Location:
BELO HORIZONTE, MG, BRASIL - Debaixo do Viaduto Santa Tereza, no centro de Belo Horizonte, um espaço de frente à Serraria Souza Pinto, ao lado da Estação Ferroviária, Estação Central de Metrô, pertim do Parque Municipal!

Argentina Author Event

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Marina Sitrin will be reading from her book,
Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina.
published by AK Press.

December 2001 marked the beginning of a popular rebellion in Argentina. After IMF policies led to economic meltdown millions of Argentineans poured into the streets to protest the freezing of their bank accounts, the devaluing of their currency and the bankruptcy of their state. This rebellion - of workers and the unemployed, of the middle class and the recently declassed - erupted without leadership or hierarchy. Political parties and newly emerged élites had no role in the movement that toppled five consecutive national governments in just two weeks. The social movements that exploded in Argentina that December not only transformed the fabric of Argentine society but also highlighted the possibility of a genuinely democratic alternative to global capital.
Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina is the story of those movements, as told by the men and women who are building them. Come and hear from the people who created the neighbourhood assemblies involving tens of thousands of active participants, who occupied the hundreds of factories run directly by workers.

Another world is possible!

THE NEW YORK GYPSY FILM FESTIVAL OCT 1-7

12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

The first annual NY Gypsy Film Festival dedicated to embracing the Roma culture and heritage of gypsies around the world, will be held the first week of October 2007. All screenings, Q&A's, corresponding exhibitions and musical events of the festival will take place from October 1-7 at Mehanata 113 Ludlow St. in the Lower East Side. The festival will be comprised of thirteen films from Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Greece, and the US.

Through literally centuries of slavery, genocide, massacre, and relentless ostracizing, the Romani (Gypsy) people who presently number around 15 million worldwide, continue to suffer unprecedented levels of violence, civilian attacks through fervent segregation, police brutality, and an appalling lack of legitimate representation in art and media. Abrasively, intimately, and artfully handled in thirteen hand-picked films from Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Greece, and the US; the first annual New York Gypsy Film Festival brings some of these artists and their subjects to the forefront of the so called 'First World' with love, and without mercy.

The NY Gypsy Film Festival will host the world premiere of Sándor Cs. Nagy's Mundi Romani, a Hungarian documentary that depicts twelve artists presented at the 2007 Venice Biennale as part of the Roma Pavilion.

Human Heart Explodes is a film directed by Helder Mira, produced by Matt Orefice and Paul A. McDonald. The documentary visualizes Safet Tairov's struggles to help his disadvantaged and ostracized Roma (Gypsy) community in a small village in Eastern Europe. A discussion with the filmmaker will take place after the screening of this film.

A special event presentation screening will be held of The Pied Piper of Hutzovina . The film documents Pavla Fleischer's adventures from Budapest to Ukraine alongside gypsy spirited frontman of Gogol Bordello; Eugene Hutz. There will be a Q&A following the screening with Pavla Fleischer.

Luchia Dragosh's The Child Within, is a human trafficking awareness screening event of a dramatic feature that investigates the lives of three young pregnant women from Bulgaria, Belarus, and China, who flee to America despairing their circumstance to search for lives of freedom. Instead they find themselves victims of human trafficking. Q&A with the filmmaker to follow the film's screening.

A special closing screening will be held on October 7, 2007, presenting American Gypsy  and The Gypsy Caravan with a Q&A to follow the films by Director/Producer/Writer Jasmine Dellal. The Gypsy Caravan is an ethnographic exploration of Roma musicians including renowned Fathers of Gypsy music; Taraf de Haidouks and Fanfare Ciocarlia.

2640 hosts two Creative Convergence workshops in arts and activism!

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

2640 is pleased to host two workshops in the final day of The Creative Convergence, a citywide festival of Art, Activism and Community presented October 3-7 by Alternate ROOTS, Baltimore Theatre Project, and ClancyWorks Dance Company

For more information on all the exciting workshops, performances, and social events in the festival please visit the Creative Convergence website.  More detail on the workshops taking place on October 7th at 2640:

1:30-4:00 pm:

Theatre Action Group: Embracing Discomfort
In this workshop, Theater Action Group (TAG) asks how this festival can serve us as artists and activists to identify, explore and address the contradictions in our work?  TAG is open to working with festival participants and leaders to identify and respond to an emerging concern, theme or need that arises during the festival.  FREE!

4:30-6:00 pm:

Brave Soul Collective: Embracing Your Truth
Through the use of group discussion, BSC will conduct their "Brave Soul" gathering with a specific focus on the power (and/or) importance of embracing one's truth in order to increase self esteem, dispel stereotypes, and reduce the risk factors generally associated with HIV infections.  BSC has found that the ability to identify & demonstrate one's truth openly is extremely beneficial not only to individuals, but to larger groups of people who may not otherwise take the time to understand, acknowledge and accept one another.  FREE!
