Ecumenical Discussion: Remedial Christianity

6:30 PM - 12:00 AM

Rev. Sue Davis announces a new summer series - following the ecumenical discussions of the past three years that have been lively and meaningful to many of us. The basis is a book she highly recommends: "Remedial Christianity — What Every Believer Should Know about the Faith, but Probably Doesn't" by Rev. Dr. Paul Laughlin. Laughlin is an ordained minister, professor and chair of the department of religion and philosophy at Otterbein College.

Schedule of sessions: 10 Wednesday evenings, June 13 through August 22 (except July 4), from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Place: First UMC Endicott. You may order the book, or purchase it on Amazon.com: $13.60 new or $7.95 used. Please call the church office to register: 748-7434. Come when you can, even if vacations or other obligations interrupt your attendance. There is no cost for the series.

Selective quotes from the Bible have been used to justify slavery, war, oppression of women, condemnation of homosexuals, exclusive nationalism. Whether you consider yourself a believer or not, you may be interested in a very different framework for Biblical understanding.

This series will introduce some of the methods of historical-critical scholarship in biblical and religious studies, "placing the scriptural heart of the faith in its true historical context."

It will explore Christian Theism, the basic theological model of traditional Christianity (as well as of Judaism and Islam), and its alternatives. (Did you know there are alternatives within Christianity?) We will study Jesus of Nazareth and the Origins of Christianity; the Christ of Faith within the History of Christianity; Sin and Human Nature in the Christian Tradition; Grace and Salvation within the Christian Tradition; The Church, and the Churches from Pentecost to the Parousia (Second Coming of Christ); and Alternative Christian Views, the World's Religions, and the Future of the Faith.

Location:
First United Methodist Church Endicott

Cost: Free

מחאה של משפחות הטרור-כלכלי מול מלונות והסוכנותProtest of Econ-Terror At Hotels And Agenc

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

English below

The Jerusalem municupality and the Ministry of housing continue to disregard our protest encampment. That's why we have to remind them of our presence and our demands.

Jewish and non-Jewish Millionaires that donate huge sums of money to the Jewish Agency, and people of the Agency themselves, are spending this money on luxurious suites in Jerusalem's top luxury hotels. All that is taking place while a few meters from these suites, whole families are sleeping in tents, struggling to have a roof over their heads.

For whoever is not counting, today (Monday) the encampment is already two-month-and- a-week old.

We're here, noisy and polluting city-center traffic all around us, in the summer heat, Jerusalem's night cold, and we're still prepared to fight the authorities' deliberate disregard of our demands. The families and activists of the encampment have not broken yet.

On Wednesday the 15.8 we'll protest in front of the Jewish Agency and the luxury hotels in the city center. Please join us. We will meet at 18:00 in the encampment.

Stop the Execution!

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

DEATH ROW? HELL NO!

Stop the Execution of Kenneth Foster Thursday August 16 6PM

City Heights Rec Center

4380 Landis St

2 Blocks So. of University on Fairmount

Kenneth Foster was sent to Texas' death row at the age of 19 not for killing anyone, but for driving away after someone was killed. Set to be executed on August 30, 2007, Kenneth could be killed simply because, as the Austin Chronicle has put it, he was in "the wrong place at the wrong time." A national campaign made up of activists, as well as family and friends of Kenneth, is underway to try to stop this execution. You can help.

Not only is this case an egregious miscarriage of justice, it highlights some of the fundamental issues surrounding the death penalty, namely, racism and the broken criminal justice system. The death penalty is under increased scrutiny in California and across the nation and with continued pressure from activists, the death penalty can be abolished.

Come to a meeting of the ISO to examine the roots of legal lynching, explore the current state of the criminal injustice system, and begin to organize a local campaign to SAVE KENNETH FOSTER!

For more information on Kenneth's case, visit www.freekenneth.com and savekenneth.blogspot.com.

E-mail isosandiego-AT-yahoo.com for more information. Meeting is in English with Spanish translation available.
