U-berg halt's Maul!

Phantoms of Lost Liberty: The U.S. Constitution in Crisis

10:30 AM - 5:30 PM

A Conference and Discussion on the U.S. Constitution in the War on Terror

It is often said that September 11th changed everything. Does this mean the U.S. Constitution, too? There's a Constitutional debate raging right now and it is over how much power the government has in its War on Terror. Are secret arrests permissible? Torture? Surveillance? Restrictions on speech and protest? Lying by police and government officials? Is the Constitution even relevant in this new kind of warfare? Or is it quaint and outmoded? Many people have argued that Americans now face the greatest Constitutional crisis of our history.

On September 17, 1787 the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for a last time in Independence Hall to sign the just completed Constitution, thus creating the first modern constitutional republic built on the twin principles of limited government powers and protection of the rights of people. September 17th has been set aside by the U.S. Congress as Constitution Day, a time to reflect on what the Constitution means to us today.

Maryland Institute College of Art and Women for Mutual Security have gathered a group of legal experts and civil libertarians on Constitution Day - the 218th anniversary of the Constitution - to discuss the burning questions of the Constitution in these times of Terror.

2005 Boston Asian American Film Festival Grassroots Rising Program!

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

** GRASSROOTS RISING PROGRAM **
Friday, September 16, 2005 @ 7 PM

WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED
Directed by PrYSM
35 min, 2003

A documentary film about a Southeast Asian youth uprising against the forced deportation of Cambodian refugees in Providence, Rhode Island. Hundreds of youth marched to the Providence INS, joined arms to block off a traffic intersection, and poured flowers on the doorsteps of immigration. This struggle created a new organization, the Providence Youth Student Movement, and this is their story of their quest for justice.

OVERSHADOWED: BOSTON'S CHINATOWN
Directed by Paul Niwa & the Emerson College Journalism Documentary Class
27 min, 2005

Overshadowed: Boston’s Chinatown focuses on the changing landscape of Boston’s Chinatown amid many new controversial developments, including Kensington’s proposed construction of a 30-story luxury apartment building on the site of a historic theatre. Featuring interviews from politicians, community activists, and residents, the documentary looks at re-development projects, the demolition of the Gaiety Theatre and how Chinatown residents are coping with the rising cost of living.

GRASSROOTS RISING (Boston premiere!)
Directed by Robert C. Winn
60 min, 2005

A powerful documentary exploring the lives of Asian immigrant workers through their search for justice, liberty and equality and their innovative contributions to the current worker-led labor movement in L.A. Juxtaposing poetry by spoken word artist Alison de la Cruz with the stories of immigrant workers, slave laborers, and activists alike, the film tells the stories of Koreatown restaurant workers arbitrarily fired despite being too ill to work, Pilipino housekeepers kept as cheap labor, Thai women held captive in a virtual prison sweatshop along with supermarket workers picketing for better wages and working conditions.

CARRIBEAN DINNER!!!

*benefit for Anarchist People of Color conference attendees*

$15-30 SUGGESTED DONATION

Friday 9/16, 7:30pm

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SOLIDARITY.

SANKOFA: a film by Haile Gerima

SANKOFA is an Akan word that means, "We must go back
and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we
understand why and how we came to be who we are
today."

Written, directed and produced by Ethiopian-born
filmmaker Haile Gerima, SANKOFA is a powerful film
about Maafa-the African holocaust. Done from an
African/African-American perspective, this story is a
vastly different one from the generally distorted
representations of African people that Hollywood gives
us.

This revolutionary feature film connects enslaved
black people with their African past and culture. It
empowers Black people on the screen by showing how
African peoples' desire for freedom made them resist,
fight back, and conspire against their enslavers,
overseers and collective past through the vision on
Mona, who visits her ancestral experience on a new
world planation as Shola. We share the life she
endures as a slave and experiences her growing
consciousness and transformation.

Red Emma's

Chris Chandler and David Roe

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Few musicians can claim on-the roadisms the way Chris Chandler can. He
is a true veteran of the road, traveling across The United States of
Generica for many years. His anthology of road tales transforms into a
flock of doves beneath the musical high-wire act.
He has worked with everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Ani DiFranco and
Pete Seeger to Mojo Nixon. Utah Phillips says, Chris Chandler is the
best performance poet I have ever seen. But this is not performance
art like the cliches of Hollywood would imply. No one pours chocolate
on the wings of a sparrow. This is steeped in the centuries of
tradition that define theatre.

Prisons: Inside the New America from Vernooykill Creek to Abu Ghraib Speaker: David Matlin Book Signing

7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Through the eyes of poet and essayist David Matlin, who spent ten years teaching in a fully-accredited college-level prison education program in New York State, Prisons: Inside the New America From Vernooykill Creek to Abu Ghraib (North Atlantic books, Berkeley, CA, 2005) examines the history and horrors of imprisonment in the United States. Matlin asserts that privatization of the prison industry has led to an irreversible weakening of our national identity, and shattering of public trust in the American justice system both at home and abroad. With clarity and passionate precision, he illustrates to readers the severe penalty a combination of degradation, abuse, and corruption inflicts on inmates, and on society as a whole. The book is widely reviewed and continues to receive strong critical acclaim.

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL at Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In

8:00 PM - 10:30 PM

What's left to say about this feature? Don't miss it. Bring the young'uns who've somehow never seen this film and risk cultural deprivation. Extra points if you bring two coconut halves.

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In Presents

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL

An incredibly silly film of great humor, brilliant design and epic insanity. Perhaps the most original comedy - or at least the most ridiculously funny historically semi-accurate comedy spoof - of all time. At the very least, the most quotable movie ever.

PLUS thrilling and funny short films, an intermission, and great company.

Friday September 16th, 8:00pm
Railroad Tracks at Fair Ave, Santa Cruz

BRING lawn chairs, blankets, pillows, friends, wine, & food to share for intermission. Donations are greatly appreciated and directly support the project and the Revolutionary Garden Society who sponsors Guerilla Drive-In.

SANTA CRUZ GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theatre under the stars that springs up unexpectedly in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great movies and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is helping reclaim public space and transforming our urban environment into the joyful playground it should be.
