documentary" "Preventive Warriors"
Documentary, "Preventive Warriors"
The National Security Strategy released by the White House in September of 2002 lays out a plan for preventive warfare in which the US government reserves the right to attack any nation that aspires to what the government perceives to be a potetial military rival or threat. Preventive Warriors is a documentary project that takes an in depth look at this document--its goals, its origins and its potential consequences. Through interviews with intellectuals, academics, and representatives from leading Washington based think tanks, the film expleres the key theoretical and practical underpinnings of a document that encapsulates the current direction of US foreign policy. Touching on the most current debates effecting global security including terrorism, rogue states, and weapons of mass destruction, the film addresses the US response to these international crises in a unipolar world.

Conference on Innovative Approaches
The Fletcher Conference on Innovative Approaches:
Who Speaks? Who Leads? Who Listens?
March 31 - April 1, 2005
Keynote:
Olara A. Otunnu
UN Under-Secretary-General
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict
Registration required
The shape of local society as well as broader international relations rests on who speaks, who leads, and who listens. The prospect of a globalized world was supposed to open the opportunity for all of the world’s voices to be heard – from the fields to the factories, from the domestic domain to the business decision-making table. Yet, some voices emerge louder, while others are clearly unrepresented. The ability to take innovative approaches to today’s international challenges and opportunities depends on working with and possibly changing this dynamic. Who speaks, who leads, and who listens in today’s world? What are the implications of the divide between the voiced and the voiceless for all of us?
The Second Annual Fletcher Conference on Innovative Approaches (FCIA) seeks to challenge current and future global leaders to find the innovation that emerges from the changing shape of power relationships, communication, and the ability to influence others. Within the intersection of international relations theory and practice, we provide a forum to engage participants from various social, economic, political, cultural and regional settings to contribute to the debate. Participating in the FCIA conference gives the participants an opportunity to explore the interwoven nature in each of the various backgrounds, professions, and futures. The Second Annual FCIA Conference will utilize this interdisciplinary approach to examine current and future concerns arising from who speaks, who leads, and who listens in today’s world.

Stop the Draft! Shut Down Military Recruiting!
National Day of Action
Stop the Draft! Shut Down Military Recruiting!
JOBS & SCHOOLS, NOT WAR!
Join with students from Somerville High School and elsewhere to demand No Draft! Troops Out Now! Military Recruiters off our campuses and out of our communities! Money for Education not for War & Occupation.
* Student Walk-outs
* Shut down Recruiting Stations
* Picket Selective Service Offices
* Throw military recruiters off of your campus
On March 31, the Selective Service System (SSS) will report to President Bush that it is ready to implement the draft within 75 days. Right now the SSS is busy staffing local draft boards, training high schools registrars, and searching the Dept. of Education's computer files to ensure maximum compliance. It is clear that the Bush Administration is preparing for a draft. They need thousands of new troops to carry out their dream of global empire. It is time for young people, who are already under attack from the Bush Administration, to take a stand. On March 31, the same day that the Selective Service System is reporting that the draft is ready to go, youth all over the country will report that they will refuse to go. Local No Draft, No Way organizers and other anti-draft activists are planning protests, walkouts, and direct action at recruiting centers, selective service offices, andother sites. We call upon students, youth, and antiwar activists to organize local actions on March 31 to say "No Draft, No Way!"
On March 31, the Selective Service System will report to President Bush that it has met its FY 2004 performance guidelines (see www.nodraftnoway.org/perf2004.pdf).
These guidelines clearly indicate that the Bush Administration is gearing up for a draft--the Selective Service System is staffing local draft boards, training volunteer registrars to work on high school and college campuses, and refining its procedures so that it can
implement a draft within 75 days of authorization.
On that same day, No Draft, No Way has called for nation-wide actions to fight the draft and military recruiting. Organizers all over the country are planning activities.

March 31 - April 1, 2005

Yet, some voices emerge louder, while others are clearly unrepresented. The ability to take innovative approaches to today’s international challenges and opportunities depends on working with and possibly changing this dynamic. Who speaks, who leads, and who listens in today’s world? What are the implications of the divide between the voiced and the voiceless for all of us?
Who are the international experts that purport to understand what countries on the other side of their world need and want?
What are the key factors that influence and hinder women as they take on decision-making roles in countries transitioning to democracy?
Do those who use violence to get to the negotiating table or to inflict terror deserve the attention and the power that they receive? Do they represent the people that they purport to protect?
Is a woman toiling her field prepared to make the sacrifices demanded by environmental lobbies and extracting corporations? What will be the cost to her, her family and the community?
Can financially-driven corporations legitimately play a role in promoting environmentally and socially sound practices in the global market?
Is civil society consultation in constitution-making effective? Are non-elite voices actually integrated into the drafting process?
How do voices change when people are migrating? How do changing communities continue to listen to their members, both physically present and long-gone?
How have people of African Descent engaged in international diplomacy, scholarship, leadership and influencing global decision-making?
Whose vision is being followed? What is being created?

What's New at the MIT Media Lab?
Technologies for the Young and the Restless
Chris Csikszentmihályi, Mitchel Resnick
In this forum, two Media Lab professors discuss their efforts to develop technologies to empower children and those outside traditional power structures.
The session will include examples of projects that are moving out of the lab and into the world.
Chris Csikszentmihly is the Muriel Cooper Assistant Professor of Media Arts and Sciences and directs the Computing Culture Group at the MIT Media Lab. Interested in cultural narratives, his work typically aims to create a new technology to embody a particular social agenda. "Afghan Explorer," for example, was designed to defend the First Amendment by creating a tele-operated robot reporter that bypassed American military censorship. It recently won an International Association of Art Critics award for Best Web Art. His "Natural Language Processor," was commissioned by the KIASMA Museum in Helsinki, Finland.
Mitchel Resnick, associate professor at the MIT Media Laboratory, explores how new technologies can help people learn new things in new ways. Resnick's research group developed the ideas and technologies underlying the LEGO Mindstorms robotics construction kit, used by millions of kids around the world. He co-founded the Computer Clubhouse project, a worldwide network of after-school centers, and is the author of Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams (1994) and co-author of Adventures in Modeling (2001).

Soraida: Woman of Palestine
Soraida: A Woman of Palestine
WOMEN IN FILM & VIDEO/NEW ENGLAND is proud to present the documentary Soraida: A Woman of Palestine, by Tahani Rached.
This is the story of the personal struggle of a woman trying to retain her humanity in the midst of oppression. In her neighbourhood, the women do not all wear veils, the men do not rattle off empty political slogans, and the young people do not have bombs strapped to their belts. Life goes on despite the curfews and checkpoints that confine the people in a barless cage. Through their simple, everyday actions, we discover the worst thing about living under a state of siege: the loss of control over one's own life.
Women in Focus is a monthly program presented by Women in Film & Video/New England. Each program will revolve around a theme, demonstrating the diverse genres and various capacities in which women work with film and video. Please check our website or join our mailing list for updates.

War Tax Resistance Workshop
TIRED OF PAYING FOR THE IRAQ WAR?
Military spending already accounts for a large portion of the U.S. federal budget and is currently on the rise. Many who oppose the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism are asking themselves: what can we do to reduce our complicity in these campaigns?
This workshop serves as a practical introduction to redirecting the military portion of your tax dollars to organizations working to promote social, economic, and environmental justice. We'll also discuss possible consequences of engaging in this kind of nonviolent direct action; bring your questions!

This massive summit of animal researchers includes six member organizations—the American Physiological Society, the Society for Neuroscience, the Microcirculatory Society, the Society of General Physiologists, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology—many of which contribute to the suffering of millions of animals each year in U.S. laboratories. The conference will also host booths by hundreds of vendors of animal research supplies and torture devices.
And we’ll be there! San Diego Animal Advocates is calling on California activists to join us in leafleting and protesting researchers at the convention, and to help educate the public in downtown San Diego and through the local media on the horrors of animal research. Will you be there, too?

WOMEN, ACTION & THE MEDIA: Making Noise, Making Change
WOMEN, ACTION & THE MEDIA: Making Noise, Making Change
Friday, March 31 -- Sunday, April 2
MIT's Stata Center, Cambridge, MA
Have you noticed that progressive women's voices have been
increasingly been shut out of the media (and, as a result, out of much
public policy discussion)? It's time to put women back in the story.
That's why the Center for New Words is hosting the third annual Women,
Action & the Media (WAM!) conference. Our past two conferences have
featured such speakers as Katha Pollitt, Medea Benjamin, Marie Wilson,
Julianne Malveaux, Jill Nelson, Amy Goodman, Daisy Hernandez, Rita
Henley-Jensen, Lisa Jervis, Shelley Lewis, Elaine Lafferty, Noy
Thrupkaew, and many more. This year's conference will bring together
more than 300 participants for over two days of meeting, discussing,
and exchanging our observations, ideas, experiences, opinions, and
tools for change-and to plan together for action.
Read more here: www.centerfornewwords.org/wam2006.html .
SAVE THE DATE! Registration opens in November. Don't miss a thing --
email wam-AT-centerfornewwords.org today to be put on the WAM!2006
announcement list.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
At WAM!2006, we'll develop skills and action plans to amplify
progressive women's public voices-as analysts, opinion-makers,
educated citizens and influences in civil society. But to do that, we
need you. What questions, issues, and concerns do you want to hear
debated? What are the actions we should be taking, and what should we
be preparing for? Our CFP guidelines are attached in a word document,
and are also available at www.centerfornewwords.org/wam2006.html .
Please send us your session proposals! Plus -- let us know you're
working on it! Email us wam-AT-centerfornewwords.org and we'll send you
reminders about upcoming deadlines and other important CFP
information.

MARCH FOR FAIR CONTRACT
EO/UAW 2322 MARCH FOR FAIR CONTRACT
*Fair Wages
*Fair Health Care
*Fair Child Care
*Fair Treatment for Same-Sex Couples
Graduate employees at UMass Amherst have been bargaining for a new contract for
over a year. UMass continues to propose real wage cuts, cuts to health care and
exclusion of currently covered same-sex couples, and drastic increases in child
care costs. If you thought UMass was the state school where working people and
families could get an education and better their lives - think again! A typical
grad family could be paying $5000 more next year for the same child care
services; their health care costs could quadruple over the next three years.
March to beat back the attack!
