Columbus Park Mural Project Unveiled

10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

(BINGHAMTOM- N.Y) Mayor Matt Ryan will hold a press conference Monday, June 4th at 10:30am in Columbus Park to unveil the new community mural. 40 students from Columbus Alternative High School with project director, Michelle Tulumello painted the mural since the beginning of the school year in September. Funding for the Columbus Park Mural Project is provided in part by a project Grant from the United Culture Fund, a program of the Broome County Arts Council.

“This infusion of art into Columbus Park is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood,” stated Mayor Ryan. “The mural created a partnership between students, community members and neighbor’s, infusing greater pride and ownership of Columbus Park.”

The mural depicts a historical timeline of the Center City neighborhood. The project commemorates the history of the Underground Railroad in Binghamton. Historians have proclaimed that Columbus Park was the first site of the Trinity Zion church in the early 1800’s, which served as a safe house for runaway slaves. Descendants of the Trinity Zion church and others that were part of the Underground Railroad exist in the neighborhood today.

Students from the Columbus school not only worked on the mural, but studied the Underground Railroad and the Civil War. Classes completed group projects and individual reports. Students learned about the local heritage and the struggle for freedom African American’s experienced.

“This community art project increased student’s self-esteem and community pride,” said Michelle Tulumello, artist and project director. “The student’s hard work and creativity has inspired ownership and sense of community.”

This Saturday, the Broome County Urban League is hosting the Annual Juneteenth Celebration to commemorate the end of slavery. The free event will take place in Columbus Park from 12pm to 5pm, beginning with an 11:30am procession to the park from City Hall. There will be food, music, games, prizes and community demonstrations. Should it rain, festivities will move to St. Mary’s gym located at Hawley and Fayette St.
