ALA President's Program
Creating an Advocacy Epidemic
Sunday, January 16, 2005, 3 - 5pm
In today’s difficult economic conditions, it is more important than ever before to stand up and speak out for libraries to ensure that we retain our funding and support. Join ALA President Carol A. Brey-Casiano as she welcomes Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, and a panel of distinguished speakers in an exciting program that demonstrates how to mobilize individual grassroots advocacy efforts in your community into a nation-wide advocacy ‘epidemic.’ By turning passive support into educated action, we can enhance the image of and increase support for libraries, librarians and library workers, bring increased attention to critical national issues such as literacy and equity of access, and expand the global reach of librarians. Whether you are an experienced library advocate or are taking your first steps along this important path, you can’t afford to miss this program. We Can Do It!/Si, Se Puede!

Election 2004: What Happened?
Election 2004: What Happened? Was the Election Stolen?
Political activists Jonathan Simon and Alice Copeland Brown will address 2004 voting election irregularities, including reports of voter intimidation and suppression, voter violations, voting machine problems, and discrepancies between exit polls and the “official“ results.
Simon, an expert on political survey analysis, first downloaded exit poll data before the data was changed to predict a Bush win. He presented a sworn affidavit regarding his findings to the House of Representatives December 8 Judiciary Committee forum. Simon’s findings have been the source of one of the most serious lines of inquiry about the 2004 election. Simon will discuss the implications of his data as well as other voting irregularities in the 2004 election.
Alice Copeland Brown, lifelong political activist, speaks from her 30-year experience as a software engineer for U. S. agencies. She has been actively involved in election reform and is uniquely qualified to discuss electronic voting.

4 p.m. (FREE/ALL WELCOME) - "Killer Fats and Acrylamide:
How Some Vegetarian Foods May Be Damaging Our Health"
Michael Greger, M.D., will present an exciting new nutrition seminar, packed with information and humor.
A vegan diet can be the healthiest diet in the world, but just because people are eating vegetarian or vegan does not necessarily mean they are eating healthfuly. Trans fats are found in animal fats, but are also found in processed foods that contain hydrogenated oils. These toxic trans fats may be killing tens of thousands of Americans every year. In this cutting-edge informative presentation, Dr. Michael Greger documents our government's complicity with the processed food industry in endangering the public's health. Dr. Greger also offers an update on acrylamide, a possible carcinogen discovered in fried and baked starchy foods.
A graduate of Cornell University and Tufts Medical School, Dr. Greger is a physician specializing in vegetarian nutrition and a nationally recognized speaker on important nutrition and public health issues. One of the most entertaining medical speakers you may ever hear, Dr. Greger will keep the air waves crackling with this talk, jam packed with valuable information, presented with great clarity, and offered in a lively and entertaining presentation style.
