"FrauenWelten" - FrauenFilmTage 2005 im Filcasino, Wien

All day

HIV-positive artist exhibit

5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Opening Reception: Mary Fisher From Negative to Positive

The Women’s Studies Research Center is proud to present a one-woman show featuring Mary Fisher’s handmade paper, quilts, sculptures, and mixed media work.

Mary Fisher is an HIV-positive woman whose artistic talents have been marshaled to raise public awareness about AIDS.

Her anthologies of speeches and photography have received critical national acclaim.

She and her art have been featured in national publications and network broadcasts.

She has been a tapestry weaver (1968-70), TV producer (1968-74), and government worker (Assistant to the President of the United States, the Honorable, Gerald R. Ford, 1974-76).

Her widely recognized work in handmade papers began in 1985, followed by photography, sculpture, prints and fiber art.

Senator Edward Kennedy remarked, “Mary Fisher’s journey of hope and compassion has opened doors, hearts and minds and brought a new understanding to overcome ignorance and the fear of AIDS. Her eloquent words and healing message are a powerful demonstration that a courageous individual can still make a difference in our society- and what a difference she has made.”

Jenny Holzer: Working in Public

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Contemporary Art

The Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Celebrity Lectures

March 2nd and 3rd, 2005

For more than twenty-five years, Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas, arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, from the Venice Biennale, to the Guggenheim in New York and in Bilbao, Spain, as well as the MFA’s West Wing. Whether formulated as a T-shirt, plaque, or LED sign, Holzer’s medium is always language, and the public dimension is integral to the delivery of her work. Starting in the late 1970s with Truisms and Inflammatory Essays—posters plastered to the walls of New York buildings—Holtzer’s LED screens, granite benches, and recently, projections on prominent façades, counter ignorance and violence with humor, kindness, and moral courage. Join Jenny Holzer for a discussion of the nature of public art and working in public spaces.

This annual series, generously funded by the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation, brings the greatest names in the arts to the MFA. Join us from October through April for six exciting lectures with celebrated speakers chosen for their achievements, creativity, and fresh perspectives.

Religion in the 21st Century: A Four-Part Series
Understanding the Dynamics and Impact of Change

The headlines are filled with stories about events in which religious faith or religious institutions are central. The dynamics within and between major faiths, as well as the role of faith in political and social life, are shifting quickly. These shifts are affecting how technologies are being used, how policy is framed and debated, and much, much more. This series will offer an overview of the factors and dynamics behind today's religious landscape. The goal of the series is to equip participants to understand the context within which they are working, leading, voting and living.  Our aim is for thoughtful conversation with experts which involves education, self- reflection, and lots of opportunity for discussion

Santa Cruz, California -- The Museum of Art & History (MAH), in partnership with the Santa Cruz Film Festival (SCFF), presents the second installment of MAH's after-hours programming, CineMAH, a film event for the entire family. CineMAH is held the first Thursday of the month and offers yet another perspective on current exhibitions at MAH. The event includes extended gallery viewing hours. The films featured on March 3, 2005, are Solo un Cargador (Porter) by Peruvian filmmaker Juan Alejandro Ramirez and Sacred Game by Thor Anderson. Both films compliment MAH's current exhibition Ancient Artists: Pre-Columbian Art from the Mississippi Museum of Art on view through March 13, 2005.

Solo un Cargador (Porter) is a heartbreakingly beautiful meditation about the life, hopes and dreams of a fictional Peruvian porter named Chuqui Orozco. Porter is the recipient of several international film awards and recently screened at The Sundance Film Festival 2005. This short film is a series of visually stunning scenes primarily taken from the streets of Cuzco and the footpaths through the Andes Mountains to Macchu Picchu. Sacred Game is a feature documentary set in the Chiapas region of Mexico documenting Mayan locals who retain much of their ancient ancestral rites and rituals. Filmmaker and SFSU professor Thor Anderson will be on hand to introduce his film and the Q + A that will follow the screenings.

Thor Anderson began his studies with the Highland Maya in 1973, and has been returning to Chiapas periodically for the past thirty years. His ethnographic research has focused on material culture, ritual, and cosmology, including a ten-year project that culminated with the making of Sacred Games in 1988. He has also worked in Northern Spain (Basque Country), as well as in U.S. inner-cities. He currently teaches anthropology at San Francisco State University. He and his wife Consuelo have two daughters, Madeleine and Thea. They live in San Francisco.

Sacred Games: Ritual Warfare in a Maya Village

(1988. One-hour. University of California ExtensionMedia)
This film depicts the spectacular celebration of Carnival in San Juan Chamula (Chiapas, Mexico). The upside-down world of "crazy February" features communitarian feasts, cross-dressing, and a five-day, break-neck schedule that calls for non-stop running from mountaintops to the plaza, from circle dances to waging a mock war. The Highland Maya pantheon includes both historical figures and mythological beasts, creating a world view that is at once wondrous, complex, and compelling.

Community Organizing Job Discussion

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Representatives from the Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be on the University of South Florida campus on Thursday, March 3 in the Marshall Center, Room 129 at 4 PM to discuss careers in the field of community organizing, and to interview anyone with an interest in organizing around poverty and race issues.

The DART Center is a nonprofit network of affiliates, founded in 1982 to assist in the development of strong, grassroots community organizations committed to democratic principles and values of justice and fairness. The DART Network currently consists of 21 affiliates spread throughout Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky, each with their own leaders, staff, funding base, and accomplishments toward justice at the local level. DART has fought and won across the country on a broad set of issues like joblessness, access to health care, living wage and job source agreements, police misconduct, improved public education, quality affordable housing, fair immigration practices, and dozens of others. We are broadening our power into new communities throughout the state of Florida by training a new generation of community organizers

During our visit to the USF campus, representatives from DART will discuss how community organizers:

· Develop and training leaders to take successful action on community problems
· Identify and train local leaders
· Strengthen communities through One-on-One relationship building

We will also accept applications and schedule interviews with anyone interested in launching a career in community organizing through the DART Organizers Institute, a summer, paid training program in grassroots organizing. This program is designed to give people in Florida the skills in grassroots organizing to launch a permanent career in the field within the DART Network.

The Information Session will take place on the University of South Florida campus on Thursday, March 3 in the Marshall Center, Room 129 at 4 PM. If you are interested, but cannot make the info session, please contact: Ben MacConnell at ben-AT-thedartcenter.org or (785) 841-2680 immediately. We will also schedule interviews with interested parties for the following day to take place in the USF Career Center. TEN COMMANDMENTS - BASIS FOR LAW OR RELIGION?

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

TEN COMMANDMENTS - BASIS FOR LAW OR RELIGION?

HEDY WEINBERG TO SPEAK AT PUBLIC MEETING, THURSDAY, MARCH 3.

The public is invited to hear Tennessee ACLU Director, Hedy Weinberg, the evening of Thursday, March 3. Refreshments will be served at 6:45. Public invited - free. This is the very day on which the United States Supreme Court is holding hearings on TWO cases involving the Ten Commandments, so it will be very timely. Hedy will give her impression of the arguments presented, which often gives clues as to what the decision will be.

The location is Cohn Senior Center in Nashville. The Senior Center is on the ground floor at 4805 Park Avenue in Nashville. Use the 46th Avenue exit (#205) of I-40. Courtyard parking is off 48th Avenue South with a special entrance. The meeting is sponsored by Nashville Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

TEN COMMANDMENTS CONTROVERSY

Even though the Ten Commandments are basic to Judaism and also to Christianity, both Jewish and Christian groups and individuals are among those who do not believe that they should be posted by government in public buildings. The two cases being heard by the United States Supreme Court in early March, McCreary County v. American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, and Van Orden v. Perry in Texas are examples. The American Jewish Committee supports the ACLU in the former, and the National Council of Jewish Women has an Amicus brief in the latter. In addition a brief filed in the Texas case on behalf of Hindus, Buddhists and Jains says that while they regard the Ten Commandments with utmost respect, an overtly religious monument is a blow to pluralism.

"The display of religious symbols, including the Ten Commandments, on public property, violates the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, and sends the message to non-adherents that they are outsiders in their own communities," said Jeffrey Sinensky, AJC's general counsel. "Such displays are especially inappropriate in situations where people of all faiths and of no faith convene daily to seek justice."

The AJC brief was filed with a coalition of Christian, Jewish and interfaith organizations. "When government attempts to rationalize its display of sacred texts by claiming secular purposes and secular effects, the inevitable tendency is to distort and desacralize the sacred text," the brief states.

It is estimated that 30 of Tennessee's 95 counties are posting the Ten Commandments. There are also other cases in various stages of litigation across the nation.

In Kentucky the Commandments were first posted alone, but after litigation was begun other items were added to the display in hopes of avoiding a decision against them. The Sixth Circuit ruled against the display, and a previous high court decision had already stated that the Commandments are religious and therefore may not be posted in public schools.

In Texas a lower court had decided that the six-foot granite monument on the grounds of the Austin State Capitol had been in place so long (since 1961) without being controversial that it did not violate the Constitution. The Amicus brief filed by Americans United together with People for the American Way and NCJW argues that just because a display is longstanding does not validate it. It also calls to the Court's attention the death-threats, vandalism and harassment against people who have brought church-state litigation.

* Revoking the power of money and corporations to control government and civic society.

Local chapters of Reclaimdemocracy.org are forming around the country, including one recently launched in Greenfield, MA. The goals of these groups include reversing corporate claims to Constitutional rights and reversing the judicial creation of "money = speech."

ReclaimDemocracy.org is a non-partisan (501c3) non-profit organization.
