Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore Meeting
Join the Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore as it meets on Monday nights at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) building on York Road. The Pledge, formerly the Iraq Pledge of Resistance, regularly engages in civil disobedience on behalf of our collective civil liberties. Every action is non-violent and is conducted peacefully.
The Pledge has a series of actions planned in the upcoming months that are designed to visibly oppose the Bush administration's "preemptive" warmongering and attacks on the Bill of Rights. If you're concerned about the direction the US is heading to please consider coming out and joining us. (Note: it is always advisable to call in advance to confirm the meeting is being held as scheduled.)

Peace Vigils all over Boston
Sojourners has issued an urgent call to action to honor the lives lost in war, and to advance the imperative for peace. Since March 19, 2003, more than 1,400 U.S. soldiers have been killed, as well as tens of thousands of Iraqis. U.S. citizens have also suffered on the domestic front, as crucial domestic programs that benefit low-income families have been threatened and the already- ballooning national deficit has swelled to compensate for the cost of war. Sojourners calls on readers to gather together in prayer and remembrance, and advocate for lasting peace and security in
the region.

Oceans: The Last Wild Frontier
Ellen Roy Herzfelder, Secretary of Environmental Affairs, Executive Office for Environmental Affairs
Ellen Roy Herzfelder, the state’s secretary of environmental affairs, will discuss proposed legislation to better guide the development of the state’s ocean waters.
In her remarks, Herzfelder will describe ocean management legislation that Governor Mitt Romney is planning to file on Friday, March 18.
Daniel Schrag, a professor of professor of earth sciences at Harvard University, who also directs the Harvard University Center for the Environment and Harvard’s Laboratory for Geochemical Oceanography, will comment on Herzfelder’s remarks.
Passage of legislation to better govern the state’s ocean waters was a priority recommendation of the Massachusetts Ocean Management Task Force, which was appointed by Governor Romney and Secretary Herzfelder.
The committee concluded the law is needed because of increasing conflict over the growing number of proposals to use the state’s coastal waters for everything from aquaculture to energy.
While those proposals are subject to a patchwork of state laws and regulations, the proposed law would be the first to give the state a unified management plan for its coastal waters.
This free event is sponsored by the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the Harvard University Center for the Environment and the Harvard Green Campus Initiative.

America's Economic Future
Harvard Book Store is pleased to announce that on Monday, March 21st Laurence J. Kotlikoff will discuss the new paperback edition of his book The Coming Generational Storm: What You Need to Know About America's Economic Future, with an extended section on Social Security.
In 2030, as seventy seven million baby boomers hobble into old age, walkers will outnumber strollers; there will be twice as many retirees as there are today but only eighteen percent more workers. How will Social Security and Medicare function with fewer working taxpayers to support these programs? According to Laurence J. Kotlikoff, if our government continues on the course it has set, we'll see skyrocketing tax rates, drastically lower retirement and health benefits, high inflation, a rapidly depreciating dollar, unemployment, and political instability. The government has lost its compass, says Kotlikoff, and the Bush administration's spending and tax policies have charted a course straight into the coming generational storm.
"The Coming Generational Storm lays out the problems in understandable language and compelling detail."—The Washington Post
All Harvard Book Store events are free and open to the public.
Please call 617-661-1515 for more information.
Laurence J. Kotlikoff is Professor of Economics at Boston University and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. One of the nation's leading experts on fiscal policy, national saving, and personal finance, Kotlikoff is the author or co-author of eleven books, hundreds of professional articles, and scores of policy papers and op-eds.

Super Size Me
Mark you calendars--we will be showing Academy Award nominee Super Size Me! Time TBA.
As always, there will be free food!
Super Size Me is one man's journey into the world of weight gain, health problems and fast food. It's an examination of the American way of life and how we are eating ourselves to death.
Morgan Spurlock hit the road and interviewed experts in 20 US cities. From surgeons general to gym teachers, cooks to kids, lawmakers to legislators, these authorities shared their research, opinions and "gut feelings" of our ever-expanding girth.
Finally, Spurlock embarked on a unique experiment in which he personally documents the effects of a fast food diet...on himself.

Ending Violence Against Women
Equality Now: Envisioning an End to Violence Against Women
Jessica Neuwirth, President, Equality Now
Women and Public Policy Program, Harvard Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response
Harvard's Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response and the Women and Public Policy Program invite you to the first annual "Visionary Ending Violence" keynote address and award reception honoring Jessica Neuwirth, President of Equality Now
RSVP REQUIRED: wappp (at ) harvard.edu
About Equality Now:
Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Working with national human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support their efforts to stop these human rights abuses. Through its Women’s Action Network of concerned groups and individuals around the world, Equality Now: distributes information about human rights violations; takes action to protect these violations; brings public attention to human rights violations against women.
The Women’s Action Network is committed to voicing a worldwide call for justice and equality for women. Issues of urgent concern to Equality Now include rape, domestic violence, reproductive rights, trafficking of women, female genital mutilation, and the denial of equal access to economic opportunity and political participation.
Human rights violations against women have historically been denied the attention and concern of international organizations, national governments, traditional human rights groups and the media. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of girls and women around the globe continue to endure debilitating and often fatal human rights abuses.
India: A 10-year-old girl is rescued by a flight attendant who notices her crying. Her father has sold her to the 60-year-old Saudi Arabian man sitting next to her for the equivalent of US$240.
Kenya: At a boarding school, 300 boys attack the girls' dormitory. Seventy-one girls are raped. Nineteen are trampled to death in the stampede to escape. The school's vice principal remarks, "The boys never meant any harm against the girls. They just wanted to rape."
Brazil: A man who confessed to stabbing his wife and her lover to death is for the second time acquitted of murder by an all-male jury. The acquittal is based on the argument that he acted in legitimate defense of his wronged honor.
Ireland: A 14-year-old girl, raped by the father of her best friend, learns she is pregnant. She is prohibited from travelling to England where abortion is legal. Only when she indicates she will commit suicide if forced to carry the pregnancy to term does the Supreme Court allow her to proceed.
United States: A 51-year-old woman is stabbed 19 times and killed by her former boyfriend as she waits inside a courthouse to extend an order of protection. Twice before he had been charged with harassment. Both times the charges were dropped.
These are only a few instances of abuses which occur every single day. Human rights violations against women must be documented, publicized--and stopped. We need Equality Now.

"Corporate Globalization: Trading Away Our Right To Protect Animals."
Monday, March 21, at 7:15 p.m. in UR's Lander Auditorium, Dr. Michael Greger, M.D., will present a talk titled "Corporate Globalization: Trading Away Our Right To Protect Animals."
With over 200 slides and a half-dozen video clips, Dr. Greger will explore the impact institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO) have had on animal protection worldwide, and what we can expect from the expansion of future trade agreements like the Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA). Covering a broad historical background, this thought-provoking and even humorous presentation will examine what may be the greatest threat ever posed to animal protection.
About the speaker: Dr. Michael Greger is a general practitioner specializing in clinical nutrition and is a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He is author of "Heart Failure: Diary of a Third Year Medical Student" and has contributed to a number
of books on nutrition and food safety issues. Dr. Greger has debated the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Director before the FDA and was invited as an expert witness to defend Oprah Winfrey in the infamous
"meat defamation trial." He is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and the Tufts University School of Medicine.
"Dr. Michael Greger is a wonderful speaker. I had heard that he was good. But I didn't expect him to be that good! He is intelligent and entertaining and his talks are clever and well-researched."
