"What is the Lesbian Community?", a lecture presented by Dr. Esther Rothblum

You're invited to "What is the Lesbian Community?", a lecture presented by Dr. Esther Rothblum. This Thurs., May 17 from 7-8:30p at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre St. Dr. Esther Rothblum is Professor of Women's Studies at San Diego State University and editor of the Journal of Lesbian Studies. Last year she co-edited the book Lesbian Communities: Festivals, RVs and the Internet, and she has received a grant from the Lesbian Health Fund to interview lesbians about their communities. In her presentation, Dr. Rothblum explore what and where is the "lesbian community”? Did it ever exist, and how can we find one that meets our needs? How can we find a warm lesbian community in an age of alienation?” Then come back for Eileen Myles on Thurs., May 31, for her talk on “Foam: The Birthplace of the New Lesbian Frontier”. Noted author Eileen Myles says, “I've been thinking kind of obsessively about when a witch for example is killed and all that's left is a pile of foam. Or when a goddess appears and there's also some bubbles. I'm not sure, but I think there's more than one kind of reproduction and I'm wanting to discuss my own personal obsession with this magical kind.” This is not an academic lecture though she works in the academy. This is a poet in all seriousness, trying to tell the truth. These important and fun lectures end The Women's Resource Center's fifth annual Women’s Lecture Series . Each year, this series brings in some of the nation’s most thoughtful researchers, teachers and scholars to discuss issues of importance to our diverse women’s community.
