Kurt Gerron - Gefangen im Paradies
Vorfilm:
heimkehr. wien 1941/1996
institut für evidenzwissenschaft, A 1996, 5 min.

Ethnic Conflict and Economic Liberalization

The Onset of Ethnic Conflict and Economic Liberalization: Selective Incentives, Political Entrepreneurs and Mobilizational Resources
Nikolaos Biziouras, Research Fellow
Since 1989, there has been a continuing increase in the levels of economic liberalization and an explosion of inter-ethnic, intra-state conflict. For many scholars, this increased level of economic liberalization leads to an externally-derived, unavoidable redistribution of resources, thus increasing not only inter- but also intra-state inequality. Such a rise in intra-state inequality drastically increases the propensity for ethnic conflict.
Using large-N quantitative methods, economics-based scholars, who stress the causal links between factoral models of trade integration and occurrences of state disintegration in multiethnic states, have argued that economic liberalization leads to ethnic conflict because it induces the mobilization of the ethnic groups that can be better off by seceding. Alternatively scholars, who stress domestic-level explanations, have argued that economic liberalization leads to state shrinking, especially of social safety net policies, thus inducing mobilization along ethnic lines and ultimately conflict. Yet, both approaches stipulate that economic liberalization, with its increases in inter- and intra-state inequalities, is positively and linearly linked to ethnic conflict. The empirical record for this conventional wisdom is, however, often spotty and subject to methodological biases, especially in their measurement of economic liberalization.
Utilizing a unique dataset of ethnic conflict cases, quantitative techniques, and case study evidence from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bulgaria, and Ethiopia, the seminar presenter will argue that changes in the level of economic liberalization are non-linearly related to the onset of ethnic conflict.

Brazilian Journalist & Film Director Dorrit Harazim
Meet the Braz Family: Film & Discussion with Dorrit Harazim
Meet the Braz Family: A Documentary Film from Brazil Screening and Discussion with Brazilian Journalist and Film Director Dorrit Harazim
*Talk is in English and film in Portuguese with English subtitles*
"A Família Braz" (Meet the Braz Family)
Almost six million people live in the shadows of São Paulo, including Dona Maria, Seu Toninho, & their 4 sons and daughters. Through the lens of this family's experience, the film explores life for lower-middle class families struggling to survive in the outskirts of the megalopolis. It brings to light key contemporary issues affecting the Brazilian populace including social segregation, crime, racism, and the marked inequity in wealth and opportunity, giving a voice to this otherwise invisible part of Brazil.
Dorrit Harazim is a prize-winning Brazilian journalist and film-maker, and has covered international affairs over the last 30 years. She was the first woman journalist in Latin America to cover the Vietnam War on site, as she did the military coup in Chile, the Persian Gulf oil crisis, and four U.S. elections. She continues to carry out investigative journalism - her current project being an investigation of the situation of Brazilian migrants in the Boston area, which will appear in June. In recent years, she has dedicated herself to directing and producing films, including the documentary films that are being shown at Harvard and MIT this spring.

Religion & the Media in the US
Religion in the 21st Century: A Four-Part Series
Understanding the Dynamics and Impact of Change
The headlines are filled with stories about events in which religious faith or religious institutions are central. The dynamics within and between major faiths, as well as the role of faith in political and social life, are shifting quickly. These shifts are affecting how technologies are being used, how policy is framed and debated, and much, much more. This series will offer an overview of the factors and dynamics behind today's religious landscape. The goal of the series is to equip participants to understand the context within which they are working, leading, voting and living. Our aim is for thoughtful conversation with experts which involves education, self- reflection, and lots of opportunity for discussion

Acte d'Homenatge a Manuel Sacristán
Dijous 5 de maig de 2005, a les 12 hores
Intervindran:Alfons Barcelò, Juan Ramón Capella, Àngels Martínez Castells, Joaquim Sempere i Enric Tello.

Cine Pobre en Kalaska "The Weather Underground"

resistance, remixed
Resitance, Remixed is an experiment in tactical audio production where DJ Lotus creates audio which is in itself an act of resistance. Resistance, remixed also looks for new forms of resistance all over the world in an effort to find new, effective ways of combating neo-liberalism and the religious right, while creating direct democracy.

UC Santa Cruz And Santa Cruz City Council JOINT MEETING
UC Santa Cruz And Santa Cruz City Council JOINT MEETING
Thursday, May 5, 2005
Santa Cruz City Hall Council Chambers
3:00-5:00 p.m.
Do you have any thoughts on the future of UCSC and the City, the way things are run?
Encourage YOUR FRIENDS TO ATTEND, LEARN and SPEAK OUT. YOUR VOICE NEEDS TO BE HEARD!!
An extremely important opportunity for all -- UCSC students, SC residents -- too see how "both agencies are equally responsible and addressing the many well-identified impacts from the University. All the hot issues are on the agenda: traffic, transportation, housing, and the like. You'll hear updates on what is or isn't being done to solve these problems. This is reason enough to attend."
But an even greater reason to be at this meeting is to make it clear by your presence that you are concerned and care about these issues......that they matter and that you demand they be resolved!" -- neighborhood leader, Debbie Elston
SPEAK OUT during public comment time!!!!
Attached is the agenda. Some of what will be presented--
- overviews by mayor and chancellor
- transportation: traffic, alternative access, bus rapid transit
- economic vitality projects
- Good Neighbors Initiative: student-resident problems and relationships, rental ordinances
- Alcohol abuse awareness and prevention
- Updates on City and UCSC planning... the 2005 LRDP and City General Plan
- UCSC enrollment and on-campus housing issues

Post Carbon Santa Cruz introduction and brainstorming
This is a casual meeting / discussion about the topic of "peak oil" and its consequences for Santa Cruz. It is the first meeting for Post Carbon Santa Cruz and a follow up conversation for those who attended Richard Heinberg's presentation given on peak oil at the Vet's Hall in March. To learn more about Post Carbon Outposts go to:
www.postcarbon.org/
Meet others concerned about the coming evergy shortages and discuss the concept of "Relocalization" and what a Post Carbon Outpost here in Santa Cruz might look like. Introductions followed by brainstorming.
Here what Republican congressman Roscoe Bartlett has to say about peak oil in an interview with Dave Room of Post Carbon Institute:

Process Writing Class
There are no rules for writing in this class. What you have to say and how you have to say it is your own. My purpose is to guide each student to express what he or she needs to say in the medium which allows us to immortalize our thoughts through the written word.
No experience necessary. Any type of writing welcome (from technical, to poetry, to journalism, to personal diary entries, anything goes)

Watsonville Brown Berets
The Brown Berets are a historical part of the Chicano movement that was launched during the late 1960's. Our organization has been active in Watsonville since 1994 in responce to gang violance and ignorance that was taking the lives of our young people. Since then we have worked tirelessly on issues such as police harrassment, imrovement of our educational institutions, and demanding the voice of the disenfranchised community to be heard. We believe that through education, spiritaulity, cultura, and resistance that we can create effective changes in this society. We invite you to join our efforts. Mexica TIahui!!

Campus Radical Women and Radical Cheerleading!
Hello all!
I wanted to let you all know that Campus Radical Women will be hosting an event this Thursday May 5th featuring Radical Cheerleading! We will be talking about what Radical Cheerleading is about - from participating in labor solidarity actions to attending the Dyke March - and doing some practicing! Radical Cheerleading is a great way to get excited at rallies and events and we have cheers that address a wide range of issues: women's health and reproductive rights, genetically modified foods, and queer and trans rights. Please join us on Thursday at the UCSC
Women's Center at 7:30pm for snacks and socializing. Everyone is welcome and participation is encouraged but not forced!
If you'd like more info please give me a call at 831/466-9940 or email me at rwucsc-AT-yahoo.com.
Thanks and hope to see you there!
