PROTEST: RELEASE THE SUCHITOTO POLITICAL PRISONERS!!

Monday, 30 July 2007
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

On July 2nd, 14 people were arrested BEFORE and AFTER a peaceful protest against water privatization in Suchitoto, El Salvador. Those arrested include the leadership of the historic Salvadoran rural development organization CRIPDES. Detainees have reported violent police abuse after the arrests, including being flown over a lake by police and told they were going to be dropped in.

In a secret tribunal hearing on Saturday July 7, 13 of the 14 arrestees were charged with terrorism. These 13 have been placed under "preventative prison" for a term of 3 months while the prosecution builds their terrorism case.

THIS ESCALATION OF REPRESSION MUST NOT REMAIN UNCHALLENGED!!
Join us in solidarity with the people of Suchitoto as we denounce this repression and demand the immediate release of the 13 political prisoners by the Salvadoran government!!

A delegation from the Salvadoran community will be meeting with the General Consul, while a support rally is held outside consulate. Please find an english-language flyer for the demonstration attached; a bilingual version will be coming shortly.

This action is sponsored by CISPES and Cambridge-El Salvador Sister Cities. For more information, or to get involved in the planning, contact Boston CISPES: 617.576.1709 boscispes@speakeasy.net
