O assalto à cidade - invenção e apropriação no espaço urbano

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

O assalto à cidade - invenção e apropriação no espaço urbano

Jubilee Cafe

12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

***Actual time is 7:15-8:15am***

Jubilee Café is an ecumenical campus and community outreach program sponsored by Canterbury House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry of the University of Kansas. It is committed to serving our homeless and in-need neighbors with dignity and respect. Our primary goals are to enhance self-esteem and promote wellness among our guests, our volunteers, and ourselves. Participation in, or affiliation with, either Canterbury House or any other sponsoring organization is not a prerequisite for volunteering at the Jubilee Café.

he Jubilee Café provides our homeless and in-need neighbors in the Lawrence area a generous and healthy breakfast on Tuesday and Friday mornings in a setting that allows our volunteers to interact with each person on an individual basis. Jubilee Café is a fully licensed restaurant that has been operating since 1994. We believe that by treating our visitors as guests and our volunteers as vital, we will affirm individual humanity and enhance self-esteem. The simple act of choosing an item from a menu allows a person to exercise a measure of control in one basic area of his or her life, which can cross over into other areas as well. And the act of serving another person in need gives us the direct experience of "loving our neighbor as ourselves."

Basement of the First Methodist Church, 10th and Vermont, Lawrence.

Be sure to come out and support this important cause. The D3 gallery was an important part of our emerging art scene, and now is the time to rally for their support!

The three partners of District Three continue to pursue their collective passion of promoting emerging artists and supporting community art projects. We shall continue their vision by hosting a benefit art auction: "To Be...is to Participate", an evening of art, music, performance, dance and camaraderie in support of our creative family.

A $10 donation is requested for entry, which will enable you to bid on any piece of art you have an affinity for. Over 65 pieces of artwork have been donated and the starting bid is set at $0.00, so it will be possible for
many people to go home with some amazing works of art. We hope you will join us to celebrate and support the cause.

Store Wars - When Wal Mart Comes To Town

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

This award-winning film looks at the impact on a small town when Wal-Mart plans to build a mega-store there.

In the US, Wal-Mart opens a new mega-store every two business days. This is the story of the impact of discount chain stores on American towns and cities, and on our society as a whole.

STORE WARS follows events in Ashland, VA, over a one-year period, from the first stormy public hearing that galvanizes residents' opposition till the Town Council takes a final vote on the proposed Wal-Mart store. Arguments for the store (tax revenues, low prices, jobs) and against it (destroys small town character, traffic, low-end jobs) are articulated and hotly debated. The cast of characters includes the mayor and Town Council members who will eventually make the decision, Wal-Mart representatives and the "Pink Flamingos," the grassroots citizen group opposed to the store.

STORE WARS does not single out Wal-Mart, but rather highlights its position as the icon of the Big Box industry. While offering a critical view of this industry, the film presents fairly all viewpoints on this controversial issue.

Location:

Now in its fourth year, MOBILIVRE-BOOKMOBILE is an annual
touring exhibition of artist books, zines, and independent
literature. It explores the long held tradition of bookmobiles as movable
libraries. Traveling by way of a vintage 1959 Airstream Trailer, the
BOOKMOBILE visits a variety of venues in Canada and the US including community
centers, schools, libraries, festivals and artist-run spaces. A group of
coordinators traveling with the exhibition facilitate workshops, artist talks,
and educational forums. The annual traveling collection of approximately 300
book works range from handmade and one-of-a-kind to photocopied and small press
publications.

Along with showing the collection, the BOOKMOBILE will teach bookbinding and
zine making workshops and give talks about the history and functioning of
the BOOKMOBILE.

The BOOKMOBILE collective consists of a fluctuating group of dedicated
volunteers, coordinators, jury organizers, and tour guides. Although the
project is based primarily in Montreal, QC, and Philadelphia, PA, collective
members reside in various cities throughout North America.

Please visit us on the web for a better
understanding of who we are and what we do. This project is made possible by
grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and through the generous
contributions from many people.

Location:
Trinity Lutheran Church on Rte. 141 (Holyoke St.) across the street from Flywheel in Easthampton, MA. In the same neighborhood as the Brass Cat, Smokin' Lil's and Nini's. Flywheel's address is 2 Holyoke St. Directions on our website.
