Concerns of Women at Harvard
Coping Well with a Changing Workplace
Dr. Sheila Statlender, formerly with the Office of Student Life, Harvard Law School
Committee on the Concerns of Women at Harvard
RSVP: email ccw-AT-harvard.edu by 1/31/05 with the word "registration" in the subject line
Dips in the economy and changes in leadership can exert ripple effects in
the workplace. Downsizing may lead to a heavier workload for employees and
to anxieties over when the next shoe will fall. Those who "survive" may
experience survivor guilt, increased isolation, or may miss valued
colleagues no longer available to provide guidance and support. Even
positive changes may engender a period of adjustment and uncertainty. These changing dynamics can be hard to resolve, because the topics involved may not be easy to process in an open and straightforward manner.
This workshop will explore strategies available for coping well with
workplace change. Drawing in part on relational-cultural theory developed
at the Stone Center at Wellesley College, we will explore a variety of
tools for assessing and coping with the changes. Participants are
encouraged to bring hypothetical situations they may wish to offer for
discussion, and case examples will be provided. We are aiming for a
lively, interactive session and hope to come away with a greater awareness
of practical strategies for coping with change.
Our speaker, Dr. Sheila Statlender, is a clinical psychologist, career
coach and organizational consultant who served as a Student Life Counselor
in the Office of Student Life at Harvard Law School for nearly 16 years.
Dr. Statlender also served as a member of the CCW Steering Committee for
five years, and was a member of the Boston Bar Association (BBA) Task Force
on Work-Life Balance. Her work with BBA continues with the ongoing
standing committee that evolved from the task force project. Dr.
Statlender is familiar with high stress, high demand environments from the
perspective of students, faculty and employees/professionals alike. She
has been a member of a consultation group at the Stone Center exploring the
relevance of relational-cultural theory to the workplace. She maintains a
private practice in Newton Centre and Harvard Square. On a personal note,
Dr. Statlender is the mother of three children and one member of a
dual-career couple.

Islam, Politics, & Reproductive Health in South Asia
The past and present coexist in the nexus between Islam, politics, and patriarchy in the various nations of South Asia.
This locus remains a potent force in determining what reproductive rights mean to Muslim women in the subcontinent.
Fauzia Ahmed will present a historical framework revealing sources of indigenous feminism and ways in which contemporary voices of grassroots women influence reproductive health issues in South Asia.

Cpt Paul Watson, Greenpeace & Sea Shepherd
Captain Paul Watson is Master and Commander of over 160 Sea Shepherd Voyages enforcing laws to protect the earth's marine wildlife and wilderness habitats. He is a world-renowned expert on the state of the oceans and has addressed International audiences for over 25 years.
excerpts from latest Sea Shepherd newsletter:
Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd:
Our flagship, the Farley Mowat, has arrived in Bermuda to undergo final preparations to return to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in February 2005 to once again focus international attention on the vicious brutality of the annual Canadian seal slaughter. We are also continuing our campaign to oppose the slaughter of dolphins in Japan. We are sending another team to Taiji, Japan, to keep pressure on the Japanese to stop the slaughter of over 23,000 defenseless dolphins during this hunt season (which lasts until March of 2005).
On behalf of the crew and staff of Sea Shepherd, please accept our deepest thanks and best wishes for a happy holiday season.
For your support, we are grateful.

Embedding the Internet
CSAIL Dertouzos Lecture
4:15pm - 5:45pm
Professor Deborah Estrin
Embedding the Internet: How Smart Sensors May Help Save the Planet
Sensor networks are an exciting class of computing systems that combine distributed sensing, computation and wireless communication.
On the technology side these systems are being touted as a technology as disruptive and enabling as the Internet; on the application side they are being driven as a means of monitoring public exposure to contaminants, managing land use, and supporting safer structures.
In this talk I will discuss motivating applications and supporting technology while sharing lessons learned about problem (and solution) definition in this unavoidably multi-disciplinary endeavour.

POPaganda: The Art & Crimes of Ron English
by Pedro Carvajal (2004, 78 min., video)
This rambunctious documentary features the culture-jamming and billboard-liberation antics of Ron English. The modern day Robin Hood of Madison Avenue, Ron paints, perverts, infiltrates, reinvents and satirizes modern culture on canvas, in songs, and directly on hundreds of pirated billboards. Shot entirely guerilla-style, the film chronicles the evolution of an artist who offers an alternative universe where nothing is sacred, everything is subverted and there's always room for a little good-natured fun. Also featuring art by Shepard Fairey, ArtFux, Cicada, and Anthony Ausgang.

Brain wash session one
Brain Wash Session One
Glasgow School of Art
7th - 11th of February
We invite everyone (activists, feminists, ecologists, doctors, conservatives, vegans, carnivors, anarchists ...) to take part in our brain washing session by taking a look at documentaries concerning some key issues such as WASTE, IRAQ, ZAPATISTAS, and the MEDIA. We will have guests to speak about each theme as well as open discussions. We will also have a flyer table (for local activists to take part in) general information about the G8, IMF, WTO, supermarkets, surveillance, a Zapatista mural on exhibition, ZApatista coffee, as well as some of Jess Hurd's photography ...
The aim of this event is to welcome as diverse and extreme points of views as possible to converge in one space. It doesn't matter whether we agree with each other or not, the idea is to communicate and figure where and why we disagree. It will also be an opportunity to see some great films such as Surplus, Manufacturing Consent, Total Rubbish, The Human Cost of War, and Independent Media in a time of War, Zapatista.
Monday 7th - WASTE
Surplus + Total Rubbish
