left. Turn right onto the service drive and an immediate left into the visitor lot.
From Baltimore's Penn Station: If you opt to take a taxi from Penn Station to the Homewood campus, the fee should be quite modest. The university is very close to the train station.

12 d'octubre antimilitarista a Figueres

A. Dick Nowakowski To Rollerblade Down Gateway Arch in Protest of Chinese Occupation of Nepal
On October 12, 2005 at 9:30 a.m., noted industrialist and social activist A. Dick Nowakowski will strap on his roller blades at the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri in an effort to raise awareness of the Chinese Occupation of Nepal. Nowakowski’s monkey Andre will be making the descent with him, perched on his left shoulder. If they achieve their goal, Nowakowski will be the first person to successfully descend from the apex of the 660 foot Arch, which is the fourth most visited tourist destination in the world, without the aid of any man-made restraints. Likewise, Andre will be the first monkey to do so.
In preparation for his descent, Nowakowski has spent the past eleven months descending various smaller arches around North America, including the largest McDonald’s sign in the United States, which is located off interstate 81 in Binghampton, NY. (It is notable that Nowakowski was forced to spend 16 weeks in the hospital following that particular descent to recover from a concussion, broken bones and a ruptured spleen.) The month of July was then spent descending an “arch simulator” which Nowakowski constructed in his backyard. As a result of this intensive training regimen, Nowakowski has pronounced himself ready to tackle the mother of all arches, the Gateway Arch.
Nowakowski’s rollerblading suit, which was custom made for the descent, combines the pageantry of traditional Sherpa wedding attire with the protection of a complete set of football padding. Andre the monkey has been fitted with a matching suit. The suits include bat wing webbing which stretches between the arms and body. When Nowakowski and Andre’s arms are extended, the bat wings will increase drag as they move down the Arch. Nowakowski has also fitted a set of Ford Escort brakes to his standard rollerblades to assist in slowing his descent. Physicists have estimated that the rollerblading activist and monkey will reach top speeds of 315 kilometres per hour as they round the curve of the arch and head for the ground.
In contemplation of the fact that the bat wings and brakes may not sufficiently reduce his speed, Nowakowski has arranged to pile 150 used tires at the base of the Arch to break his fall. If all goes well, Nowakowski does not expect that the tires will be needed.
After the stunt, Nowakowski will perform a medley from his Songs and Sounds of the Sherpa dance production with the assistance of Andre and the Nowakowski Family Folk Singers, a group which features twelve members of a family that escaped from Poland by crossing the Alps prior to the student protests of 1982. Members of the Chinese Troops Out of Nepal Foundation will also be present to solicit donations for the cause.

Immigrant Rights and Historical Lessons in Immigration Policy
Immigrant Workers Fight for Their Rights, Organized
Ex-Braceros Struggle for Retirement Funds
Speakers(read below for bios):
· An ex-Bracero from Tlaxcala, where nearly 10,000
are organized in the National Assembly of ex-Braceros,
will discuss the historic impact of guest worker programs
and the ex-Braceros? struggle for retirement funds.
· A representative of a local day labor center or
immigrant organization will discuss the impact of
immigration policy on the day-to-day lives of immigrants,
and how community members and students can engage in
solidarity with immigrant day laborers? struggles.
· A representative of Mexico Solidarity Network
will provide additional social and economic context.
________________________________________________________________
The Issues
Ex- Braceros struggle for retirement funds: As debates
about immigration reform rage in the halls of Congress and
on Main streets across the country, it is helpful to
review lessons from the past. President Bush and many
Republicans are promoting reform measures very similar to
the post-World War II Bracero program. Bracero contracts
were attached to a particular employer, making the migrant
workers little more than indentured servants. The US
government withheld 10% of each contract, theoretically
for a social security program that would encourage workers
to return to Mexico when their contracts finished. But
over the years billions of dollars disappeared. Tens of
thousands of ex-Braceros are now organized, demanding
repayment of their retirement funds. So far the US and
Mexican governments have turned a deaf ear, but these
senior citizens, most over 70 years old, are dedicated and
militant in their struggle.
Immigrant workers struggle for rights:
Today there are about 12 million undocumented workers in
the US, constituting almost 10% of the entire workforce,
and more than half come from Mexico. Undocumented
migration is a direct result of neoliberal policies
developed in Washington that force poor campesinos to
abandon traditional livelihoods in search of alternative
survival strategies. Recent proposals for immigration
reform fail to address these root causes, serving only to
further criminalize individuals whose work is an essential
part of the United States economy and who support families
back home. Organized immigrant workers are calling for
students and community members to engage in solidarity
with struggles for fair wages and working conditions. This
is an excellent opportunity to build strategic connections
among immigrants, other community members and students.
