War Tax Resistance Workshop
Monday October 4th @ 7pm
June Bug Café, 403A Centre St. Jamaica Plain
"Let them march all they want -- as long as they pay their taxes."
- General Alexander Haig.
Military spending already accounts for a large portion of the U.S. federal
budget and is currently on the rise. Many who oppose the war in Iraq
and/or the war on terrorism are asking themselves: what can we do as
individuals to reduce our complicity in these campaigns?
War tax resistance is the practice of redirecting tax dollars designated
for military spending to programs that fund human needs. This short
workshop serves as a practical introduction to the diverse methods used by
war tax resisters to redirect amounts ranging from a few dollars to
thousands, converting a part of their tax dollars in a source of funding
for organizations working to promote social, economic, and environmental
justice. We'll discuss the history of war tax resistance as well as some
possible consequences of engaging in this kind of nonviolent direct
action.
