Rebel Music Cuba arrives in Scotland!

Rebel Music Cuba comes to Barfly - Glasgow this Thursday, November 4th. The night is being organised by Rock around the Blockade, a campaigning group which raises money around Britain to provide Cuban youth organisations with sound and disco equipment.

The Glasgow night will feature a host of local bands including Graduation Day, The Digerati and The Flykicks who amongst them will be playing unmissable head banging Rawk! Jazz grooves, Up Tempo indie rock n roll and a few things in between. Guest DJs for the are Neil MacDonald (Punktrap) and the must sought after David Barbarossa.

Rock around the Blockade were formed in 1994 to defend and promote the struggle of the Cuban people in their fight against imperialism. Cuban society is organised in the interests of people not profit. Taking the example of the Cuban Revolution onto the streets they hold demonstrations; run street stalls, organise meetings, gigs and club nights to raise funds for Cuba.

In 1995 the UJC which is the biggest youth organisation in Cuba asked us to donate sound systems and disco equipment for Cuban youth. Such material is in scarce supply as a result of the 40 year old US trade blockade with Cuba. At that time the British Government had introduced the Criminal Justice Act which penalised young people and criminalised rave music. The contradiction was clear. Our capitalist government was threatened by youth culture and street parties. In Cuba they believe that young people need ‘soul food’ to improve their quality of life. So far Rock around the Blockade has taken five sound systems to Cuba, which are constantly in use. The next sound system is being sent out next summer. The money raised from the night in Glasgow will go directly to fund this venture.
