Court hearing on Proposed Prisoner Fees

Tuesday, 14 December 2004
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Organizer: Kindred Spirits

On Tuesday, December 14th there will be a hearing before Judge Nikki Clark at 10:30 a.m. at the Leon County Courthouse. The hearing is the result of a lawsuit filed by Kindred Spirits, a small non-profit organization that provides support and friendship to inmates on Florida's Death Row and their families.
The Florida Legislature passed a bill last session that provides for the Dept. of Corrections to charge a fee of up to $6 per month for the use of the prison "banking services." This law impacts all Florida prisoners, not just those on Death Row. All items in prison must be purchased through the canteen, the prison "store." Prisoners buy staples such as toothpaste, soap, thermal underwear, etc. They also have access to a small amount of art supplies. Kindred Spirits sends about $10 per month to about 70 inmates on Death Row. If this law goes into effect the$10 a month may become $4 a month. Kindred Spirits sued the Department of Corrections on behalf of all prisoners in Florida and are represented by the Florida Justice Institute which is handling the case for free.
