James Circello enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Airborne infantryman in September 2001. He served with various units throughout Europe and deployed with the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Since leaving the military, Circello has been an outspoken critic of the war. He is one of the co-founders of March Forward!, an organization of veterans and service members standing against war and racism affiliated with the ANSWER Coalition.
