Wien, Que(e)r Beisl: Doppelleben - Doppeldiskriminierung?

7:00 PM - 11:30 PM

Incorporating Faith

All day

9am - 11am

A Special Invitation to Business People in Congregations

Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM) is launching an exciting project
geared to expanding job opportunities for homeless parents and other low-income people.

We see this new employment initiative as a vehicle through which business people can live out the principles of their faith, while also helping to show that employers can benefit from utilizing the resources and people in their communities.

We are inviting business people to help us brainstorm strategies to involve
others in the effort and shape it's direction. In this endeavor, CMM is partnering with Transition to Work, a Boston nonprofit with solid experience in supporting employment for low-income people.

We hope you will be able to attend the first brainstorming meeting.

Please RSVP about your interest in this project and whether you will be able to attend on March 2.

If you have questions, please call me at 617-244-3650 on Thursdays or Fridays.

Sincerely,
Cecilia Villero
Social Work Intern

The Mission of Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries is to bring people together across economic, religious, racial, and ethnic boundaries so that, in partnership, we can work more effectively for a just society.

Emergency Rally: Stop Deportation of Obain Attouoman

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Obain, a teacher in the Boston public school system, is facing deportation by the Department of Homeland Security because of a missed immigration hearing in 2001. Obain misread the handwritten date. In spite of the fact that his life would be in danger if he is forced to return to the Ivory Coast the Department of Homeland Security has, so far, refused to reverse the deportation order.

At a rally in early February hundeds of students and supporters came out to demand that Obain be allowed to stay in this country.

Fenway High School is asking the activist community of Boston to come to demonstrate their outrage at the proposed deportation of Obain Attouoman, a teacher at Fenway High School and the Boston Public Schools for 10 years. If we don't stop this injustice this week, Obain may be deported this weekend!

Please forward this to as many activists and activist organizations as you can.

This is an issue of justice and racial justice. Obain is from the Ivory Coast seeking political asylum. Of the 400 individuals incarcerated last year while Obain was being detained on a minor visa problem only 2 were not people of color.

This year, the Immigration Department is also trying to deport refugees from the Montserrat Volcano even though they have nowhere to go if sent back to Montserrat.

For more information about Obain visit the Fenway High School website:

Unconstitutional: The War On Our Civil Liberties

5:30 PM - 10:00 PM

A film portraying how civil liberties have been trampled on by the U.S.A. Patriot Act and Bush administration policies.

The fall of 2001 brought us assaults against Americans' comfort zone on many fronts. We learned that we could fall victim to attacks on US soil and we learned that those guarantees provided to us in the Constitution were equally vulnerable.

Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties, is the third in a series of Public Interest Pictures films that follows Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election and Uncovered: The War on Iraq. True to their legacy, Unconstitutional provides the facts and stories that illuminate administration lies, wrongheaded policies, and the real victims of these actions--the American people.

Here, you'll get the real story behind the USA PATRIOT Act and other administration policies and the gut wrenching stories behind those affected--from law-abiding store clerks to United States Olympians unable to travel.  It'll remind you of what America used to stand for and what it seems we're falling for now. In short, this one-hour film will affirm why you're angry and give you a tool to help others join your ranks.

"We created Unconstitutional to show Americans the extent to which our civil liberties and our freedoms have been trampled upon by our government since 9/11," said Robert Greenwald, the film's executive producer. "The more Americans understand what is at stake, and what has already been lost, the more determined we become to protect our rights." Unconstitutional, which was written, directed and produced by Nonny de la Peña, explores how the Patriot Act has taken away checks on law enforcement and continues to endanger the civil liberties of all Americans. The Patriot Act, which was passed just 45 days after September 11 with virtually no debate, is being met with a significant grassroots groundswell from across the political spectrum. Resolutions opposing the Patriot Act have passed in approximately 340 communities in 41 states, including four statewide resolutions. These communities represent over 53 million people who believe that the Patriot Act goes too far. Unconstitutional is a chilling look at how the Patriot Act went too far, too fast in restricting important liberties while not making us any safer," ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said. "The ACLU is proud to support Greenwald's effort to present a bipartisan view of the problems with the Patriot Act." By focusing on the personal stories of real people, Unconstitutional aims to reveal how paranoia, fear and racial profiling have led to gross infringements on freedom and democracy without strengthening national security. In addition to interviews with Romero, the film features a diverse cross-section of people, including:

Vincent Cannistraro, former director of the CIA's counter-terrorism operations Aquil Abdullah, member of the U.S. rowing team at the 2004 Olympics Anne Turner, Librarian, Santa Cruz Public Library Bob Barr, former Republican Congressman from Georgia Major Michael Mori, U.S. military lawyer appointed to Guantanamo detainee David Hicks

Sam Hamoui, a Seattle resident whose parents and sister were detained by federal agents

De la Peña has four feature length documentaries to her credit, including the critically acclaimed The Jaundiced Eye. She has also contributed investigative reports for BBC's Omnibus & Inside Story, A&E's Investigative Reports and The Discovery Channel, and was part of the team that created HBO's Death on the Job, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Jenny Holzer: Working in Public

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Contemporary Art

The Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Celebrity Lectures

March 2nd and 3rd, 2005

For more than twenty-five years, Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas, arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, from the Venice Biennale, to the Guggenheim in New York and in Bilbao, Spain, as well as the MFA’s West Wing. Whether formulated as a T-shirt, plaque, or LED sign, Holzer’s medium is always language, and the public dimension is integral to the delivery of her work. Starting in the late 1970s with Truisms and Inflammatory Essays—posters plastered to the walls of New York buildings—Holtzer’s LED screens, granite benches, and recently, projections on prominent façades, counter ignorance and violence with humor, kindness, and moral courage. Join Jenny Holzer for a discussion of the nature of public art and working in public spaces.

This annual series, generously funded by the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation, brings the greatest names in the arts to the MFA. Join us from October through April for six exciting lectures with celebrated speakers chosen for their achievements, creativity, and fresh perspectives.

The Lafayette 8, Richard Picariello & The DNC 3

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

"Homeland Security" in Boston

Homeland Security and the Criminalization of Dissent in Boston:
Police Surveillance, Secret Dossiers, and the DNC Cases

An evening of information and discussion concerning "The Lafayette 8," Richard Picariello, and "The DNC 3"

What do "The Lafayette 8," Richard Picariello and "The DNC3" all have in common?

All are activists arrested in or around Boston near or during the time of the Democratic National Convention whose cases are now making their way through the courts. In all three cases, political activists were targeted for arrest under heightened police security and surveillance using a joint local and federal police apparatus created under the pre-text of "fighting terrorism."

In all three cases, police and prosecutors have used this same pretext for refusing to turn over evidence and police intelligence related to the arrests. These cases are part of a pattern under the system of Homeland Security: secret evidence, secret information sharing, secret dossiers on people engaged in all forms of political activity, and the criminalization of protest under the pretext of "fighting terrorism."

Learn more about all three cases and about local police surveillance and repression against activists. Information obtained through FOIA petitions on behalf of Amer Jubran--a Palestinian activist arrested in 2003 and later forced to leave the country--will also be presented. This will include a short film with clips from more than 12 police surveillance tapes of local demonstrations, as well as evidence of coordinated information sharing between local and federal police agencies aimed at creating extensive files on people engaged in political activities protected under the First Amendment.

There will be brief talks by Michael Auffinger of "The Lafayette 8" and representatives of the other defense cases, as well as Richard Hugus of the Amer Jubran Defense Committee, and Kazi Toure.

“A heartbreaking anti-war allegory”

A young American soldier (Joe) in WW I is wounded by a landmine. He looses his arms, legs and eyes as well as his ability to hear, speak or smell. Lying in hospital he is not able to distinguish if he is awake or if he is dreaming. Trying to find out he relives his story in strange dreams and memories. One day Joe finds a way to communicate with the doctors.

Facing Up to Evil in an Age of Genocide and Terror

7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Os Guinness

Unspeakable: Facing Up to Evil in an Age of Genocide and Terror

Author and speaker Os Guinness confronts our inability to understand evil -- let alone respond to it effectively -- by providing both a lexicon and a strategy for finding a way forward. Since 9/11, much public discussion has centered on the destructiveness of extrem-ist religion. Guinness provocatively argues that this is far from an accurate picture and too easy an explanation. In this expansive exploration of both the causes of modern evil and solutions for the future, he faces our tragic recent past and our disturbing present with courageous honesty. In order to live an “examined life,” Guinness writes, we must come to terms with our beliefs regarding evil and ultimately join the fight against it.

He discusses evil as evidenced in human history. How we understand evil is not merely an academic question for philosophers or a matter of personal morality; it is has powerful significance for our national politics and policies. Are violence and warfare inevitable aspects of the human condition? Are individuals who strive for justice and equality facing impossible odds?
