Rev. Luis Barrios from NY About His New Book
Saturday, 16 October 2004
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Organizer: Latinas & Latinos for Social Change
Rev. Luis Barrios is professor of psychology at the University of New York (CUNY) and Associate Priest at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, also in New York City. “Pitirreando” is not the first book Rev. Barrios has written. Among other titles he has written: “Josconiando: dimensiones sociales y políticas de la espiritualidad (Josconiando: social and political dimensions of spirituality)” and “Gangs and Society”.
However, writing is not the only activity at which Rev. Barrios excels. He takes his ideas to the streets in defense of the human rights of the poor and oppressed of this earth. He is a fervent supporter of independence for his native country Puerto Rico. Just like Malcolm X, Rev. Barrios insists that social justice must be achieved by all means necessary.
The book “Pitirreando” is a collection of his weekly articles for the Spanish newspaper “El Diario La Prensa de Nueva York”. It is therefore a current chronicle of important events, from the struggle to get the U.S. Navy out of Vieques to the electoral fraud that took President Bush to the White House. Here he also writes about the abduction of Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez and about deep theological matters, whereas Rev. Barrios doesn’t hesitate to call God, Goddess. Likewise Rev. Barrios denounces the imperialist warrior character of Bush’s war against Afghanistan and Iraq and the Muslim world.
