April
entweder persönlich beim

jeden Dienstag 19:30

Democracy School

All day

March 11 to March 13

Democracy School

Friday evening through Sunday early afternoon

Our February Democracy School filled up quickly, so we've scheduled a new one for March.

"Democracy School is eye-opening and mind bending. It combines historical, legal, and theoretical information on the corporation with a remarkably practical and powerful way of making change in your own community. Students get a notebook of valuable readings, lucid exposure to some of the most cutting-edge organizing strategies, and a nourishing experience of community with fellow activists. Anyone concerned about issues of corporate power and democracy should have this experience. You'll never be quite the same!"

Charlie Derber
Professor of Sociology, Boston College and author of Regime Change Begins at Home: Freeing America from Corporate Rule

Democracy School teaches citizens and activists ways of approaching and reframing exhausting and often discouraging single issue work (such as opposing toxic dumps, quarries, factory farms, etc.) in a way that we can all confront corporate control united on a powerful single front: people's constitutional and fundamental rights.

Massachusetts Democracy School is sponsored by the Center for Democracy and the Constitution in cooperation with the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (www.poclad.org) and CELDF.

Fee for the weekend is $275, with a group rate of $425 for two and $200 for each additional person. The fee includes all course materials and dinner on Saturday evening.

Some scholarships are available, please contact the office for further information. Special guest Richard Grossman of POCLAD will join the CDC staff for this session. The curriculum is online, or give us a call and we'll send you one. And if you have any questions, contact us at any time.

Enrollment is limited, so please register soon to ensure a space. Sign up online at:
www.constitution411.org/dem_schl.php=20

or write a check for the full amount with the notation "Massachusetts Democracy School" payable to "CDC", and mail to:

The Truth About the Drug Companies

The 2005 Humanist of the Year Award

Dr. Marcia Angell was the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine and is known for her taking a stand on issues of controversy. This year our Society has given much time to getting at the truth about the current national debate about the healthcare industry. The drug companies are a major factor of good health and harm. Her knowledge and insight is greatly appreciated.

The Ethical Society of Boston is a secular religious and educational fellowship without formal creed or dogma. We are a community, joined together to help develop our ethical ideals, to celebrate life's joys and support one another through life's crises, and to work together for the improvement of our world and the future of our children. Industrial Workers of the World Mtg

2:00 PM - 12:00 AM

The Boston area IWW meets regularly at the Lucy Parsons Center on the second Sunday of every month at 2pm. Meetings are open to all interested in militant industrial unionism.

Since its founding in 1905, the IWW has fought for better working and living conditions for all workers in all industries. The IWW endorses no candidates, nor does it participate in electoral politics. We also oppose the bureaucratic craft unionism of the AFL-CIO, which serves only to divide workers based on trade, engage worker against worker in wage wars, and mislead the workers into believing that the working class has interests in common with the employing class.

Instead we seek to unite all workers on a common economic front, under the banner of industrial unionism. Only then, will our combined strength succeed in usurping control of our labor away from the parasitic hands of the capitalist class. Once we stop doing what we are told to do and start doing mwhat we collectively decide to do instead, there isn't anything much that can stop us!

SweatFree Communities National Conference

8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

SweatFree Communities - A Network for Local Action Against Sweatshops

Denver, Colorado -- May 6-8, 2005
Friday 4pm - Sunday 12 noon

REGISTER BY APRIL 15 - DOWNLOAD THE FORM at www.sweatfree.org
Logistics details and the conference agenda are also available online.

********************
This is a great opportunity to network, build nuts and bolts
organizing skills, and discuss movement strategy with a wide variety of activists and local campaign organizers, including students, union organizers, and factory monitors. This conference is for both new and experienced sweatfree organizers. We very much encourage youth activists to come.

Since last year's conference the network of local sweatfree purchasing campaigns has grown, and our ability to share insights from one campaign to others increased. Our successes are multiplying, with many exciting victories and a growing number of active campaigns. Students are organizing in high schools and colleges and are also playing a key role in city and state campaigns. The policies adopted by local governments are of increasingly high quality – now including comprehensive scope (not just apparel and laundering services, but all goods purchased by an institution), non-poverty wages, independent monitoring, and strong union-friendly provisions – pushing labor standards in apparel and other manufacturing industries to spiral up,
rather than down.

We still have far to go before industry-wide improvements in the conditions of clothing workers around the world. Local campaigns and institutions are playing an increasingly important role in this struggle. The SweatFree Communities conference is a vital step along the way.

********************
Presentations will include:
--Opening Plenary: Movement Successes and Strategy for the Future with Scott Nova, Worker Rights Consortium; Maquila Solidarity Network; SweatFree Communities; United Students Against Sweatshops
--Building Power and Winning Local Campaigns - hear about current campaigns and the latest victories
--A public event featuring Chie Abad, a former Saipan garment worker; Gilberto Garcia, Just Garments Union organizer; Maritza Paredes, Honduran Independent Monitoring Team

Facilitated roundtable discussions will include:
--Building a Sweatfree Marketplace as a Movement Building Tool
--Using Sweatfree Policies to Support Worker Organizing- Lessons from the Gildan Campaign

Workshops will include:
--Sweatfree City and State Campaigns
--Sweatfree Schools Campaigns
--What's in a Sweatfree Purchasing Policy? What are exciting new additions to policies?
--Next Steps in Implementation and Enforcement

Confirmed presenters and facilitators include:
Matt Bates, AFL-CIO Union Label Dept
Brian Brown-Cashdollar, Western New York Sweatshop Awareness Project
Bjorn Claeson, SweatFree Communities
Mu Son Chi, Ethical Trade Action Group (Denver)
Eric Dirnbach, UNITE HERE
Liana Foxvog, SweatFree Communities
Gilberto Garcia, Just Garments union organizer
Andrew Kang Bartlett, Presbyterian Hunger Program, Presbyterian Church (USA)
Hee Won Khym, Behind the Label
Scott Nova, Worker Rights Consortium
Valerie Orth, Global Exchange
Brian O'Shaughnessy, New York Labor Religion Coalition
Maritza Paredes, Honduran Independent Monitoring Team
Jessica Rutter, United Students Against Sweatshops
Katherine Stecher, Campaign for Labor Rights & Nicaragua Network
Nancy Steffan, Worker Rights Consortium
Trina Tocco, International Labor Rights Fund
Erica Zeitlin, No More Sweatshops

We are also expecting additional presenters/facilitators from Honduran Independent Monitoring Team, Maquila Solidarity Network (Canada), No Sweat Connecticut, high school youth, and United Students Against Sweatshops.

There will also be time to make campaign plans and for small group break-outs on topic of choice.

As additional facilitators are confirmed, we'll post updates on our website.

********************
Please review the conference information on our website at
www.sweatfree.org and send in your registration as soon as possible, but no later than April 15. We encourage you to fundraise to cover your own costs and are happy to provide fundraising suggestions.
Because we do not want financial considerations to prevent anyone from attending the conference, limited registration, travel and lodging scholarships are available. You can make a scholarship request with your registration.

This year the conference is hosted by the Ethical Trade Action Group,a coalition working for sweatfree public schools in Denver.
********************
SweatFree Communities was founded in 2002 by anti-sweatshop organizers in Maine, Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin and elsewhere who were working separately on local campaigns to win "sweatfree" purchasing policies that prevent businesses from selling apparel made in sweatshops to public and religious institutions, such as school districts, cities, counties, and states. SweatFree Communities created a structure to facilitate the sharing of organizing resources and information, and built a national sweatfree movement that has the unity and political strength to generate significant market demand for products that are made in humane conditions by workers who earn living wages.
********************
Send your registration form and check to SweatFree Communities, 140 Pine Street, Florence MA 01062.

Moltes gràcies i Salut!

**Radical and Subversive film screeings every Sunday in Aberdeen**

**Provisional Schedule (subject to change!)**

24 April
Weapons of Mass Deception: Inside the Media War you Never Saw, Danny
Schechter, 104 min, colour, USA 2004
Presented by Paul O¹Hanlon from Edinburgh

There were two wars going on in Iraq - one was fought with armies of
soldiers, bombs and a fearsome military force. The other was fought
alongside it with cameras, satellites, armies of journalists and propaganda
techniques.

WMD explores this story with the findings of a gutsy, media
insider-turned-outsider, former network journalist, Danny Schechter, who is
one of America's most prolific media critics. Schechter says he
"self-embedded" himself in his living room to monitor media coverage, by
fastidiously tracking the TV coverage on a daily basis. He wrote thousands
of words daily about the coverage for Mediachannel.org, the world's largest
online media issues network, and then collected his columns. He has
continued his one-man investigation with WMD, a two-hour indie non-fiction
film that asks the questions that his media colleagues refused to confront
before, during and after the war. Featuring footage from inside Iraq, and
inside the media, WMD tracks the media war through February 2004.

No Pride in Occupation

5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Each year in a different city, a group named InterPride sponsors an international gay pride festival called “World Pride.” This August, the event is being held in Jerusalem, ironically organized under the title "Love Without Borders." Despite the event’s name, its call to action mentions neither the Palestinian people nor the wall which is currently being built to permanently divide them from their homeland. We are appalled that InterPride chose Jerusalem as the site of the second World Pride event in direct violation of the international movement to boycott Israeli goods and to divest from Israel in protest of the ongoing occupation and destruction of Palestinian lands. Despite the organization’s proclaimed neutrality, their choice of host cities will in reality have the effect of encouraging lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people from all over the world to ignore the boycott and spend significant funds in Israel, thereby bolstering its tourist economy and its disingenuous claim to being a free, democratic, state.

Though it is true that the Israeli army allows openly lesbian and gay people to serve, it is necessary to also remember the role of that army in oppressing people of Gaza and the West Bank. We believe that LGBTIQ liberation is best served by supporting local community organizing while also supporting the liberation struggles of all oppressed peoples. In this spirit, we support the work of Jerusalem Open House (the local sponsor of World Pride 2005 in Jerusalem) in fighting queer oppression, and we understand and respect that LGBTIQ people and organizations within Israel and Palestine will decide for themselves how to relate to World Pride. We are also aware that some conservative and right-wing people in Israel are opposed to World Pride being held in Jerusalem because they oppose LGBTIQ rights, and that some LGBTIQ people are considering attending the event to oppose these forces. We certainly understand this impulse, but we believe that after examining all of the many political issues involved it is more important to boycott travel to World Pride 2005 in Jerusalem to send the message to Israel that the civil rights victories gained by some LGBTIQ people within Israel do not justify or excuse the oppression of the Palestinian people or the occupation of their lands.

If you support Palestinian liberation and queer liberation, and believe that all struggles are connected and rely on one another for true success, please add your energy to this cause. We intend to have an active and visible presence at the Twin Cities Pride events, but we need your help in shaping our message and actions. There is no pride in occupation.

Mother's Day Justice & Peace March/Rally

12:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Women's Congress for Peace and cosponsors (see below)
invite everyone to the reclaim the day with the
5th Mother's Day Justice & Peace March/Rally Sunday, May 8, 2005.

Last year's march had the largest numbers in the five year history of the march. And, like last year, we will be asking you to honor the women of peace and justice in your lives - be they from the past, present, well-known, or friend or relative. Celebrate courageous women in all walks of life who have worked, and continue to work for peace and justice.
If possible, bring a sign with photo/info of a woman you honor.

This day, inspired by Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation, is just one way we can offer our society the inspiration of standing for peace and being peace.
An excerpt from the proclamation:

³Our sons (and daughters) shall not be taken from us to unlearn all we
have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We women (and men) of one country will be too tender to those of another
country to allow our sons (and daughters) to be trained to injure theirs.²

Come to the Mother's Day March and bring your families. Let us show the world how to celebrate!

For information, call 256-1760. If your organization would like to join the list of sponsors, we'd be proud to have you...just email (lewis.emily-AT-comcast.net) us or call.
